ICC Confirms Receipt Of Petition Against Oba Akiolu By Late Ojukwu's Brother-In-Law

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has confirmed that it has received a petition against the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, as a result of the inciting statement he made against the Igbo people living in Lagos State before the April 11 governorship election.
The international court on Tuesday acknowledged receipt of the petition filed by Dr. Josef Umunnakwe Onoh, brother of Bianca Ojukwu and son of the former Governor of Enugu State, late Chief C.C Onoh.
The Oba had threatened to throw the Igbo people into the lagoon if they failed to vote for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akinwumi Ambode.
Onoh threatened to present Oba Akiolu's inciteful speech before the ICC which he subsequently made real his vow through a petition dated April 21.
Acknowledging receipt of the petition, the ICC Head of Information and Evidence Unit, office of the prosecutor, M.P. Dillon said: "This communication has been duly entered in the communications register of the office.
"We will give consideration to this communication, as appropriate, in accordance with the provisions of the Rome statute of the International Criminal Court."

Onoh petitioned the ICC, saying he believed that Oba Akiolu's threat amounted to a call for violence to be perpetrated against the Igbo people in Lagos in the event that the APC governorship candidate lost the election, which he noted violates Article 20 of the international convention and elimination of all forms of racial discrimination.
"Had the threat been made by any lesser person, we would have dismissed same as ideal threat, but coming from the Oba of Lagos himself, it was a call to arms and an incitement to violence against the Igbo people," Onoh petitioned.

It will be recalled that it was a similar incitement speech by the Zulu king that caused the ongoing xenophobia rampage in South Africa.

The accused persons, who reside at Danmusa Local Government Area, appeared before Magistrate Abdurrahman Umar on a count charge of rape.
The police prosecutor, Insp. Hashimu Musa, told the court that the accused conspired and raped the three minors on April 12.
Musa said that one Tanimu Danmusa reported the case at Danmusa Police Division that the accused committed the offence at about 2p.m.

The prosecutor said that the accused had established a syndicate that specialised in raping underage girls by luring them with monetary gifts.
Musa said that the case was transferred from Danmusa to the State's Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
''During police investigation, the accused confessed that they have been giving some minors N200 for s3x,'' he said.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charge and applied for bail.
The Magistrate said that the court would not grant bail to them as their file had been forwarded to the State's Ministry of Justice for advice.
Umar ordered that the accused to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned till May 25 for continuation.

The accused, a resident of No. 7, Edita St., Alakoro, Ebute-Ero on Lagos Island, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and defilement at a Tinubu Magistrates' Court.
He, however, denied the charges. The Prosecutor, Sgt. Aondohemba Koti, told the court that the painter committed the offence alongside an accomplice, who is now at large, at 8:00 p.m., on April 26 at Oke Arunde St., Lagos Island.
He said the accused had an unlawful carnal knowledge of the 14-year-old student (names withheld) without her consent. According to the prosecutor, the victim was sent by her aunt to collect a crate of empty bottles of soft drinks from the accused.
"While on her way, Kamorudeen, who had connived with his accomplice, lured the complainant into a secluded place where they raped her after they had overpowered her. "Kamorudeen's accomplice covered their victim's mouth with a clothe to prevent her from raising an alarm that could have alerted passers-by about their action," Koti said.
The prosecutor said that the student reported the crime to her aunt immediately after the incident. Koti said that the victim's aunt also reported the incident to the police authorities which led to the arrest of the accused. The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 137 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 137 states that, "Any person who has sexual intercourse with a child is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for life." The Magistrate, Mrs Salama Matepo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to May 20, for mention.

Former Military governor of old Anambra State, Col. Robert Akonobi (rtd), has pleaded with Igbo parents to reduce the bride price of their daughters so that ''our young boys can marry them." ''To me, this topic (bride price) has been dealth with in the past by Ndigbo, who came out with a reduced bride price, to enable our young boys marry our young girls," Akonobi said.
Akonobi also cautioned that men should study their proposed wives closely and longer before engaging into marriage because "once you marry, no one else can put it asunder." He spoke at the industrial city of Nnewi, Anambra State during the traditional wedding ceremony of the daughter of a business mogul, Chief Louis Onwugbenu, Onyinye and her husband, Bosah Chukwuogo, weekend.
Nnewi was agog as dignitaries from all works of life trooped to the residence of Chief Onwugbenu for the memorable event. The dignitaries who were from both the military, political and manufacturing circles, including Col Akonobi, Hon. Clement Nwankwu, former member of the House of Representatives; Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers of Gabros International Limited and Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Limited, Chief Gabriel and Innocent Chukwuma respectively, among others.
The issue of high bride price was discussed extensively on the occasion. Hon. Nwankwu, in his own speech, prayed that Chief Onwugbenu and his wife would live long to enjoy the fruits of their children, especially those who married from outside their areas.

Also, speaking, Mrs. Onwugbenu expressed gratitude that her daughter's hand was given out in marriage and prayed that her in-laws who came all the way from Awka to marry her daughter, would go back home safely. Father of the bride, Onwugbenu, in his own speech, said he had already blessed his daughter and her husband to go and make a good home.
On the bride price controversy in Igbo land, Onwugbenu declared: "We do not charge money as bride price for someone to marry my daughter. To me, what is important is that my daughter should live in peace with her husband. Let her husband's family members accept her as part and parcel of their family."

#XenophobiaSA! MTN Suspends Staff For Sharing Post Against Attacks On Facebook

After 7 years of rendering diligent services to MTN Nigeria as one of its best staff, Mr. Emeka Eze (not real names) has been suspended for his post on social media.
Eze got the shocking news of his suspension (till further notice), when he 'mistakenly' shared a post his friend posted on Facebook which has to do with the Xenophobic attacks on foreigners in South Africa by some group of South Africans which has led to loss of lives and property of Nigerians living in South Africa.
While speaking exclusively with PorscheClassy Media, devastated Eze said, "This is worst period of my life, because I never knew it would get to this. Now I feel like a criminal under surveillance. It was an innocence Facebook post, but the last paragraph was 'Lets boycott MTN and DSTV.
My organization munched it and made it an issue, thereby I was called by chat#panel. I never knew it was going to be as serious as this. They put me on suspension till further notice for a Facebook post.
Although, I was very careless on my part, but I also feel my freedom or privacy is trampled upon," he lamented.
Recall that MTN Nigeria has cautioned against reprisal attacks on multinationals that have links with South Africa owing to the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, saying any such occurrence would result in monumental loss and setback for the Nigerian economy.

Mr. Wale Goodluck, the Corporate Services Executive, MTN Nigeria, who joined other Nigerians in condemning the heinous act, stated the need to douse emotions in Nigeria in other to avoid reprisal attacks on some targeted INVESTMENTS like MTN, Shoprite, MultiChoice in Nigeria, which he said, would have far reaching negatively impact on the Nigerian economy, owing to the companies' huge contribution to the economy of Nigeria.
The MTN's appeal for peace is coming on the heels of threat messages sent out by Nigerian students, to revenge the killing of some Nigerians and the destruction of their property in South Africa in the last two weeks, following the outbreak of xenophobia attacks in that country, where a group of South Africans are protesting the coexistence of foreigners with South Africans for fear of dominating the country.
The protesters launched attacks on foreigners, including Nigerians, resulting in loss of lives and properties. The students, had in a statement, threatened to destroy all South African investments in Nigeria, to avenge the killings in South Africa, and mentioned MTN, Shoprite and MultiChoice as their first targets.

Ghen Ghen! OPC Sacks Fasheun, Appoints New President...but he isn't Gani Adams

Founder of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Dr. Fredrick Fasheun, has been overthrown as president of the organisation by a faction of the group led by Comrade Dare Adesope, who has been announced as the new president of the congress.
At a news conference on Tuesday at the congress' secretariat, Egbe area of Ikotun, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, Adesope said OPC has lost confidence in the leadership of Fasheun who had thrown the organisation into crisis and politics.‎
He said since the formation of OPC, Fasheun had been in charge of the body without keeping to the vision that led to its formation.
With several members of OPC on his side, Adesope said he has been declared the new president of OPC nationwide and that Fasheun ceased to be the president of the group, but just the founder, stressing that the congress was not established "to run monarchical system of government. How can one person be directing its affairs for 20 consecutive years?"
"Fasheun is no more the president of OPC and he was removed because of his reprehensible act and that it is high time the Yoruba leaders joined forces with the new leadership of the congress to move the region forward."
He explained that the time had come for all Oodua descendants to embrace the congress, as the Yoruba leaders should not "judge the OPC with the precedent of the past leader," who was advised, but did not take to the admonition.

Adesope stated that the manner the congress would be managed under the new leadership would be in consonance with the 1999 Constitution and that of the organisation unlike when "we ran autocracy where one person took all the decisions on behalf of the organisation without consulting the National Executive Council."
He denied allegation that the OPC new leadership was sponsored by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to move against Fasheun.
Adesope, however, congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan for the just concluded general elections and for accepting defeat gallantly, saying this demonstrated the spirit of true sportsmanship that should be emulated by all.
"If it is true that some groups in the Niger Delta are saying he should not come home, we advise him to disregard such threat. If he is not comfortable with them, he is welcome in any part of the South West. I can assure him that OPC will provide him adequate security."
Adesope also congratulated the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, appealing to him to ensure that he corrects all the mistakes made by the outgoing administration and that all regions in the country enjoy the dividends of democracy; share all national positions fairly; fight corruption; address unemployment with all seriousness and put an end to electricity problem in the country.

PDP Chairman, Muazu Denies Being 'Bundled' Out Of Governor's Meeting..."there would have been a shoot out"

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
National chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dr. Adamu Mu'azu on Wednesday denied that he was bundled out of a meeting of governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).‎
Reports had emerged that the national chairman was bundled out of a governors forum meeting which held at the Akwa Ibom governors lodge in Asokoro.
Indication emerged that governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are not letting up on their move to sack the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Dr. Adamu Mu'azu over the party's electoral woes at the presidential election.
Mu'azu and governors of the party have been locked in a crisis of confidence since, President Goodluck Jonathan lost to Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in the March 28 presidential election.
The loss had resulted in a clamour for the ouster of Mu'azu and the set up of a caretaker committee.

But the spokesman of the national chairman, Tony Amadi, told Leadership that Mu'azu was bundled out of the meeting.
Amadi, who admitted he (Amadi) was not present at the meeting, noted that if such a scenario played out at the meeting there would have been a shoot out between the security aides of the chairman and the governors.
While he refused to state whether the meeting with the governors was rancour free, Amadi said "he was not bundled out of the meeting. None of that happened. who bundled who out? How can you bundle out a party chairman."
When asked that he was neither at the meeting and might not know whether such a scenario transpired he said "what I know is that he was not bundled out of the meeting."
"If they said he was bundled out of the meeting where was his security details? If they attempt to bundle out the chairman there would have been a shoot out between the security details of Mu'azu and the governors and nobody wants that. Don't forget you are talking about a former governor and a national chairman of a political party."
"What we are doing in the party now is how to restrategise and bounce back."
He further lambasted those calling for Mu'azu to resign, noting that most of them failed to deliver their states at the polls.
"Those calling for him to go how many of them won their states. The issues is that as the party lost they are blaming somebody but they tried to hijack the party in their states and could not deliver as they should."
He added that the national chairman will not resign his position noting that the party under Mu'azu's leadership intends to stop a trend where national party chairmen are remained on a whim.
"This party is not changing national chairman. A bane of this party has been the way it changes it chairmen. In the last six years the party has not had chairmen who served for more than two years."

A party source disclosed that the governors were displeased with the performance of the current leadership of the party under Mu'azu and tinkered with the prospects of having one of them head a caretaker committee if he is removed.
It was gathered that the governors are angling for either a south west governor or a governor from the south south to head the caretaker committee after May 29pending the conduct of fresh elections for NWC positions next year.
It was gathered that the decision to move the position to the southern part of the country was predicated on the likelihood that the party's presidential candidate would emerge from the North in 2019.

Call To Service! Every Prospective Corp Member Must Read This

No comments :

Everybody who takes this seriously does so at his or her own risk...

Quick Tips You Should Learn Before Going For Service
1. Don't be late in getting to camp! The best is to be early so your registration can be stress free.
2. Avoid Camp Food. YES!! Camp food is made by a bunch of unprofessional cooks who just throw the miserly food ingredients given to them to make that crap called food. It's not the faults of these women but the government/NYSC officials. The best foods are made on Sundays.
3. Respect yourself and don't break the rules.
4. DON'T BE AFRAID OF ANYBODY IN CAMP!! YES!  The soldiers can't beat you. Neither the Civil Defence nor Police. They can only drill you, but if you are tired, just squat on the floor and tell them you are tired. SIMPLE! Don't be rude because you can be thrown into the jail (After a camp court trial sha), but you don't have to do the frog jumps, press ups… if you don't want to.
5. Mammy Market is your friend. If you are an Ajebutter like me who is very particular about where and what I eat, you can do what I did. Find a Mammy Market stall you are comfortable with, make friends with the owner and have her prepare you whatever you want to eat. Just inform her in advance. I served in Obubra and had this one Mammy Market woman who really took care of me. I will just tell her that tomorrow, I want X soup with Pounded Yam and Dog meat (just kidding about the Dog meat sha) and she would cook it, bring it and give me my bill which was alarmingly cheap (Max. 3k).
6. Sew your Khakis from home before coming to Camp. This is the only way to enjoy your NYSC uniform as it will be tailor made for you to fit. You will end up looking smarter and sharper than the rest of your fellow corp members.
5. Buy as many BYC white shirts and White Shorts as you can afford. I Bought 14 BYCs, 14 Shorts and 14 pairs of white socks. I advise this because of the following reasons;
a. The NYSC issue Shirts & Shorts are so inferior that they either tear while you are still fitting them on, or they will tear while you are washing them.
b. NYSC camps are filled with thieves. Chances are you will lose those shirts and shorts to thieves after each wash. Sometimes, even the Camp helpers (errand boys) are the ones who will rob you.

6. Get yourself a sling bag. This should be where all your valuables must be inside. Always keep it with you even when you are having a shower or taking a Dump.
7. Don't get caught in this trap: A lot of Corpers come into camp and want to immediately start 'runsing' their posting to the states capital. In the Process, Many girls especially get taken advantage of sexually by all and sundry. Even boys also get financially exploited for this. I was a Platoon leader and know this first hand. None of the following people have the power to influence your postings;
a. The Army
b. Civil Defense
c. Police‎
d. Platoon Leaders

A lot of girls get exploited by these people with the promise of influencing their postings. That's why there is always a festival of tears at the end of each camping season from girls that have been used for nothing.
8. Make friends! Make Friends!! Make Friends!!! Very important. Make friends with both Corp members and NYSC officials as they will come in handy at different points throughout your 1 year season.
9. Enjoy yourself in Camp. It's a 3 week experience that always ends up being too short. This is the last time in many of your lives that you will ever get to have such an experience ever again. I call it the right of passage for every Nigerian graduate from Boys/girls to Young men/women. ENJOY IT. I really missed camp when it ended.
10. Don't take up a position of responsibility if you have poor people skills. NYSC PLATOON LEADERS dey suffer. Dealing with Nigerian Graduates is worse than dealing with market women. They are unruly and uncultured. I speak generally based on the numbers you have to face. Some are just pleasant and lovely, but most are pure arseholes. My assistant once left my platoon hungry because they pissed her off. I swear it's a service that you don't get paid for that comes with a lot of insults. If you do, be ready to give your all including your money.
11. Pack Condoms. I do not need to tell you that all call-up letters carry an aphrodisiac in it that makes the ladies h•rny as hell. Even Married women are not left out. Virtually every chick in camp is fair game to a sharp guy. However, whatever you do, please wear the Proper PPE before entering the work site.
12. Beware of Fire Drill. This is a drill that is done on a random night where a bonfire is lit outside and in the middle of the night, the soldiers sneak into your rooms with the lights out and all of a sudden start a ruckus, screaming FIRE!!! FIREE!!!!! FIREEE!!!!!!!! Banging things, creating pandemonium. Sending your rooms into a panic frenzy! People will start running for the exits at break neck speed. Remember that there is no light so people will run into obstacles, fall and get very injured. In my time, 3 boys ended up in the hospital with really deep cuts from the metal bunk beds. PLEASE! When you hear that scream of Fire!! You will most likely jump and be ready to run like other will most definitely be doing! Please regain your composure early and remember that I told you about this drill. Just lay quietly on your bunk and wait for the chaos to subside before leaving the room. Don't even fret should you see a soldier banging on your bunk or any such thing.
13. ENDURANCE TREK: I personally enjoyed this part of camp. I completed mine. Even had to cross a river by canoe at some point. Now listen. Your NYSC issued jungle boots are useless cheap piece of trash that is no good for nothing but the dust bin. For your endurance trek, please find a pair of really good quality trainers, (I bought a pair of military spec jungle boot from the U.K you can also find some in the market that is military spec and not Converses o!!) and wear. If you must use the NYSC issue, make sure it's a comfortable fit. Otherwise, wear the thickest pair of socks you can find. Otherwise, you will be bleeding and injured all over your feet by the time you are done.
14. Corpers with unique medical and other needs. E.g. Asthma. Please bring with you enough inhalers to last you for a month. Remember that the activities in camp are stressful and may trigger your attacks more than usual. Please protect yourself well. And to those with other medical needs, please bring your medications with you o!! Camp clinic is just French for Mortuary. Girl bring in your sanitary towels, paracetamols, etc.
15. If you own a Blackberry, IPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Nokia Lumia, etc.. Please my honest advice is to leave it at home. Chances are you will be too busy to even remember those phones. HOWEVER!! Should you choose to bring them with you, go and buy these back-up mobile chargers so you can charge these phones while you sleep. In the day time, you send those battery chargers to the guys to charge for you. That way, your phones and batteries never leave your sight!
NYSC is gonna be one of the best times of your life, so enjoy it!

A meeting of media experts and institutional stakeholders will take place in Abuja on Thursday April 30, 2015 to deliberate on the safety of journalists and emerging issues in conflict in Nigeria.
The participants will include the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Radio and Television Theatre Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) the Nigeria Guild of Editors (NGE), the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
Also to attend are Editors and Reporters including those reporting in conflict prone areas, representatives of the Nigerian Press Council, spokespersons of the Police and Army, academic scholars and UNESCO officials.

The meeting is taking place as part of a project on Baseline Audit on State of Safety of Journalists supported by IPDC and the UNESCO Regional office in Nigeria.
The objective is to conduct an assessment that provides baseline information on safety of journalists in Nigeria especially in the context of UNESCO's Journalists' Safety Indicator at the National Level so as to facilitate an intervention plan by UNESCO, its partners and other interested stakeholders.
Three front presentations will be made at the meeting including Media Handling of Gender Issues in Contemporary Nigerian Conflicts by Dr. Ifeoma Dunu, Department of Mass Communication, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Professionalism and ethics in reporting conflicts: perspectives on dealing with the new challenges by Dr Sola Ishola of the Department of Peace & Conflict Studies, University of Ibadan and Religious conflicts and media responsibility: the emergent challenge of Boko Haram by Dr Abubakar Mu'azu, Department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri.
The meeting will also deliberate on the desktop research on the frameworks on safety of journalists, the survey among journalists and editors on the safety of journalists in Nigeria as well as the outcome of the monitoring of attacks on journalists, which commenced in November, 2014.

In the latest report released by IPC, it was observed that incidents of attacks on journalists increased in March 2015 during which the presidential elections took place.
The organization said policemen and soldiers were responsible for eight of the thirteen attacks, political thugs, four and hoodlums, one.
"The harassment of journalists in the course of their legitimate duties as evidenced by the outcome of monitoring clearly shows that press freedom remains under threat in the country despite the efforts that have been made to widen the scope of freedom of expression and uphold the right of the public to know the truth since the return of civil rule", the report said
The report also expressed concern that the perpetrators of the attacks were never brought to justice.

Lagos Assembly Speakership: APC and the contradiction in Zoning Arrangement

Bashir Mojeed-Sanni

Lagos is unarguably the commercial and economic nerve centre of Nigeria, such that  anything and everything about and concerning her not only deserve attention, it indeed requires an objective, fair, historical, balanced and honest analysis.
Sequel to the successful completion of the 2015 election, specifically, the gubernatorial election in Lagos and the subsequent victory of APC and its gubernatorial candidate Akinwunmi Ambode and 32 state assembly aspirants, attention as expected has shifted to the composition of the government of the state, from the executive down to the legislative arms, come May 29 2015. As a result, a lot of political and public governance analysts and commentators have been making loads of postulations, permutations, sometimes conjectures, and analysis. Most of which either lacks objectivity, fairness or negates the history of political governance in Lagos, unbalance and lack honesty.
Critical among these analysis, conjectures or should I say rumour, is the issue of zoning of the head of the legislative arm of the state. This rumours are not to be seen as an act of misleading Lagosians but a trend in choosing our leaders. History will only be kind to us if the indigenous background and divisional administrative areas of Lagos is not neglected in determining who emerge as the next speaker of Lagos State hallow chamber. In the light of recent argument and counter argument of the history, composition, nature and the making of Lagos and its people (Lagos is 'no man's land' versus Lagos is an indigenous state arguments), it would be a great disservice to ignore the indigenous nature and people of Lagos in the zoning or distribution of political positions in the state.
A brief cursory and somewhat sentimental peep into the historical formation of Lagos state after her creation in 1967 under Mobolaji Johnson as the military administrator would suffice here. Lagos state was divided into five administrative, but more importantly, indigenous divisions of Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe, which was tagged IBILE and which forms the core indigenous locality in the state. Twelve years later Lagos state was divided into three senatorial district of Lagos West, Lagos East and Lagos Central, without nullifying the initial administrative division. By mathematical calculation, todays' Lagos East senatorial district comprises of two and half part of the old indigenous divisions of Lagos and its people. That is, the indigenous people of Ikorodu, Epe and some part of Ikeja (Somolu, Mende, Onigbongbo, Agboyi Ketu and Kosofe). On the other hand, Lagos West and Lagos Central senatorial district as they were today comprises just about one and half part of the old indigenous divisions. Lagos West senatorial district being Badagry and some part of Ikeja indigenous divisions, while Lagos Central senatorial district is also made up of one and half part of the IBILE divisions (Lagos Island and some part of Ikeja).
Ikorodu as part of the IBILE administrative divisions in Lagos state has experienced the social exclusion syndrome since the return of democracy in Nigeria in 1999. Social exclusion is seen as the process in which individuals or entire communities of people are systematically blocked from (or denied full access to) various rights, opportunities and resources that are normally available to members of a different group, and which are fundamental to social integration within that particular group. The issue of zoning through senatorial district is just one of the medium Ikorodu division and its people has been denied different political positions. This apparent marginalization of the good people of Ikorodu has not only turned them to second class indigenous people of Lagos, it has indeed impacted negatively on the division. It has led to the snail speed of social and infrastructural development of the division and its people, if any at all.
In 1999, the Governorship position in the state was zoned to Lagos West where Senator Bola Amhed Tinubu, having previously represented them in the senate in the aborted third republic, got the ticket under Ikeja Division. The position of speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly  was zoned to Lagos East which produced now distinguished Senator Olorunnibe Mamowora as the speaker representing Kosofe (Ikeja division), the then Deputy Governor Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele comes from Lagos Island (Lagos Island Division) neglecting Ikorodu as an administrative division.
In 2003, we have a formation of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Governor (Ikeja Division), Femi Pedro as Deputy Governor representing Lagos Island (Lagos Island division) and Honourable Joko Pelumi (Epe division) as the speaker of the state assembly, while adding salt to injury, the senatorial seat of Lagos East was occupied by senator Olorunnibe Mamowora of Kosofe local government (Ikeja Division), further relegating Ikorodu as a division in that democratic dispensation. In 2007, Lagos state Governor democratic seat was occupied by Barrister Babatunde Raji Fashola from Surulere (part of old Lagos Island division), Mrs Adebisi Serah Sosan as Deputy Governor hails from old Badagry Division and the speakership position was occupied by Hon Sabitu Ikuforiji (Epe division), while the senatorial seat of Lagos East was zoned to Epe division, again, ignoring the existence of Ikorodu division. Rather unfortunately the same trend of zoning of 2007 resurface in 2011, save that this time around, in a dramatic fashion, the Speakership which was hitherto zoned to Lagos East senatorial district was, though given to an indigene of the senatorial district, occupied by the erstwhile speaker Hon. Ikuforiji who was then representing Ikeja Constituency 1 in the 7th Assembly, which invariable means Lagos West senatorial district. And resulting in the zoning of the senatorial seat of Lagos East to Epe division and the speakership seat back to Ikeja division, without having any recourse to recognise Ikorodu Division and its people in elective position at the top notch in Lagos State.
Here we are again 2015, where we have the Governor-elect Mr Akinwunmi Ambode (Epe division), Dr Adebule Idiat as Deputy Governor (Badagry Division), and the senatorial seat of Lagos east occupied by an indigene of Epe division – Senator Bareehu Ashafa. There are some salient questions we need to consider in determining the next presiding officer of the Lagos legislative arm.
"Will Ikorodu Division and its people be Marginalized Again in This Democratic Dispensation"?
"Will The Leadership Of APC Adopt The Part Of Credibility Over Partisan Politics Or Vice Versa to Determine The Next Speaker Of Lagos State"? We can keep asking question but we all know where the answer lies.
It beggars belief that the highest political position Ikorodu Division as part of the formidable indigenous IBILE has attained since 1999 is a decamping single term senator (Senator Ogunlewe) and a compensatory, irrelevant, figure-head, crisis- settling appointment of less than two months Deputy Governor of the state. The usual mantra is 'Ikorodu did not have a capable hand'. This mantra does not only belittle the contribution of Ikorodu people to the overall development of the state, it indeed defies logic that a division with many first and landmark achievers (the Bensons, Awojobi, Onafowokan, Allinson, AOK Noah, Ajetunmobi, Gbadamosi, Comrade Ayodele Elesho, Ruben Olorunfunmi Bashorun, Davies Sunmonu, Olowoshago, Sanni-Mudashiru, Ola Animashaun, Alogba, Anibaba, Abike Dabiri, Adeniran Ogunsanya and many more) have not been considered good enough to occupy any of the topmost political positions in Lagos State.
To now think that at this time when Ikorodu Division has not only a ranking legislator, but a competent, vibrant and articulate and a refined barrister by training in person of Hon. Sanai Oyeniran Bolanle Agunbiade who is more than capable of occupying the position of Speaker of the 8th Legislative Assembly of Lagos State, the contradictions in the zoning arrangement of political positions in Lagos is been allowed to rear its ugly head. The insinuation that the speakership be zoned to Lagos Island Senatorial District without due and fair consideration to the IBILE dichotomy of Lagos is not only unfair to the people of Ikorodu Division, it also negates the principle of equitable distribution of power and resources amongst major stakeholders in the state and reinforce the social exclusion syndrome.
On this note, the true people of Lagos who believe in the egalitarian theory of equality (believing in or based on the principle that all people are equal and deserve equal rights and opportunities) should not just allow partisan politics to over-shadow credibility, it is a glaring fact that Hon S.O.B Agunbiade of Ikorodu Constituency 1 is capable of steering the leadership of Lagos State House of Assembly. There is need to appreciate our root and togetherness as a great and indivisible state, we need to understand that Lagos State as the commercial hub of Nigeria and Lagos state Legislative arm as a model to other states in the nation would only surpass her present status when we allow merit and competence override the process of selecting who take charge of our affair as well considering the marginalized Ikorodu division. I believe Ikorodu is in the best position to occupy the speakership seat having proven beyond reasonable doubt about how we have been marginalized and our presentation of a Seasoned Intellect, a Legal Luminary, a Grassroot Mobilizer, Parliamentarian per Excellence and a man of the people Hon. S.O.B Agunbiade. It is not a coincidence that Ikorodu Division returned the third highest winning vote margin between the APC and PDP in the last gubernatorial election considering the LGA areas where their elected legislators are been touted for the speakership (16802 compared to 21600 from Mushin and 18121 from Lagos Island); and Fifth highest margin of winning votes across the state. It is a testament of the resolve of the people of Ikorodu to politically align with the progressive even in the face of temptation of one of its own contesting on the platform of the regressive PDP, and their believe in equitable compensation in the distribution of political offices by the APC hierarchy in return for dedication to the party.

It is pertinent that APC as a party seriously considers the use of the IBILE in their zoning arrangement if at all it is necessary to zone political offices in the true spirit of equity, fairness and justice.
Eko o ni baje o! Ikorodu o ni daaru o!! Ki ise Oluwa ma te'siwaju!!!

The lingering crisis of the Adamawa State House of Assembly has deepened as nine out of  25 members of the legislature sat on Tuesday in the conference Hall of Government House,Yola, to remove the Speaker of the Assembly, Alhaji Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and his Deputy Barrister Kwamoti Laori out of office.‎
The ouster came after a parallel sitting at the House of the Assembly complex in Yola, presided by Fintiri , where 10 members including the Speaker also sat .
At the plenary session the Speaker said six members of the Assembly were absent with the leave of the House, while he said others were absent without permission and the house was yet to be abreast of the reasons for their absence.
The house has since adjourned its sitting to Wednesday 29 April ,2015.
However, before then, 11 aggrieved lawmakers had issued a press statement accusing Fintiri of high-handedness and unilateral closure of the house which lasted for weeks and issued a warning to the effect that by that action they have no alternative other than to convene the sitting elsewhere.
Prior to the just-concluded March/ April general election in the country, the house of assembly had gone on a three-week recess to allow members participate in the electoral process.
But a day to the opening of the house after the recess has elapsed, 11 members allegedly loyal the governor Nggilari issued a press statement expressing their grievances with the leadership style of the speaker and threatened to effect a leadership change in the house.

Commercial motorcycle operators, popularly called Okada drivers, yesterday, razed students' quarters, Zion hostel, behind NITEL office in Gwagwalada area council following a disagreement between the students and an operator.‎
According to LEADERSHIP, an eye witness, Innocent Oguejiofor, a final year student of the University of Abuja (Unibuja), said a student staying in the hostel had a minor disagreement with an okada operator over change, saying the bike man went back and called his friend to set their hostel on fire.
He said: "An okada man brought back one of our hostel inmate from the junction and he gave the operator N1000, only for him to say he didn't have change. So, after a minor standoff between our friend and the operator he borrowed N100 to pay the man.
"He left and came back later with other bike operators to attack us; the police came and arrested some of our friends and the bike men. When they left another set of bike men came and started destroying rooms in the hostel and set them ablaze."
Oguejifor said the operators fled when the students rushed to inform army men stationed at the checkpoint, close to the junction, of the attack.

Another eyewitness, who didn't want her name in print, said she was very lucky to have removed her belongings before they razed the house.

#XenophobiaSA! FG Suspends Ministry Perm Sec Over Envoy Recall Controversy

The Federal Government has suspended the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb Danjuma Sheni, for allegedly recalling Nigeria's Charge D'Affairs in South Africa in the wake of the xenophobic attacks in the former apartheid enclave.
A top government official told journalists in Aso Rock on Tuesday that Sheni was suspended for embarrassing President Goodluck Jonathan for inviting the envoy without receiving the President's approval.
The official said the Head of Service of the Federation, Danladi Kifasi, acting on the order of Jonathan, had already queried Sheni and asked him to reply within 24 hours.
"There will still be further consequence," the official, who asked not to be named, said.
He said the President was miffed that the ministry embarrassed him again, a few weeks after the diplomatic row between Nigeria and Morocco over whether or not Jonathan had a telephone talk with King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
He said, "The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been suspended and queried for embarrassing the President by not receiving approval from him before inviting the Charge D'Affairs.
"The President on Monday directed the Head of Service to query him and he has 24hours to respond to the query. You will recall that that was the second embarrassment with this one coming shortly after the Morocco saga.
"The permanent secretary was to be dismissed immediately but for the civil service rule. Even at that, there will still be further consequence.
"His offence is that he invited the Charge D'Affairs without clearing from the President. The truth is that in this age and time, the ministry can make clarification from the Charge D'Affairs without necessarily inviting him. There is what is called diplomatic dispatches. They can also speak with the envoy on the telephone.
"As of now, a new permanent secretary has been redeployed to the ministry to replace him."

Media reports over the weekend had indicated that Nigeria had recalled its envoys from South Africa to protest the xenophobic attacks on foreigners by South Africans.
The South African authorities had frowned on the reported action, which was described as unnecessary.

However, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, had, in an interview with State House correspondents on Monday, said there was no truth in the report that Nigerian envoys in South Africa had been recalled.
Abati had explained that the country's Charge D'Affairs was merely invited home for consultation.

Yakubu's statement read in part, "The Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Mallam Isa Yuguda, has approved the disengagement of all Special Advisers (with the exception of the Special Adviser, Due Process).
"Also, all Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants and Personal Assistants (with the exception of those who work directly under His Excellency the Executive Governor or the Deputy Governor)."

AIT: PDP Mocks Buhari..."we thought he was a converted democrat"

No comments :

The National leadership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, took a swipe at President-elect, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), describing his banning of African Independent Television, AIT, from covering his activities, as unacceptable and totalitarian.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, PDP noted that as a converted democrat, Buhari should make himself amenable to the basic principles of democracy by following due process and seeking redress in court, if not comfortable with any action taken against him.
This came as All Progressives Congress, APC, overruled the President-elect, saying all accredited media organizations, including AIT, are free to cover his activities.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, APC said the incoming Buhari administration will not discriminate against any media organization.
It, however, enjoined all media organizations to observe the highest level of professional standards in carrying out their duties.
The statement said: "There is a code of ethics guiding the practice of journalism in Nigeria, and this demands that journalists ensure strict adherence to the highest levels of ethics and professionalism in carrying out their duties.
"There must be repercussions within the realms of the law, for media organizations that have wantonly breached the Code of Ethics of journalism and turned themselves to partisans instead of professionals."

PDP's reaction
PDP said APC and the President-elect may have one or two lessons to pick from President Goodluck Jonathan, who though was the most maligned and abused President in the history of the country, even by APC, allowed his actions to be sufficiently guided by humility, tolerance and the rule of law.
Metuh, in the statement said: "After carefully studying the defence posited by General Buhari's campaign spokesperson and the smokescreen statement by APC to cover and mitigate his anti-media posture, PDP and indeed all lovers of democracy are persuaded that the action was not only unjustifiable, but also unconstitutional and completely against the spirit of liberty and the rule of law in a democracy.
"We ask, is this a beginning of the feared erosion of the freedom and personal liberty the media and Nigerian citizens have been enjoying in the last 16 years under PDP led-administration?
"Perhaps, we need to remind General Buhari that part of the challenge of his new position, even as President-elect is that he has lost his private life which is now subject to public scrutiny and media interrogation, as required of the custodian of the mandate of the Nigerian people.
"We had thought that having declared to be a converted democrat, he would make himself amenable to the basic principles of democracy by following due process of the law on any circumstance."

Students of Lagos State University under the aegis of Lagos State University Students Union(LASUSU) has condemned the ongoing recess ordered by the school management saying it is against the wishes of the students and that the students are tired of sitting at home idle.
In a communique obtained by BlackBox Nigeria, the students expressed sadness over the continued delay and called on the Lagos State Government and the school management to reopen the school within the next 48 hours or be ready to face them.
The statement which was signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Union, Adebanjo Fatai described as "reckless and irrational" the decision of the management not to reopen the school.
Read full statement below...
With a saddened and bleeding heart, the Students' Union of Lasu wholeheartedly condemns the online bulletin released by the University Management that the "declared recess is still very much in force"
The Students' Union of LASU respectfully assert that the online bulletin released by LASU Management shows how irrational and reckless the Management is towards the Reopening of LASU.
The love of LASUites is never in the heart of the Management as we can deduce that the management and the State Govt is not ready to reopen the school as they are not forthcoming with regards to the issue of resumption.
In this light, the Students Union condemns and rejects in totality the online bulletin released by LASU Management that " the recess is very much in force" as most of our mates in other universities across the country are already graduating while we are still swimming in the pool of recess.
Flowing from the aforesaid, the Students' Union of LASU therefore give a 48hours Ultimatum to the Lagos State Govt and the University Management to reopen the University for academic activities to return back to the State owned University.

Signed
Adebanjo Fatai A (D Erudite)

The ill-luck struck on Thursday, April 23, when the Oseni couple discovered the corpses of two of their children, David Oseni, 6, and Shedrack, 4, inside their deep-freezer, purportedly used for their 'iced block' business.
According to reports, the children were found frozen, definitely had been there for some time. All efforts to revive them proved abortive, as they were confirmed dead from hypothermia.
The Osenis, who are natives of Etsako, Edo State, have been living in Owa Alero, the ancestral home of the mother are yet grieving off such a huge loss.

A sixteen-year-old teenager, Azeez Ganiyu has reportedly raped a 2-year-old toddler in Ijora Badia area of Lagos.
Azeez we gathered abducted Precious (Not real name) from her residence on Giwa Street located in Ijora Badia, Lagos State on April 16 at about 10am. The sad incident happened after the victims mother left her in a room with a neighbour to buy food at a nearby shop.

Reports gathered says 16-year-old Ganiyu abducted the girl when she walked outside to play with other children.
He reportedly took her to an uncompleted building, said to be a few kilometers away from the victim parents' house, and raped her.
It was learnt that Precious' mother and neighbours were thrown into confusion when they did not see the girl in the surroundings.
After minutes of fruitless search, it was learnt that the mother suddenly heard a baby screaming and traced the voice to the uncompleted building, where she allegedly met Ganiyu committing the crime.
Precious was said to have been taken to a hospital where it was medically confirmed that she had been raped.
It was learnt that the suspect, who also resides in the community, was later arrested by the police at the Ijora Badia Police Division.
The police subsequently arraigned Ganiyu before an Apapa Magistrate's Court on one count of rape.
The charge read, "That you, Azeez Abdulganiyu (16), on April 16, 2015, at about 10am on Giwa Street, Ijora Badia, Lagos in the Apapa Magisterial District, did unlawfully have carnal knowledge of a two-year-old girl."

The police prosecutor, Inspector Olusoji Ojaokomo, told the court that the offence contravened provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty before the presiding magistrate, Mr. P.A. Adekomaya.
The magistrate thus ordered that the defendant's case file be transferred to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
Adekomaya thereafter granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The magistrate ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of tax payment to the court.
The case was adjourned till May 5, 2015.

How Seven Dogs Almost Killed Bus Driver In Lagos...

No comments :

A 45-year-old commercial driver, Saturday Akpomose, narrowly escaped death last Saturday, after he was attacked by seven dogs at Ajah area of Lagos State. The timely intervention of residents and passers-by saved the driver from the dogs.
Akpomose, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, had gone to the area with his wife to visit his in-law, Mr. Christian Peter, when the dogs pounced on him.
Vanguard gathered that the dogs, owned by a Navy Captain, were being taken out to ease themselves at a nearby uncompleted building, when they saw Akpomose and pounced on him.
The matter was reported at Ogombo Police Division, which referred Akpomose to the General Hospital at Akodo, for immediate treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

His story
When the victim was visited in the hospital, he said: "My wife and I went to visit my in-law on Sunday. He lives at Okun Ajah Road, in Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area. Later, on Tuesday morning, I just strolled out of the compound and came across the dogs.
"As I stepped out, I saw a security man coming out with several dogs. They were very huge Alsatian dogs. I was terrified when I saw them and as I tried to go back in, they overpowered the man holding them.
"As I bent down to pick a stone and scare them away, they pounced on me and that was all I knew. They bit me in almost all parts of my body. As I screamed, some residents came out and tried to scare away the dogs with sticks.
"My screams even woke up my in-law who was asleep in the house. At a time, I became weak and unconscious and it was the people who rushed me to the hospital."

Dogs' owner intervenes
A visit to the residence of the dogs' owner also revealed this. The Chief Security Officer attached to the building, who identified himself simply as Victor, said: "Immediately I got back home, I explained his condition to my boss who directed me to see his family and take a decision on how to transfer the victim to his own private hospital for proper medical attention.
"We have bought all the drugs they asked us to buy. We are showing the receipt to you just to let you know that we care about the victim."
