Travelogue: A View From Outside Nigeria By Jimoh Hamzat
My voyage and decision to take an international tour of more than 5 European countries connecting through the much talked about United Arab Emirate was borne out of my decision to have a first hand description and on-ground feel after years of theoretical state comparison, as well as determine the indices and causes of brain drain in Nigeria. Because I still don't understand why people leave their father land to no man's lands.
The effort, despite self sponsored through my meagre savings and almost a life time "osusu" was not appreciated at the Embassy, there was an unfriendly stress on my willingness to return within the period of my visa like I was some nobody who just wants an opportunity to run out of his dear country.
The quiz at the Embassy is an indication that my brothers' and sisters' abroad are yet to earn trust from the Europeans as I kept being asked that I convince them that I won't exceed my period of stay. You dear not ask me to say I should have said I work and school in Nigeria as I was quick to be reminded that graduates who have come to the embassies with their first class certificates and their intention to just earn further degrees abroad and return home have sometimes abandoned their original intention and join in the struggle for survival, making them illegal immigrants at the end of their study visa.
I was almost going to give up on my defence, when my visa was stamped valid - Chenghen! Passport to 26 European countries with no barrier. My joy knew no bound, but I kept that joy, in the euphoria of the moment, I thought of Africa Union with its 54 countries minus Morocco and how difficult it is to cross from one to the other. Even our regional Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) isn't so free though we purportedly use same passport!
I snapped out of my thought when someone behind me threw herself to the floor and began to weep for being declined a visa. My effort to console her, earned me a scornful look that made me abandon my pacifist duty. Hence, I began the sojourn.
My experience at the MMIA almost caused my anxiety to become a mirage as the hostility and disorderliness of the Immigration officials who seem to ask for one hundred documents at the same time, if you don't have the only "currencic" document they require of you handy. This to me signalled a system that has lost focus and divided against itself.
Before your are even left off the hook, some health officials are almost waiting for you to finish with immigration check and rush to their desk for your Ebola check and where you do not have any Nigeria's (de)valued note to exchange, the frustration you will receive will almost want you to beg someone behind you for a Nigeria currency to give to them, privy of the fact that you will almost miss your flight.
Think that is the end? You are not free dear, as the next set of immigration officers are waiting to scan you for anything, like you were not screened at the Embassy before being granted a visa. While the foreign passengers watch with utmost disgust, you will watch in utter most dismay, the officials scurrying to assist the white guys to your disadvantage because foreign currency may be exchanged for this unenviable attitude of the Nigeria officials. These scenes only prepares you for the mother of man's inhumanity to man. The humiliation you're subjected to at the body screening point is not worthy of writing, as you are almost stripped naked to ensure you are not a hard drug carrier.
At the entrance into the aircraft, things are better, as the airline operators are on the look out to ensure their customers/passengers are not maltreated, for fear of loosing their customers. Surprised what Nigerians do to their own.
I won't give you the details of the ambiance at the Nigeria MMIA, perhaps we were allowed to feel the heat, so that it will make up for the cold awaiting us abroad.
The situation in UAE is distinctively opposite of what my country men melted us. Here, everything is coordinated and cordial, with respective and responsive airport officials on arrival. The security check is almost automatic that I didn't know I was being checked. The ambiance of Dubai airport is too comforting to be referred to as nice.
Little wonder why there is high level of brain drain in Nigeria. We may be losing the writer to the brain drain challenge if care is not taken. Though, I opt to join the struggle for emancipation of change in Nigeria, than migrate to a developed economy, where I am only needed to sustain their development or be used as an implement for the political economy of the developed world.
It's amazing what the Nigeria leaders go abroad to do, only to return to Nigeria and not put in some of these development tendencies abundantly available in making Nigeria a better country.
My brief cursory look of streets around me in Frankfort is not intimidating to the gigantic skyscrapers we have in Nigeria, but alas! I'm yet to hear any sound of a generating set here in Germany. Do we prefer to build structures in Nigeria, than to build infrastructures? Can we ask our minister of power to take a clue from these countries I have visited?
My hotel in Frankfurt has no iota sign of a generating set, so it means no one is preparing for the eventuality of power failure, perhaps it's a once in a blue moon occurrence.
How did Nigeria get so bad you may want to ask? My answers may be inferred from a quick look at the situation in Instanbul in the next 8 hours. If it's the same with Nigeria, then we can ask for "the same of the same" but if it differs, then we MUST seek an intervention CHANGE.

APC Has A Deal With Jega To Manipulate Elections
Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, and the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday engaged in a war of words over the fate of Prof. Attahiru Jega as the chairman of the the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Fayose began the verbal onslaught when he described the claim by the APC of a plot by the Presidency to fire Jega, as a "mere comedy."
The governor, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, advised the opposition party to stop acting as if Nigeria belonged to it.
"President Goodluck Jonathan can sack Jega if he wishes and if he does, heavens will not fall," Fayose boasted, alleging that the APC had, by its actions, shown that it had a pact with the INEC chairman.
"By turning themselves to advocates and defenders of the INEC chairman, the APC and its agents have shown that they have a deal with Jega to manipulate the elections," he added.
The governor however said "that the deal will be frustrated if he (Jega) is asked to leave office."
Fayose, according to the statement reminded the APC that the removal of any appointee of the Federal Government was a prerogative of the President, "which no one can question, provided the laid down rules are followed."
The governor described Jega as partisan, saying, "By his actions and utterances, Jega had already demonstrated his support of the APC.''
He said, "For instance, how can Jega explain the 80 per cent distribution of Permanent Voter Cards in Boko Haram-ravaged Borno and Yobe states while less than 40 per cent was distributed in Lagos as of February 7 that the election was postponed?
"It is on record that Prof. Maurice Iwu was asked to proceed on terminal leave two months to the end of his tenure? Is Jega not a beneficiary of Iwu's removal?
"So, if Iwu was asked to go on terminal leave before the expiration of his tenure for Jega to assume office, what difference does it make if Jega too is asked to proceed on terminal leave before the expiration of his tenure?
"It is the President that can determine whether or not Jega will go on the mandatory three months' terminal leave which should commence on March 8, and if the President decides that the INEC chairman should go on terminal leave, what can the APC loudmouths do?
"They boasted before the postponement of the elections that they would go on street protests, but did they do anything? They made noise when Justice Isa Ayo Salami was removed from office as President of the Court of Appeal, what did their noise amount to?
"Therefore, let me say it categorically that the noise being made by the APC and their agents will amount to nothing because if the President removes Jega today, heavens will not fall."
He also claimed that the warning by the House of Representatives on Tuesday that removing Jega could lead to violence was that of the APC lawmakers.
The governor therefore called on "the APC lawmakers to rather pay attention to the ill-health of their party's presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (retd.), whose whereabouts is now a mystery."
But the APC National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, berated the governor, saying his views were inconsequential since he was not the appointer of Jega.
Mohammed, in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, on Wednesday, asked, "Is Fayose the appointer of Jega? What is his (Fayose's) business there?
"We know why Fayose is so vociferous; it is because he attained the Office of the Governor through army rigging.
"Fayose knows he can't win any free and fair election. This is why he's crying more than the bereaved. He's afraid that the truth has come out. No matter how long it takes, the truth will prevail."
Jonathan had during an interview with Aljazeera, on Monday night, insisted that he had no plan to remove Jega.

Obanikoro Ministerial Screening Causes Rowdy Session In Senate, Lagos Man Remain Uncleared
Add BBN on 2BAFB965
The Senate had a rowdy executive session for about two hours on Wednesday as a result of attempt by Senate President, David Mark, to convince his colleagues to give Musiliu Obanikoro an easy passage, in accordance to the tradition of the upper chamber in the screening of former senators nominated for appointment as ministers.
The Senate had over the years adopted the "take a bow" treatment for nominee ex-senators. Obanikoro was a member of the upper federal legislative chamber between 2003 and 2007 on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy. His name is among the eight new ministerial nominees before the Senate for consideration.
Members of the opposition All Progressives Congress in the Senate had, last week, vowed to oppose the confirmation of Obanikoro.
Our correspondent learnt that Mark, shortly before plenary and in a bid to ensure that the tradition of the Senate was not broken, immediately ordered a closed-door executive session to iron out the differences between Obanikoro and the opposition senators before the ministerial screening.
One of the senators from the South-West geo – political zone, who preferred anonymity, told our correspondent that the executive session was rowdy while it lasted.
He said, "The Senate President pleaded with us to respect the tradition of the senate by allowing Obanikoro and two other former senators, who would be appearing before us for screening to just take a bow and leave.
"We told him such gesture would not be extended to Obanikoro because of the two petitions against him that were forwarded to the Senate leadership, which he must address in a question-and-answer session.
"The insistence of the senate president that he would not preside over a chamber where the tradition that predated him would be destroyed led to a rowdy session which lasted for over one-and-a-half hour."
The senator explained that it took the intervention of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, to resolve the issue.
According to him, Ekweremadu suggested that the screening and confirmation of Obanikoro should be postponed till a further date pending when the opposition would have a change of mind.
Another senator, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party from the North-Central, who also spoke anonymously, confirmed to our correspondent that the screening of Obanikoro had been postponed till next week due to the issues raised against him.
He said, "The opposition senators stuck to their guns that the nominee must address the allegations levelled against him but the Senate President insisted that he would never allow such things to happen.
"We however resolved to suspend the screening of Obanikoro and three others till next week Tuesday, if the opposition senators would not insist that he must be asked some questions. "
The senator further explained that the leadership of the red chamber resolved to take the former Minister of State alongside three others next week.
However, when the Senate resumed plenary, the senate president did not explain the reason for the closed-door session.
"The senate at the executive session discussed issues of national importance," he said.
Meanwhile, four nominees- Messrs Patricia Akwashiki (Nasarawa State); Nicholas Ada (Benue State); Augustine Akobundu (Abia State); and Fidelis Nwankwo (Ebonyi State), answered questions from the senators except Akwashiki, who was a senator.
Ada, a professor of education, while responding to questions, said that lack of qualified teachers was responsible for the production of ill-equipped graduates.
He noted that students from "miracle centres" and those who cheat in examinations, and get higher grades usually constitute a great menace to the society as they would do everything to manipulate the system upon graduation.
He said, "So, what we simply do is to try as much as possible that the teachers training programme for the school system is strengthened because what the teacher fails to do, is an irreparable loss and what he does well gives credence to the entire process.
"I would suggest that we go back to the basics. In the time past, we had Grade Two Teachers Training programme; teachers were trained in specific areas. The totality of the teachers was well groomed and he came out as a very refined person."
On his part, Akobundu, a retired colonel in the army, said the best way to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency was the introduction of the multi-nations military taskforce, made up of soldiers from Benin Republic, Cameroon, Niger, Chad and Nigeria.
"The solution is making sure that we maintain the coalition with our coalition partners to make sure that we rid our nation and their own countries the menace of Boko Haram.
"At the same time, we talk about fighting terrorism through carrot-and-stick. What is going on is the stick. And concurrently, I believe that the Federal Government through the statutory agencies are doing everything to make sure that these Nigerians who have been displaces are given sense of belonging."
The screening of Obanikoro (Lagos); Hauwa Lawan (Jigawa); Kenneth Kobani (Rivers) and Joel Ikenya (Taraba) has been shifted to Tuesday next week.

According to the former Nigerian leader, there will never be a repeat of what happened in the country in 1993 after the Presidential election.

"We have come to express our deep concern over series of dangerous political miscalculation currently going on under Jonathan administration.
"We are afraid that crisis is seriously looming and it is like another June 12 crisis is on the way and it may be very tragic for the country. We want you to as a matter of urgency intervene into the matter before it is too late sir," the group opined.
In his response, the former President allayed their anxieties, saying that the 2015 election will never be like the June 1993 election.
"You need not to worry about anything. There can never be any June 12 annulment again. Buhari is not Abiola, he is a trained and highly intelligent soldier.

Barcelona eased into the Copa del Rey final as an underwhelming showing was enough to beat 10-man Villarreal 3-1 on Wednesday and ensure progression 6-2 on aggregate.
While the hosts had the better of the play following Neymar's opener, Tomas Pina's dismissal for a dismal second half challenge on the Brazilian ended slim hopes of Villarreal
progression.
Neymar's clever lob, following a delightful Lionel Messi pass, quickly cancelled out Villarreal's away goal from the first leg, although
Jonathan Dos Santos' 39th minute strike against his former club ensured the sides went in at the break level on the night.
Pina who had earlier ended Sergio Busquets' outing with a studs up challenge was at it again shortly after the interval as he threw himself into a dangerous challenge with Neymar to rightly earn his marching orders.
Second-half goals from Luis Suarez and Neymar added gloss to the result, as the Catalan giants qualified for a second successive Copa final.
