2015 Elections: Internally Displaced Persons Must Vote - @RealSeunKuti
Seun Kuti, son of the Afrobeat Legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has lend his voice to the plight of the Internally Displaced Persons,IDPs, in the coming 2015 general election.
Seun who in recent time has been a rallying point for youth advocacy and demand for the entrenchment of a people's democracy wrote via his twitter handle few days back that how would Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, consider 2015 election without allowing the displaced to vote when they are not dead.
In his typical manner, Seun tweeted," Hw una go do SElection 2015 without allowing d displace 2 vote, INEC, dem never die o, let dem exercise der Right."
Considering the high number of internally displaced persons due to the insurgent activities of the Boko Haram sect across Northern Nigeria, it is presumed that not allowing IDPs to vote would be to disenfranchise a large population in the north.
According to the "Global Overview 2014: people internally displaced by conflict and violence report," by the Internal Displaced Monitoring Centre (IDMC) and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Nigeria's 3.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) is approximately a third of the IDPs in Africa and 10 per cent of IDPs in the world.
