Loyalists of the All Progressives Congress clashed with some members of the Peoples Democratic Party at the Jakande, Lekki area of Lagos State, leaving one dead, while many others were injured.

There were, however, different versions to the cause of the clash which occurred on Saturday.

A resident, Johnson Idowu, told our correspondent that the fight started when some PDP members, who were on a campaign rally, had a low turnout.

He said the group took offence when they were hailed by another group of people who were members of the opposition party.

He said, "The PDP was having a rally on Saturday around Jakande. But they had a low turnout. While they marched around the area, they saw another group cheering them up, which they took for mockery.

"That was how they took offence and attacked the crowd. The fight was very intense and in the end, the PDP group lost a member while some APC members were also injured in the fracas."

However, another resident, Tosin Adeda, explained that the fight started after some people tried to stop members of the APC from destroying billboards and posters belonging to the PDP.

He said there was sporadic shooting as gunfire rent the air, with residents scurrying for safety.

Some motorists, who were caught in the fray, were said to have abandoned their vehicles and fled the area.

He said, "APC were the ones defacing the PDP adverts which infuriated the PDP members. In a matter of minutes, there was mayhem.

"The roads immediately turned into a chaotic scene. The party supporters got injured in the fracas; one died and was carried away. Police came around and pleaded with them. Soldiers also came around much later to enforce law and order."

A motorist, who did not identify himself on a social media platform, Nairaland, said he was among those who abandoned their vehicles and fled while the mayhem lasted.

He said, "I was among those who left their cars on the road and ran for dear life. In fact, I was face-to-face with one of the thugs with AK-47 around the Jakande bus stop. It was not a funny experience. But I thank God for saving my life."

When contacted, the spokesperson for the PDP in Lagos, Gani Taofik, did not respond to a text message sent to his phone and did not pick his calls.

The APC spokesperson for Lagos State, Joe Igbokwe, said clashes between members of the APC and the PDP had to do with the attitude of the PDP in the state.

He said, "We have addressed the matter already and it has something to do with the attitude of the PDP supporters tearing posters and using the police to perpetrate other illegalities. An instance is what is happening at the tollgate, where they have a group of people with police protecting them."

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident, but denied that anybody died.

He said, "There was a skirmish between the supporters of the two parties, and six people were injured. They have made statements to the police. No arrest has been made for now, but efforts are on to apprehend the hoodlums behind the clash. Normalcy has been restored in the area. And we have no record of death."
