Let's Discuss How to End Child Marriage on Twitter Tomorrow #IDAC2015

1 comment :

Good evening.

As we prepare to commemorate the 2015 International Day of the African Child tomorrow, which also doubles as the day for the celebration of the 25th Year Anniversary of the Adoption of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, with the view of reinforcing State Parties commitment to children's rights, examining the main achievements and challenges in the implementation of the charter, and identifying the way forward, join us for a tweet session as we discuss on how to Accelerate our Collective Efforts to End Child Marriage in Africa.

While celebrating the 25 Years Anniversary of the Charter, with its improvement on the lives of children, to one degree or another, also worthy of note is that there are still gaps that need to be filled to ensure the well-being of children in Africa. In particular, Child Marriage remains a reality for millions of children–predominantly girls–across Africa. Reports show that thirty-nine percent of girls in sub-Saharan Africa are married before their 18th birthday; thirteen percent are married by their 15th birthday. It is also obnoxious to learn that 15 out of the 20 countries with the highest rates of child marriage are in Africa.

It is in consideration of this fact and in an effort to provide a bright future for millions of girls that the ACERWC made ending child marriage topic of first concern, hence the need to educate the general public.

Join us on Twitter tomorrow, June 16 from 10am 1:00pm as we discuss the need to End Child Marriage. To join the conversation, tweet using the hashtag #IDAC2015 and
@child_fount. For further information, see the attached banner.

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Thank you.

How I Scripted My Marriage Proposal And Got a YES

3 comments :

My name is ‎ RABIU Qawiyy Adebayo (KORWEEY), the godson of the Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly (8th Assembly), Hon. S.O.B. Agunbiade. I finally proposed to Yewande Adeola AJOSE (YEWIS) the daughter of the M.D/C.E.O D'Jos Group of Hotels on 14th of June, 2015, and this was what I did.

June 8, 2015 (Planning Begins)

It was a cold Monday morning with wet grounds. The cloud was thick ready for another down-pour, the weather was soothing to my soul, creating that much desired "weather for two". However, I was lonely making me realize the importance of 'Her'. This one Lady of essence, the 'She' who occupies a definite space in my heart. It dawn on me, I might me staying to much out of line and needed to keep her permanently close.

She's such an amazing lady. The first day I met her, I knew she was divinely made even though I have never doubted God's sculptures, but she is a unique work of art. Irresistible, sensational and sufficiently packed with ecstasy that keeps her body merry and fresh. Quintessence of the African Queen I called her.

I decided to stepped up my bid to have her. Planning from June 8th through to June 13th, 2015. With the help of friends and colleagues, we planned a remarkable and memorable propose game to this Angel.‎ All we needed was a "fake friend's birthday" party.

June 14th, 2015 (D-Day)

Exactly 7 days after I woke up and felt the radiating splendour of nature - it was drizzling and windy but we set out to execute the plans.

Birthday Party Or The Proposal?

Arrival of Guests

The venue was Destiny Castle Hotel and by 4pm, the guests were already arriving in their numbers. Just as planned, it appeared to most people like a birthday party for a good friend of ours but to few a Proposal night.

The bride-to-be drove in late with the cake as the Baker (we actually contracted her to bake the cake), unknown to her it was her proposal cake which she thought was made for a birthday party.

After dropping the cake, she like every other guest sat by the pool side. Around that time few friends came down from the hall with a placard carrying ADEOLA WILL YOU MARRY with myself holding the placard ME. She was so embarrassed and completely lost in the unfolding event.

While she was trying to get herself together, her best friend also came in with the placard "WILL" with a Necklace, My own best friend came in with another placard baring "YOU" and a Pendant, then my fiancée's best male friend came with "MARRY" and earrings while I was on my knee with the ring and the placard "ME".

Aftermath

Guess what! She said a YES with her sonorous voice. A YES that only I could hear. It was the Seventh hour of the evening, my happiest hour as a young man. She gave me a passionate kiss and a warm hug.

I'm glad to finally have to myself the lady I have spent ages looking for. In our imperfections and in the tunnel of conflicts, we have been able to walked out this abiding intimacy. ADEOLA AJOSE, you might be reading this, You are the best thing that has ever happened to ME.‎ I LOVE YOU.

Nigeria National League: Contrasting Fortunes for Lagos Clubs, As Ikorodu United Loses #NNL

2 comments :

The tantalising actions of week 5 in the 2015/16 season of the Nigeria National League saw MFM fc of Lagos consolidating their position as leader of Division B2 of the NNL after recording a narrow win over Bendel Insurance of Edo. The hard earned 3 points took the religious club's point tally to 10 and cemented their place has week 5 division B2 leader.

Unfortunately, the same feet could not be recorded by high flying Ikorodu United as they missed the chance to dislodge Crown fc at the submit of the table, losing on the road to bottom club Ekiti United. Considering the league positions of the two teams many had thought that the match was going to be a walk in the park for Ikorodu united but the reverse was the case.

End Game!  Police arrest 30 suspected cultists in Ogun, recover arms

No comments :

No fewer than 30 suspected cultists were arrested within one week in Ijebu Ode and its environs by men of the Ogun State Police Command.

According to a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Sunday, some of the suspected cultists arrested by the police included Gbenga Banjo, popularly known as Solution; Akeem Kareem, also known as Obalufon; Dammy, Jawando(real names yet unknown) and Kazeem Akeem, also known as Obalofin.

Others are Oluwatimileyin Akintunde, popularly known as Majek; Olootu Lukman, also known EBA, Neyo(not real name) and Oladele Oluniga.

The Police spokesman said some of the suspects had been arraigned in court in Ijebu Ode.

Adejobi said police carried out raids on many black spots and hideouts such as Fidipote Street, Ogbogbo Village, Ita Alapo, Imeweje Village and some hotels in the area. where the suspects were arrested.

He said, "The raids led to the arrest of the prime suspects or ring leaders, who had been involved in many criminal acts including series of killings of people in the area and in some other parts of the state."

He said this feat was recorded through the special teams raised by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Val Ntomchukwu, to stem the tide cultism in the state, most especially in Ijebu Ode, where rival cult groups had been unleashing terror on one another.

Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said, "In its determination to stem the tide of cultism and other criminal activities in the state, the commissioner of police deployed more than 10 teams, comprising Special Anti- Robbery Squad, Anti- Robbery of the Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, Mobile Police Force, State Intelligence Bureau among others.

"These teams are led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, Shina Olukolu, and some other senior police officers to carry out operations in the Ijebu area.

"The Commissioner of Police has ordered thorough investigation into the matter.

"And he reiterated that the command will not allow any individual or group of hoodlums to truncate the existing security arrangement in the state or embarrass the command. He has vowed to take the fight against cultism and other vices to the door steps of the hoodlums."

The PPRO added that the police operatives recovered arms and ammunition from the suspected cultists.

Lagos State Must Get Special Status, Compensation From @MBuhari -Falana

No comments :

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), has asked the Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, to approach President Muhammadu Buhari and demand that Lagos State be duly compensated for single-handedly bearing the economic burden of Nigeria.

Falana said this at an event in Lagos to commemorate the annulled June 12, 1993 election.

He said even though Lagos State was not an oil-producing state, the lifting of crude oil and other related activities were done in Lagos and were having adverse effects on Lagos, infrastructure.

He noted that Lagos had the busiest airport and seaport in the country and was not being given adequate attention by the Federal Government.

He said, "Lagos State occupies a prominent place. As long as we have this distorted federalism, Lagos must go further and demand its rights in the constitution. All the pressure is on Lagos. This is the time for Lagos to ask for a special status because every graduate comes to Lagos.

"I will like to inform the governor that in respect of a judgement of the Supreme Court regarding resource control which states that if resources are being mined in your state, it is entitled to some privileges. Lagos is entitled to certain rights just like some of the Niger-Delta states.

"All the shipping activities are done in Lagos, all the aeroplanes are flying over Lagos. Lagos must go to Abuja to ask for compensation for what it is contributing to the country."

The senior advocate said Lagos State must lead by example by championing the economic revival of the South-West geopolitical zone.

Falana said the state could not continue to boast of being the richest state in Nigeria and yet be surrounded by Osun and Ekiti states which are grappling with economic crunch and kidnapping respectively.

He said, "A Yoruba adage says that a rich man in the midst of 200 poor people is the leader of the poor. If people cannot be paid salaries in Osun State, if there is kidnapping in Ekiti State and if there is poverty in the South-West, Lagos cannot continue to boast of wealth. Lagos must join and lead the economic rejuvenation of the Yoruba land which Chief Obafemi Awolowo governed and we are all proud of. Lagos must be part of the Odua investment, you cannot be alone."

Falana said Buhari must not remove fuel subsidy but should rather recover the monies that have gone missing through the monumental fraud in the petroleum sector.

Full text of President Buhari’s speech at AU Summit’s opening session

No comments :

Excellencies fellow Presidents and Heads of Government

Excellency Mr. Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations,

Excellency Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Chairperson of the AU Commission,

Excellencies, Heads of Delegation,

Invited Guests, Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen

1. Please permit me to join previous speakers in conveying my delegation's appreciation to our host, H.E. President Jacob Zuma, to his Government, and the brotherly people of South Africa for their warm hospitality, and for the excellent arrangements made for our comfort and for the success of our meetings. As this is my first address at this august assembly, may I also congratulate H.E. Dr. Robert Gabriel Mugabe, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, for his unanimous election as the Chairman of our Union.

2. I feel highly honoured and extremely pleased to be able to address you today, barely two weeks after my inauguration as the President of Nigeria, following the 2015 Presidential election in my country. That process, which was adjudged as the fairest and most credible in the history of elections in Nigeria, was midwifed by the dogged and sustained determination of the Nigerian people, and their desire to deepen our democracy. Their quest was amply supported, and even encouraged by the goodwill of our friends and partners in the international community. I therefore wish to seize this opportunity to convey my very deep appreciation to all those who contributed to the success of that election.

3. My election has been described as historic. I agree that it is indeed historic because for the first time in the practice of democracy in my country, an opposition Party has defeated the ruling Party in a keenly contested election. The election was also held against the backdrop of the fears and concerns expressed both in Nigeria and among our international friends abroad and partners that the outcome of the election could spell doom for Nigeria. I am glad that even though those fears and concerns were not without basis, the outcome was totally different, to the relief of all of us.

4. I cannot fail to acknowledge the very positive role played by my predecessor, H.E. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, in averting the feared crisis, and in facilitating the peaceful transition of power between the two parties. I also wish to express my deep appreciation to all who honoured us with their presence at my inauguration, and even those, who for unavoidable reasons were unable to attend. I thank you all.

Mr. Chairman,

5. It is gratifying to note that our Union has made laudable progress over the past one and a half decades since its transformation from the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to the African Union (AU). Notably, we have been able to redirect our priorities at the continental level from mainly political goals to more diverse aspirations that are equally fundamental to our survival and development in a global community.

6. It is however clear, Mr. Chairman, that some of the greater challenges to our peoples within this Union still lie in the political, economic, as well as peace and security spheres. Our continent is currently bedevilled by the twin evils of terrorism and insecurity; poverty, youth unemployment, and underdevelopment. The destructive effects of the inhuman and criminal campaigns of the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria and neighbouring countries; the Al-Shabab attacks in East Africa, and the activities of the Al-Qaida in the Maghreb, all bear testimony to a continent under siege.

Mr Chairman,

Excellencies and Colleagues

7. On our part, I was convinced on my assumption of office that the best approach would be to work within the framework of the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) to mobilse collective support to fight against Boko Haram. I have in this regard, directed the relocation of Nigeria's Command Centre to place it closer to the theatre of action. Furthermore, I have vigorously engaged the members states of the LCBC to better coordinate the strategies and tactics in fighting the insurgency in the region. I believe that this approach can be enhanced through complimentary regional and continental efforts.

8. The images in the international mass media of African youths getting drowned in the Mediterranean sea on their illegal attempts, and often times illusory hope of attaining better life in Europe is not only an embarrassment to us as leaders, but dehumanises our persons. Indeed, they combine to paint a very unfavourable picture of our peoples and countries.

9. Those of us gathered here today owe it as a duty to reverse this ugly trend. We must put an end to the so-called push factors that compel our young men and women to throw caution to the winds and risk life, limbs and all, on this dangerous adventure. We must redouble our efforts to sustain the economic development of our countries, ensure empowerment of our youths, create more jobs, improve and upgrade our infrastructure, and above all continue the enthronement of a regime of democracy, good governance and respect for human rights and rule of law. These and other measures that engender peace and stability must be pursued relentlessly.

10. In this connection, we must persist in our collective endeavour to work together through the African Union and our respective Regional Economic Communities (RECs), to uplift our continent and provide the African peoples the enabling environment for the realization of their legitimate dreams and aspirations. At this juncture, let me assure you of the unflinching commitment of Nigeria to the ideals and aspirations of the African Union as explained in the Agenda 2063, which is geared towards ensuring a peaceful, prosperous and integrated Africa in the next 50 years. It is for this reason that Nigeria is fully and irrevocably committed to the ECOWAS vision.

11. We do so because we believe that African integration is best attained through the instrumentality of our Regional Economic Communities (RECs) as the building blocs of viable continental institutions. Nigeria will therefore continue to play her part in supporting the African Union Commission and other continental and regional institutions in their efforts to prioritize African development in all sectors of human endeavour.

12. The journey might look arduous, but certainly not impossible. There are opportunities in every challenge. If and when we adopt this call for a change of attitude, approach, and disposition towards agreed protocols and commitments, we shall be bequeathing a politically stable, economically developed, and socially harmonious Africa, thereby justifying the confidence reposed in us by our electorates. We will also demonstrate our qualities as statesmen and true daughters and sons of Africa.

Gyan, Ayew Led Ghanaian Team To 7-1 Victory Over Mauritius

No comments :

Asamoah Gyan and Jordan Ayew both scored twice as Ghana beat Mauritius 7-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Ghana were beaten on penalties by Ivory Coast in this year's final and they looked determined to make up for that heartache in Sunday's Group H fixture in Accra.

They had far too much quality for Mauritius, who have only reached the tournament once in their history, back in 1974.

After Christian Atsu put Ghana in front, Ayew netted his first and Gyan scored twice as the home side ran riot in the first half.

JS Piesie pulled one back for the visitors but Ayew doubled his tally seven minutes before half time as Ghana head into the break firmly on top.

See Who Will Lead AC Milan Football Club

No comments :

Sinisia Mihajlovic has revealed he will be AC Milan's new coach within the next two weeks after attending an event organised by a sponsor of the club.

The former Inter defender recently left Sampdoria after spending two years in charge and is now the favourite to replace Filippo Inzaghi at San Siro.

The 46 year old spoke to journalists at the event in Le Mans and said: "Do not worry, in two weeks I will be the coach of Milan."

Carlo Ancelotti was Milan's first choice but has opted to take a year out of the game after he was sacked by Real Madrid, which meant they have instead turned their attention to Mihajlovic.

However, the Rossoneri are yet to agree a severance package with Inzaghi after offering him a €600,000 pay off, which could delay
the Serbian's arrival.

Further reports in Italy have claimed the coach will visit Milan on Tuesday to map out his plans for next season with the club's QCEO Adriano Galliani.

Unending Battle! How To Become A Committee Chairman In NASS

No comments :

With the dust over the leadership of the National Assembly, NASS, gradually settling, the battle for the control of the soul of the national legislature has shifted to who controls each of the 90 powerful standing committees.

No doubt, it will be a tit for tat scenario as all those instrumental to the emergence both Senator Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara on board as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively in last week's election, ‎are patiently waiting for the payday.

It was learnt over the weekend that these distinguished honourables who went against the position of their Political party particularly those in the All Progressives Congress, had already positioned themselves for prime chairmanship slots in both chambers and have made their ambitions clearly known to the two leaders of the NASS.

In essence, the lobbyists had warned that although the key committees should be headed by men and women with cognate experience in the relevant fields, they must be given priority because of the role they played in bringing on board the new leadership against the backdrop of the opposition from their party against them.

Many members are expecting a repeat of what afflicted the 7th Assembly when members of the selecting committee raised by Speaker Tambuwal to select members for the 90 standing committees ended up as Chairmen and Vice chairmen of the committees to the chagrin of the majority, who felt short-changed.
