If the news reaching BlackBox Nigeria is anything to go by, then the Lagos State University- LASU, academic community should be preparing for yet another showdown as the university's lecturers are up in arms against the management led by Professor Obafunwa.
In a text made available to BBN, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU-LASU chapter, have condemned the 1095 days in office celebration organized by the University's Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa. The Union duly noted that the celebration is an unacceptable waste of public fund.
"OBAFUNWA's celebration of 1095 days in office is an unacceptable waste of public fund. A celebration of administrative impunity and mediocrity. An alien practice from the decadent society. ASUU-LASU dissociates itself from this anathema to academic culture. The LASU community demands an end to these bad days," the text reads.
This condemnation is coming on the heels of a vote of no confidence passed by the union on the Vice Chancellor at its last congress a few days ago.
Lagos State University which is the only state owned degree awarding institution in Nigeria's economic capital is reputed for staff and students union unrest which has served as a model for academic and non-academic unions in other institutions in the country and beyond.
It is also on record that no Vice Chancellor has ever succeeded in getting two terms in office without one crisis or the other soiling the attempt. Professor Obafunwa resumed office in November 2011 during the infamous school fees increment saga.
