Kofi Annan @KofiAnnan Condemns Boko Haram, Calls for peaceful elections in Nigeria
Former Secretary General of the United Nations and Chairman of the Global
Commission on Elections, Democracy & Security, GCEDS, Kofi Annan, has condemned
the activities of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, noting that their brutal
tactics has no place in the civilized world.
Speaking Tuesday morning, at a round-table discussion with Nigerian Civil Society groups
on electoral integrity, Annan said he is pleased to see that civil societies in Nigeria are taking constructive role in the light of the coming elections.
Annan said that as
Nigeria gears up for its general elections next month, everything must be
done to ensure that the general elections are perceived as free, fair and
peaceful.
“Nigeria’s elections are of strategic importance not only for the country, but for Africa as a whole.
The 2015 elections are
an opportunity to confirm Nigeria's progress in the eyes of the world and in the eyes of its own people.
“Democracy allows
transfers of power to happen peacefully through institutional mechanisms rather
than through violence,” Annah said in his speech at the meeting.
He stated further that
politics is too important to be left only to politicians, noting that
Nigerian leaders must work hard to portray themselves well in the eyes of the
world and that of its people.
“ Nigeria’s success is
Africa’s success. Thus, Nigerians must ensure the success of the elections,” he
said.
