The National Youth Service Corps on Monday condemned the murder of a serving corps member in Kwara State, Yetunde Idowu, calling on security agencies to investigate the killing and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The organisation warned that it would no longer "tolerate the abuse, harassment, intimidation and cold-blooded killing of corps members that are deployed to serve their fatherland during service year."
The deceased, from Ogun State, who was a member of the 2014 Batch B set, was serving with the Kwara State Broadcasting Corporation, Radio Kwara, Ilorin, before her death.
Idowu, who lived at Tanke on University Road, Ilorin, had gone to the Kwara State Shopping Mall on Fate Road and did not return home.
Her corpse was found around GRA Ilorin.
The NYSC expressed sympathy for the immediate family and relatives of the deceased corps member.
A statement in Abuja by the Assistant Director (Protocol and Publicity), Mr. Eddy Megwa, on behalf of the NYSC Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Abosede Aderibigbe, said, "It is the corporate responsibility of all Nigerians to ensure that corps members deployed in all parts of the country for the one-year mandatory service are accorded all assistance regarding their security and well-being in any part of the country where they are posted to serve.
"The mysterious death of Idowu currently serving in Ilorin, Kwara State, is unfortunate. The news of her death was received by the NYSC management on Sunday, May 24, 2015. She was last seen on Saturday, May 23, 2015, when she informed her colleagues that she was going to Shoprite on Fate Road in Ilorin for shopping.
"The NYSC handles issues concerning our corps members very seriously, especially when it borders on death. Arising from this therefore, the Director-General, NYSC, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi, sent a high-powered delegation to Ilorin to, among other things, register our pains and displeasure over the death and implore the security agents in the state and traditional rulers to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of the corps member and subsequently bring the culprits to justice.
"Every effort should be made to protect corps members."
The NYSC, which expressed optimism that the unpleasant development would not recur, said having visited the Department of State Service, the Commissioner of Police and the Emir of Ilorin, it was confident that all hands would be on deck to ensure that the culprits of the crime were brought to book.
