Sai Mama! Hope Dims On First Female Elected Governor As INEC Cancels Votes, Declare Elections Inconclusive...supplementary poll to hold
The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Saturday’s governorship election in Taraba state inconclusive.
INEC Returning Officer for the election, Professor Muhammad Kariey, said there has to be a supplementary election because the total number of votes rejected and cancelled were more than the total votes with which the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Darius Ishaku, led the runner-up, the All Progressives Congress’ Aisha Al-Hasan.
According to the returning officer the difference between the PDP and the APC is 54,881, while the rejected votes from some troubled areas are over 100, 000 votes.
He said a supplementary election must be held within 30 days.
PDP had scored a total of 317,198 votes to APC’s 262,386.

Reports say the elections in Donga, Wukari and Zing local governments were cancelled following alleged irregularities.
The Taraba governorship election is one of the most keenly contested, and perhaps the most watched by Nigerians because one of the leading candidates is a woman.
Nigerians had expected that the election would yield the first female governor in Nigeria’s history.
But as results of the election from the local government areas trickled into the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, Ms. Al-Hasan, fondly known as Mama Taraba by supporters, at some points overtook her main challenger, Mr. Ishaku.
This triggered nationwide celebration by people who thought Ms. Al-Hasan was on her way to becoming the first female governor.
But after all votes in the election were collated, Ms. Al-Hasan trailed the PDP candidate by over 50,000 votes, but the electoral body declared the election inconclusive.
But after all votes in the election were collated, Ms. Al-Hasan trailed the PDP candidate by over 50,000 votes, but the electoral body declared the election inconclusive.
The Taraba governorship election is the second to be declared inconclusive.
On Sunday, INEC declared a similar election in Imo inconclusive, saying the number of cancelled votes (144,715) in relation to the margin of win (79,529) by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Rochas Okorocha, called for a supplementary election.
Mr. Okorocha was initially thought to have won the election after he garnered 385,671 votes compared to the 306,142 votes scored by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Emeka Ihedioha.
The APC candidate is ahead of Mr. Ihedioha by 79,529 votes, which is by far lower than the 144,715 votes cancelled by INEC as a result of irregularities in some wards.
INEC’s verdict on the Imo election is a repeat of what happened in the April 26, 2011 governorship election in the state.
The commission had at the time declared the poll inconclusive because election did not hold in Ohaji/Egbema, Mbatioli, Ngor-Okpala and Oguta Local Government Areas as well as in Orji Ward in Owerri North Local Government Area.
Before that election was declared inconclusive, results for 24 of the state’s 27 local government areas had been announced, with Mr. Okorocha leading in 12 local government areas with a slim total margin while the then governor, Ikedi Ohakim, also led in 12 local government areas but trailed Mr. Okorocha in the total votes garnered.
A supplementary election was then fixed for May 6, 2011, which Mr. Okorocha, who ran then on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, went on to win.

CDD Calls For Immediate Prosecution Of Electoral Offenders
Add BBN on 2BAFB965
As the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly Elections have been concluded, there have been mixed feelings regarding the elections. While the elections witnessed a low turn-out compared to the March 28 Presidential and National Assembly Elections, the overall organization of the election improved considerably.
The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) an organization that observed the 2015 general elections deployed more than 70 field observers in 21 states of the federation who filed reports to the CDD Analysis Centre based in Abuja.
Reacting to the general conduct of the election, Idayat Hassan, the CDD Director said "on the whole, the electoral processes went well, with broad compliance with electoral regulations. In most areas, electoral officials and materials arrived polling units on time and the voting environment was generally well laid-out with supporting infrastructure." Most CDD election observers reported that security and party agents were present at most polling units without being intrusive. "Their conduct during the exercise was generally evaluated as mature and professional. Voters also maintained orderliness across the country." She added. Despite this, there were serious concerns about voter apathy during the elections.
CDD observed that several factors were responsible for the low voter turn-out. According to the Director of CDD, "the tense electoral environment across the country; pre-election violence; the false assumption that the desired 'change' has been attained with the outcome of the federal elections and will therefore automatically engender solutions to the problems of governance at the state level as some of the factors." She however raised more concern about the conduct of politicians and political parties. "The high level of reported cases of hijacking of election materials and confrontations between politicians and their party supporters led to the disruption of the election process in many areas." She added.
For example, in a recent report titled "Matters arising from the Voting Phase during the Nigeria 2015 Governorship and State House of Assembly Elections" CDD documented many cases of electoral violence perpetrated by the politicians and their supporters. The CDD Director highlighted that fact that the situation in Rivers state was particularly disturbing. "Besides reports of killings, there were also cases of arson, attacks on INEC officials and hijacking of electoral materials." She added.
CDD noted the complicity of security agents in cases of electoral fraud and violence in several states, particularly Rivers state, where active connivance of security agents were recorded in the commission of electoral violence.
According to the CDD Director "There is urgent need for the investigation and prosecution of electoral offenders by the authorities; a further need to ensue the non-partisanship of security agencies policing elections; and an improved management of the conduct of elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission."

May 29, 2015, we believe would signal a new realignment in the relationship between Lagos State and the Federal government, in terms of bringing the federal might to bear on what needs to be done in Lagos State. Particularly, it is pertinent, to consider the amendment of the constitution to accommodate additional local governments, getting special status for Lagos State and getting the federal government to invest in infrastructure development in the state amongst other pressing needs," he wrote on the page.
Jimi Benson noted that following the complete movement of the Federal capital to Abuja on December 12, 1991, Lagos State has been abandoned by the Federal government and the new political realignment should generate the necessary supports to make Lagos State function effectively as the economic hub of Nigeria and allow it develop at par with other metropolitan cities.

I am not running again, I would find other ways of serving -Jimi Agbaje Says GOVernorship Quest Over
Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Unlike the legendary Muhammadu Buhari who ran four times before eventually emerging victorious, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate in Lagos, Jimi Agbaje has declared his intention not to contest again for the position of governor in Lagos after losing twice.
While speaking on ChannelsTV yesterday after his opponent (Akinwunmi Ambode) has been declared the winner, Agbaje made it known that it is obvious that Lagosians have made choice and it will be senseless to resort to violence.
Agbaje lost to All Progressives Congress (APC) Party candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode with a 152,206 vote margin. He however made his next step known saying he will never run again.
"I tried once before, this is the second one. I'm not running again," he said. "If I can't be of service as governor, there are other ways of serving the state. I will find other ways of serving."

Despite Jimi Agbaje Concession, PDP Refuses Lagos Election Result Citing Irregularities
Add BBN on 2BAFB965
The Peoples Democratic Party agent yesterday refused to sign the final result sheet of the Lagos State Governorship election, saying he "cannot accept the results".
This however comes even after the PDP candidate, Jimi Agbaje who polled 659,788 votes had conceded defeat to Akinwunmi Ambode who scored 811,994, representing 52.9 per cent of 1,534029, the total votes cast, to emerge winner.
The PDP agent, Mr. Agoro, condemned the electoral process, saying the exercise was marred by irregularities including use of manual accreditation in Ikate, Ibeju Lekki, Badagry and Mainland Local Government Areas; over-voting in Ward 2 Unit 26 of Ikorodu LGA; and compromised electoral materials.
Mr. Agoro expressed disappointment that all "the evidences" of irregularities were not captured in the Returning Officers' report.
While the officer denied the claim of use of manual accreditation, saying the card readers functioned optimally during the accreditation exercise, and that there was no compromise of electoral materials, he urged Mr. Agoro to write a formal complaint letter for investigation.
Mr. Agoro however demanded the invalidation of Mr. Ambode's victory on the basis of the significance of cancelled votes.
However, the Returning Officer, Prof. Adewole, said because the total cancelled votes of 13,502 was less than the differential votes of 152,206, the complaints of the PDP agent was not enough to invalidate Mr. Ambode's victory.
The agent of the APC, Adetokunbo Afikuyomi, in his reaction said the allegations of the PDP "do not make sense".
