Reports reaching BlackBox Nigeria has it that a female student of Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos was this evening shot down by unknown gun men.

The student who BlackBox Nigeria investigations has revealed to be known as Dami is a 400Level student of History and International Studies in the school's Faculty of Arts.

It was further gathered that the girl who survived the gun shot has been transferred to Lagos State Teaching Hospital, LASUTH in Ikeja.

Diverse opinions has however been given as to the motive of the attack. Some students who BBN spoke with disclosed that the young lady was on her way from the bank where whe had supposedly used the ATM before she was attacked at the main gate, so invariably, it might be described as a robbery attack.

Another set of students however posits that the gun attack was simply another cult strike but one wonders why a female student would be so attacked by cultists.

Woman Murders Ex-Husband And Boyfriend, Hides Their Chopped Bodies At Home

A woman, Estibaliz Carranza, is currently serving a life sentence for murdering her ex-husband and lover and carefully chopping their bodies into pieces.

A 36-year-old woman in Austria, Estibaliz Carranza, a dual Spanish-Mexican citizen, has earned the sobriquet of Ice Cream Killer after it was revealed that she murdered her ex-husband, Holger Holz in 2008 and her boyfriend, Manfred Hinterberger in 2001, dismembered them with a chainsaw and took concrete-mixing classes to hide the bodies, and buried them in the basement of her ice cream shop, while using the sound of her ice cream making machine to drown out the sound of the chainsaw.

The Vienna based woman who was arrested after workmen discovered the body where she buried them, killed Holz when he refused to leave after divorce, shooting him as he worked on his computer, cut him up and hid the body parts in flower pots. She then killed Hinterberger as he slept with same gun after a row, and gave him the same treatment.

Estibaliz Carranza who is currently pregnant for another man, has been sentenced to life in prison for the double murders.

The Daily Mail described her this way:
A cold-blooded ice-cream parlour owner dubbed the 'ice lady' for the calculated way in which she killed her ex-husband and lover has revealed how she dismembered them with a chainsaw and took concrete-mixing classes to hide the bodies.

She shot both men in the back of the head at close range, cut up their bodies and froze them in a deep-freeze refrigerator before later interring them in concrete under the cellar of her store.

Now, in an explosive memoir written from her jail cell, she has revealed the grisly details about how she carried out each murder.

Holz became her first victim after he refused to move out of their home, in Vienna, Austria, following their divorce.

She told how she walked up behind him one evening as he worked on his computer, held her Beretta .22-calibre handgun to the back of his head and pulled the trigger.

She then used the noise of her ice-cream making machines to drown out the sound of the chainsaw as she cut him into pieces before hiding some of his body parts in flower pots in her basement.

Two years later, after apparently getting away with murder, Carranza also murdered her new boyfriend, Mr Hinterberger, while he was sleeping after a drunken argument.

Before his killing, however, she took both shooting course and a concrete mixing course in preparation.

Claiming he was drunk and abusive, she said:

He turned his face to the wall and started snoring... I was so angry. I had the gun under the mattress. I took it out, loaded and shot.

In the morning she 'asked him to forgive me for what I had done.
She then proceeded to dispose of the body.

A year later, she fell pregnant by a third boyfriend, and was looking forward to a happy future when workmen stumbled across the remains in the basement, and called the police.

But she fled

Writing in her book, entitled 'My Two Lives, The True Story of the Ice Lady' and co-written with journalist Martina Prewein, she said:

I killed two men, whom I once loved. There is no way of glossing this over, I robbed two mothers of their sons. I believed I had to serve men, no matter how they behaved.

I couldn't say no. I couldn't do it, I couldn't get free of them.
She said she made them into 'monsters and finally they made me a beast'.

A psychiatric report commissioned by the court said that Carranza, now in a unit for the 'mentally abnormal', was dangerous and was like a 'princess... who just wants to be 'rescued' by a man'.

During her trial, Judge Susanne Lehr told a Vienna court her confession and her state of 'considerable psychological damage' were mitigating factors, but her careful planning and her behaviour after the murders counted against her.‎

CDD Calls For Inclusive Voter Education In 2015 Elections

No comments :
CDD Director, Idayat Hassan

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has called on stakeholders to embark on an effective Voter Education before the 2015 General Elections in Nigeria.

The call is coming after CDD made public its briefing note titled “Who is the King-Maker in Nigeria: The Voter or the Godfather” on Monday 17 November 2014.

In a press statement signed by its Director, Idayat Hassan, it argues that since independence, Nigeria’s politics has been reduced to mere contest between individuals, religious or ethnic groups struggling for access and/or control over state resources.

It however, recommends that Nigerian Government should increase the current financial allocation to INEC to allow the Commission conduct effective voter education and that an Electoral Offences Commission should be established to ensure those who commit electoral offences are held accountable.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission should intensify collaboration with organisations like National Orientation Agency (NOA), the Federal Ministry of Information and umbrella bodies such as the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), CSOs and media to increase voter education in Nigeria.

“It should partner with CSOs to develop context specific voter education materials incorporating issues from pre, during, and post elections. INEC should take the lead in the re-orientation of the Nigerian public from voter education to civic education,” CDD wrote in its press statement.

CDD also recommended that political parties must deepen voter education among their members as they are the major beneficiaries during elections.

“Political parties should concentrate on developing issue-based policies in their manifestos and campaign only on issues as a means of attracting votes during elections. They should mobilise their supporters and members to enhance their chances at elections,” it stated.

CDD noted that the National Human Rights Commission needs to embark on voter education by highlighting issues related to electoral justice and electoral offences. It advised NHRC to amplify its electoral impunity campaign by continuously publishing the names of those indicted by Nigerian courts for electoral malpractices in previous elections.

CDD averred that Civil Society Organisations and Professional Bodies should devise conventional and unconventional means of reaching out to voters to exercise their mandates in a way that positively influences the outcome of elections.

“They should concentrate on working with local partners to develop issue- based civic education materials, by including post-election mandate protection as a core component of election cycle projects, prioritise socio, cultural and political contexts in their voter education messaging and deliberately target their voter education exercises at the grassroots level so as to meet the larger and uninformed populace,” it stressed.

CDD conclusively call on Donor Agencies and Development Partners to fund voter education projects that are inclusive, representative of the target population and empowers youths, women, persons with disabilities, local communities and disadvantaged Nigerians and help them to exercise their civic mandates.

“They should empower CSOs at the grassroots level to develop context specific voter education programmes, support the activities of NGOs and CSOs working at the grassroots level to design and implement voter education programme. And ensure that voter education programmes are funded timely to allow for trickle down effects especially at the grassroots level,” it concluded.

A 36-year-old man, Sherif Afolabi who raped and impregnated a 16-year-old virgin is in the dock for procuring abortion for her.

The long arm of the law has caught up 36-year-old Sherif Afolabi, who allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl, got her pregnant and arranged for an abortion for her, as he has been dragged brought before an Apapa Magistrate's Court, to stand trial for his crimes.

The judge, Mrs. O.I. Adelaja, heard that when Afolabi defiled the teenager in December, 2013, at the Ilogbo, Ajangbadi area of Lagos, she was a virgin but in the process, she got pregnant.

It was also learnt that due to threats of physically harming her, the young girl kept mum about the act, but became confused when she noticed that she was pregnant a few months later.

When she told Afolabi about the development, he allegedly arranged with a quack doctor and aborted the pregnancy.

The victim's parents, it was gathered, reported the incident at the Ilemba-Hausa Police Division when the girl became unconscious due to the effect of the drug Afolabi gave her.

The accused was subsequently arrested and arraigned before the court on two counts bordering on rape and abortion.

The charges read:

That you, Sherif Afolabi, on December 2013, at the Ilogbo area of Ajangbadi, in the Apapa Magisterial District, did have unlawful sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old girl (name withheld) and defiled her virginity, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

That you, sometime in 2014, at about 10 am, at the Ilogbo area of Ajangbadi, in the aforementioned magisterial district, did unlawfully procure abortion of an unborn child by terminating the pregnancy of a 16-year-old girl (name withheld), and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 234 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

Afolabi, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail in the sum of N200,000 with a surety in like sum while the case was adjourned till December 1, 2014.

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended two men, Funsho Williams and Adekogbe Olabode, for allegedly impersonating officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects last Wednesday accosted a 62-year-old retiree, Mr. Felix Adesanya, and demanded N60, 000 from him for allegedly contravening a traffic law.

The man, who retired from the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, said he was on his way to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital when he was accosted by the suspects.

He said on getting to Akilo Road in the Ogba area of the state, the suspects, wearing reflective jackets, stopped his Toyota Camry and snatched N30, 000 from him after ransacking his car.

Not done, the suspects allegedly demanded an extra N30, 000 so that he would not forfeit his vehicle as stipulated in the traffic law.

He said, "They said I had committed a traffic offence and forcefully entered the vehicle, introduced themselves as LASTMA officials. They later demanded my wallet, ransacked it and took N30,000 with a threat to take me to their office if I did not cooperate and summed up the money to N60,000.

"In order to meet up with my appointment, I went on my knees begging for mercy, but they said I should take them to the nearest ATM or face the risk of forfeiting my vehicle and paying a N120,000 fine.

"Left between the deep-blue sea and the devil, I followed them obediently. At the ATM, they demanded to know my account balance, but I did not allow them see it, I withdrew N5, 000 and gave it to them, making it N35, 000 in all."

The victim said while in the vehicle, the suspects continued to pester him and when they alighted and flagged down a commercial motorcycle, he raised the alarm.

He said one of the suspects clung to a moving commercial bus in a bid to escape when a team of LASTMA officials in a patrol van intercepted them.

Giving an account of the incident, a LASTMA official, Jonathan Arewa, said around 8.15am, he and his team were able to apprehend the suspects.

He said, "A young man in a white shirt was chased by an angry mob, who caught and handed him over to us. The crowd accused him of robbing a man of N35, 000 in collaboration with another man who was at large as of that time.

"It took the concerted efforts of the police and the LASTMA team to stop the mob from lynching them. The suspects were taken to Area F Command for further investigation."

Reacting to the incident, the LASTMA boss, Mr. Babatunde Edu, condemned the act and maintained that the impostors were not employees of the agency.

He explained that the agency would continue to embark on an aggressive public enlightenment campaign to educate Lagosians on how to identify a genuine LASTMA official and not "fall prey to impostors who are out to enrich themselves under the pretence of working for the state."

Edu explained that LASTMA officials were to be in uniform at all times with visible name tags. He added that no officer must cover his or her name tag with beret, pen or other items, and motorists had the right to ask for an official's identity "as anything short of this is illegal and must be reported to the authority."‎

PoliceMan Shoots Bus Driver For Refusing To Pay N50 Bribe

A commercial bus driver who refused to offer a bribe to a police officer is battling for his life after the officer shot him in anger.

For daring to refuse tipping a police officer attached to the Federal Highway Patrol the paltry sum of N50, a commercial bus driver, Umaru Bayi, is battling for his life at the University Teaching Hospital, Ibadan, after he was allegedly shot in the pelvic by the angry officer and left for dead.

The driver who was coming to Lagos from Jos, the Plateau State capital, according to passengers in the ill-fated vehicle, was accosted by the police patrol team with the number plate on their van NPF 6843, on duty along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway at around 1pm on Monday, November 11 and in the process of cross-checking the particulars of the vehicle, a brief argument ensued when it came to dropping the said bribe.

A witness reported the incident thus:

After stopping the bus, the unidentified policeman reportedly demanded a N50 bribe from the driver, but the driver said he only had N1,000 notes.

The driver had also asked his passengers to assist him with a N50 note to pay the bribe demanded, but none of the passengers had it.

Following the vain search, the driver had offered his N1,000 note to the policeman and asked for 'change'.

But the policeman reacted with anger, asking 'should I be looking for change for you?'
The insolence of the driver was seen as an affront on the 'gallant' officer who then ordered the driver down from the bus. The driver was still arguing when the apparently drunk officer suddenly cocked his gun and allegedly shot the driver in the pelvic area.

When the other officer saw that their colleague had shot the driver, they summoned on him to enter their van and they escaped from the scene, leaving concerned citizens to rush the badly injured driver to the hospital.

According to reports from the hospital where Umaru is currently on admission, he is said to be in a critical condition.

SEE! How Virginity Test Is Done In Ghana

Dipo – Puberty Rites among the Krobos of Eastern Region, Ghana.

This is the first time it was caught on camera because their tradition has always forbidden it but due to modernization, the initiation processes of this unique tradition had to be uncovered.

My research was conducted in Ghana, West Africa among the Krobos, a tribal group in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Puberty Rites called Dipo among the Krobos is a very prominent event which has been carried out for years despite the influences of education, modernization and missionization. The practice is held very strongly by the Krobos and it is ensured that every female in the tribe undergoes the rites. The rites are held every year between the months of April and May. Several girls partake in this event which lasts for a period of four days during which they spend most of their time in the
Dipo house where the rites take place.

During this period, the girls are dressed in a special way to show that they are initiates. They have food restrictions and are only allowed to drink water from a well. They are taught the Klama dance, undergo a ritual bath and the crux of the rite is when the girls are made to sit on a stone which is believed determines virginity. Any girl who is found not to be a virgin at the time of the rites used to be ostracized in the past and was treated as an outcast. Nowadays, a set of purification rituals are performed for such a girl. On the last day of the rites, the girls are dressed up in colourful Kente cloth (a
traditional cloth in Ghana) and adorned with a lot of beads on their neck, arms and waist. A durbar is held during which the girls perform the Klama dance amidst singing and in the presence of onlookers.

In the past, when there was no formal education, the rites served as a form of vocational training period for initiates where they were taught housekeeping and child rearing skills. The girls were therefore initiated into womanhood after which, they were ready to be married.

The rites have undergone a number of changes over the years. It was previously held for girls who had
reached the age of puberty and were of marriageable age but now girls as young as two and four years of age are made to go through the rites. The period for the rites has also lessened. In the past, the girls used to be camped in the Dipo house for a period of a year, then it reduced to some months and then a few weeks and today, a period of four days. Formal education is mostly attributed to this change. Marks used to be made on the back of the hands of the participants. These days, it has been replaced with photography. There have been a lot of discussions about the exposure of the body as the girls are made to wear the very minimum clothing and have their breasts exposed during the rites. There have been calls for the abolishment of the rites as it is seen as a fetish practice which also exposes girl’s nudity to the public. However, the Krobos still hold strongly to this cultural practice which is indigenous to them and is seen as an emblem of the tribe.

The rites attract an increasing number of tourists from within and outside Ghana who travel to the Krobo towns every year to witness the event. The bead industry also thrives during the season of the rites as the girls are made to wear a lot of beads in the last days of the rites. The rites were significant in preventing teenage pregnancy sexual promiscuity until girls were of a
ge and ready to be married. However, with the increasing number of younger participants way below puberty age, it is feared that the Dipo is gradually loosing its significance.

The study therefore looks into a cultural practice that has withstood the test of time even though it is continually undergoing changes. The rites have been modified over the years and are still undergoing changes. Factors that have influenced these changes include education, Christianity, and modernization among others. The Krobos have managed to preserve their culture despite these influences which makes i
t a subject of interest as puberty rites among other tribes in Ghana is virtually non-existent.

Six Most Likely APC Vice-Presidential Candidates

No comments :
Add BBN on 2BAFB965

Few weeks before the All Progressive Congress, APC, holds its presidential primaries, below is a cursory look at five politicians that are most likely to emerge as the vice-presidential candidate of the opposition party:

1. Governor Babatunde Fashola

Arguably, he has the brightest chance among the lot. His greatest undoing would be if a Muslim presidential candidate emerges (which is most likely anyway), but the APC might ignore the warnings from different quarters not to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket and go ahead to draft Fashola into the race because of his popularity across the nation despite the recent denial by one of Buhari spokespersons.

2. Governor Adams Oshiomhole

The comrade governor as he is fondly called, is no doubt a leading candidate to emerge in this race. The former labour leader is well-known across the nation and he is generally seen as a man who is close to the people despite the PR disaster that led to the 'Go and Die' scenario. His boldness and oratorical skills cannot also be ignored. His national appeal will be an asset to whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the John Odigie Oyegun led party.

3. Governor Rotimi Amaechi

Ignore him at your own peril. An emerging political colossus, Amaechi is one politician that has fought so many political battles since he joined active politics and he always comes out victorious. His emergence as the vice-presidential candidate in the APC will no doubt give the PDP top-shots sleepless nights. He is sure to deliver millions of votes for the APC in his home-state just like he did for President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 presidential elections.

4. Governor Rochas Okorocha

Although, he has declared his interest to contest in the APC's presidential primaries, the Imo governor will at best get the vice-presidential ticket as the APC leadership seem to have zoned the presidential ticket to the north. A rallying figure for the APC in the South-East, Okorocha's national connections puts him in good stead if the party decides to look the way of the Igbos for the VP ticket.

5. Dr. Chris Ngige

A former governor and currently a serving senator representing Anambra central in the upper chamber of the national assembly, Dr. Ngige has seen it all in Nigeria politics. His perceived closeness to Tinubu will no doubt give him the edge if the APC leaders decide to zone the ticket to the South-East. Not to mention his loyalty to the party for close to a decade now. He also has a cult-like following in the South-East especially in his home-sate of Anambra.

6. Dr. Kayode Fayemi

A shinning light amongst his peers, the 49-year old former governor of Ekiti state is one of the few decent Nigerians that has graced the Nigeria political scene. Armed with a doctorate in War Studies from the prestigious King's College, University of London, Fayemi represents the generational change that Nigerians have been yearning for in leadership positions. He stands a bright chance of getting the ticket if the APC zones the ticket to the South-West. And unlike Fashola, he is a christian.
