‎Last week was my birthday. My wife didn't wish me a happy birthday, my parents forgot and so did my kids. I went to work, even my colleagues didn't wish me.
As I entered my cabin my secretary said,
"Happy Birthday Boss!"‎
I felt so special, she asked me out to lunch. After lunch, she invited me to her apartment and we went there.
She said, "Do you mind if I go into the bedroom for a minute?"
"Okay", I said.‎
She came out 5 minutes later with a cake, my wife, my parents, my kids, my friends and my colleagues all screaming, "SURPRISE!!!"
...And I was waiting on the sofa. N»KED!

Lobatan! Reports Says Okada Now Causes Impotence, Kidney Disorder, More

In this part of the world where our transportation system leaves much to be desired, motorcycles, commonly called okada, are a necessary evil. This is not unconnected with the fact that they are a quick means of transport, they are efficient in mitigating traffic jams which most cities are renowned for, they get to areas which are ordinarily unmotorable and they are available throughout day and night hours. Since their introduction into the country and use for commercial purposes, they have continued to increase exponentially and based on this, the cases of motorcycle accidents have equally skyrocketed.

A visit to the Accident and Emergency wards of hospitals, especially teaching hospitals, in cities where okadas are still in operation, would attest to the fact that the occupational risk of this group of people should indeed be a source of concern. According to Dr Ademola Ajibade, a medical practitioner, "motorcycle injuries are among the leading causes of disability and deaths and the main victims are the motorcyclists, passengers and pedestrians in their young reproductive age group. In fact, motorcycle accidents are far more likely than other vehicular accidents. Motorcycle riders are the most vulnerable groups of road users."

The reason for this may not be far-fetched. Motorcyclists, especially the young ones, tend to speed too much and overload their motorcycles for quick returns and they are usually reckless, undisciplined and have a lack of respect for other road users. Dr Ajibade adds that the majority of them don't wear any protective gear, including helmets and this aggravates the risks of getting severe head injuries and even death in the event of an accident.

Saturday Tribune findings revealed that some of the reasons for non-compliance with the use of protective gear and the practice of safe road use among motorcycle riders included ignorance of the importance of the use of protective gear, a general disposition towards lawlessness, lack of education on proper road use and traffic laws, the cost of the gears as well as the abuse of drugs and use of alcohol.

Besides the obvious risk of accidents which motorcycle riders and their passengers are exposed to, there are other concerns that they should make conscious efforts to consider in order to enjoy optimal health at their occupation.

One health hazard associated with okada riding, especially for long periods at a time, is the exposure to pollutants, especially from their motorcycles and other vehicles on the road. According to experts, motorcycle riders are exposed to pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds and particulate matter in ambient air, and these may affect lung function. It has been discovered that the inhalation of these automobile pollutants can cause respiratory problems.

Moreover, extreme vibrations due to the performance of the motorcycle engine, improper structural design of the motorcycle (evident in the type of seating and type of suspension), bad road conditions, age of the motorcycle are also potential sources of health problems. Experts state that the human body can tolerate certain levels of vibrational energy but starts to deteriorate and cause long-term damage and disruption of the natural processes of the body at other levels of vibration. These vibrations are transmitted to the buttocks and back along the vertical axis via the base and back of the seat. On the other hand, the pedals and handle transmit additional vibrations to the feet and hands of the rider. During motorcycle riding, due to its unbalancing nature, it creates enormous vibration and affects the bioelectric phenomena. A study of "Vibration and its effect on health of the motorcycle rider" published in the April-June 2010 edition of Online Journal of Health and Allied Sciences pointed out that at varying frequencies of vibrations, certain health effects can occur ranging from motion sickness, chest and abdominal pain, backache, intestine and bladder problems to degradation in visual functions. These vibrations are in the form of Hand Arm Vibrations and Whole Body Vibrations. Health effects that associated with Whole Body Vibration and especially the driving environment have been discovered to include piles, high blood pressure, kidney disorders and impotence.

Where vehicles provide protection against harsh weather conditions through the presence of windscreens, okadas lack such and as a result, their riders are exposed to extreme weather "They ride in the scorching sun, windy weather and sometimes even in the rain and most times, without the proper protective clothing. Protective gear do not stop at helmets. They also include high-visibility vests, boots, gloves. Not only are helmets supposed to protect the head in the case of accidents, they are also there to protect the face from the wind, flying objects and insects which could enter the eyes, nose or ears," Dr Ajibade said.

Also importantly is the increased risk of reproductive problems. A Japanese study of 234 avid motorcyclists between the ages of 20 and 60 found significantly higher Erectile Dysfunction (ED) across all age ranges compared to a control group. Among bikers aged 50 to 59, 93 per cent had ED, compared to 42 per cent of the controls. A subsequent study of 150 Japanese motorcyclists by the same authors also found that not only was the rate of ED more than three times greater among motorcyclists than the control group, but there was a clear link between their ED and other lower urinary tract disorders. The likeliest culprit was constant vibration from both the engine and the road.

Physical strain is also an issue to grapple with. "The physical strain can cause problems with joints such as knees and wrists. When riding a motorcycle, the body position constricts regular blood flow to the feet, ankles and knees, depending on the type of bike design. This is why you sometimes notice swelling on the feet of okada riders who drive for long periods. Appropriate compression socks can help to improve leg circulation, lowering swelling while riding," Dr. Irene Bassey, general practitioner at Orbitals Clinic, Lagos State, said.

Though they have been banned in some states, they still pose a significant health and safety risk in places where they are operational and moreso, where there is no insistent on the use of protective gear. According to Mr. Temiloluwa Gbarada, a health, safety and environment professional, "Whenever one is on an okada, the miracle is that one arrives at his place of destination in one piece. From a safety perspective, okadas, by default, are an accident waiting to happen. In risk assessment safety standards, riding or being a passenger on an okada is way above the acceptable risk limit because it's not balanced, there is no protective covering (like a windscreen) and because of their size, they are most often ignored by other vehicle users. If at all, it has to be used, then personal protective equipment like helmets and full body protective clothing (padded) should be worn."

Why I stopped wearing revealing cloths -Bimbo Akintola

Add BBN on 2BAFB965

Popular Nollywood actress, Bimbo Akintola, tells Ademola Olonilua about her style

Your face has been scarce for a while. What have you been working on?
I have been working on a movie called Antique. The movie is about how Nigerians trivialise things that are important to our history especially the way we sell our antiques. If you do not have a history, you cannot have a future. If you say that the Benin Empire used to do certain things in the olden days, then you have to back such statements up with proof and evidence. If we sell all our antiques, we have no proof to back up our story. It would just be hearsay. We had so many arts from the Benin Empire but most of them have been stolen or sold.

But you hardly feature in epic movies
I have never acted in an epic movie. But I chose to be a part of this movie because of the person that called me, Oliver. He is a very good friend of mine. He was in the University of Ife when I was at the University of Ibadan. When he called me to be a part of his movie, I agreed.

Why don't you feature in epic movies?
I don't act epic movies because I find the costumes annoying. I really don't like exposing my body anymore. Before, I was into that kind of fashion but not anymore. I also feel that they do not do historical movies very well in Nigeria. If I must partake in any, the costume has to be right, the buildings have to be in line with the movie, and everything has to be right. In most movies, they just fabricate everything and that is not proper.

Why did you stop wearing revealing clothes?
I indulged in that when I was much younger. Now that I am older, I have decided to tone everything down. Nobody tells you to stop some things you do; you just do them.

Why do you always dress in black outfits?
It is because black is my most favourite colour. I have always loved black even though my mother had a huge problem with it. She threw away my clothes at a time because they were all black. I did not have any other colour but black in my wardrobe, so I did not wear any other colour. She normally told me that I was not mourning, so I should stop wearing black clothes. I am glad black is no longer the colour for mourning, it is now white. My mother did not understand that black is beautiful. I think it is the most beautiful colour on earth.

Does your busty nature hinder you from wearing certain clothes?
It has never been a problem for me because I am not as busty as a lot of ladies. I believe I am still moderate. It is just that my top size is bigger than my bottom because of my chest.

It is often said that men prefer ladies that are busty, how true is the claim?

It is not true. It was the case before but now, everybody wants to have big buttocks. It is all about the behind and that is what is in vogue now.

Since that is the in thing now, are you doing anything to make your buttocks bigger?
God forbid! I am okay with the way God created me. I believe I am perfect the way I am. I cannot do anything to my buttocks. I like the way it is.

But what if you have the opportunity to go under the surgeon's knife for free, wouldn't you want to alter any part of your body?
I doubt there is anything that I would want to change in my body. I love my body the way it is.

What can't you be caught dead wearing?
When I was younger, I was a tomboy, so I was always wearing trousers. You would never catch me in a dress except I was working. At that point in my life, I did not have any dress. Eventually I got to a stage where I sewed short dresses, I tried them on and I fell in love with them. Now, I think the only dresses I cannot wear are the vulgar and tacky ones.

So you cannot wear short skirts?
I still wear short skirts but not as much as before and they are mostly casual dresses. The new fashion trend in the world now is nudity, people are going naked and that is something I would not do. I would not wear clothes that would seem as if I am naked.

But some celebrities feel comfortable enough in their skin to pose nude
I am comfortable in my skin but I cannot pose nude. I do not want to share my skin with everybody else. I would not do that.

At what point did you stop being a tomboy?
I don't think there was anything that influenced me. I had a lot of energy while growing up and I used to climb trees and fences a lot. When I discovered short dresses, I ditched being a tomboy. I was about 19 years old.

You must have had lots of scars to show for being a tomboy?
If I show you my legs, you will see the scars there. I have scars all over. Anytime I had an injury and my mother was treating me, she normally used to say I would not be able to wear mini-skirts because of my wounds but I never bothered about it. Whenever she said that, I always told myself that it didn't matter because I was not interested in wearing mini-skirts. I never cared about the scars because I did not think it was a big deal.

What fashion item would you not leave home without?
I cannot leave home without my lip balm; not lipstick, lip balm.

How often do you patronise Nigerian designers?
I use them as often as I can. I have bags, slippers and belts that are made from adire fabric. It was a Nigerian designer that made them for me. I think Nigerian fashion is amazing.

What is your most expensive fashion item?
It has to be my hair. I love hair a lot. Some of my shoes also cost a lot. I cannot say the amount I spend on my hair because I do not want people to beat me up. I used to visit the salon every ten days but now I go weekly. Most times, I wash my hair and braid it.

You don't seem to fancy applying make-up on your face?
It is too stressful. It is so bad I cannot draw my eyebrows myself. It is really bad.

Has your career influenced your style in any way?
Yes, it has because if not for acting, I would not be this glamorous. I am very comfortable in tights and T-shirts. I used to love jeans till I stumbled on tights. We live in a hot country where the weather is hot and tights and T-shirt are stuffs I could wear every day.

What is your fashion weakness?
My fashion weakness is shoes. I don't know how many pairs of shoes I have but I have a room filled with shoes. The room is dedicated to my shoes alone.

What fashion item do you admire in a man?
I would say the way clothes look on the person and not the clothes themselves. I like to see a man that looks good in whatever he is wearing.

What fashion mistakes have you made in the past?
I have made all sorts of fashion mistakes. I cannot remember any one right now because I don't take them seriously. I remember there was a time I went to a movie premiere in casual clothes. I did not feel odd at all. It was later that people told me that I should have dressed appropriately and I asked them why. I felt what I wore was okay, because left to me, I would wear tights and T-shirts to movie premieres. Fashion means being comfortable for me.

How come you do not have any tattoos on your body?
I cannot do that because I am very lazy. I cannot allow someone use needles on me because I am very skittish. It is painful and I cannot stand it. I like to see people wear them but I cannot.

Do you bleach your skin?
No, I don't and I have never. I think there is a lot of focus on bleaching and it has not changed anything. I think we should focus on the reason people bleach their skin. People say women bleach but I have seen a lot of men that bleach their skin in Nigeria. The number of men bleaching their skin in Nigeria is very high. They do so because they do not believe that their natural complexion is good enough. They do not believe that black is beautiful and amazing. I think it is inferiority complex when you think that being white is better than what you are.

There is now a public outcry from parents and students of the Afe Babalola University, Ado (ABUAD), Ekiti State over the recent obnoxious increment in fees. BlackBox Nigeria gathered that Medical students are now expected to pay a whooping N2.6Million from the initial N1.2Million they were previously paying.

BBN further discovered that the fees which was initially N900,000 was increased to N1.7Million only a couple of months ago and now to an outrageous N2.6Million.

Some of the students who bared their minds on the new fee regime expressed disappointment in the management of the citadel owned by legal luminary Aare Afe Babalola.

"Behold the most expensive university in Nigeria. In view of the current hike in fees which is really bizarre we as students have expressed our sincere disappointment but this is not a single battle. Initially, the fees was approximately N1.7m but rose overnight to N2.6m. Our parents are complaining and we are feeling their pains because they want us to achieve our dreams.
We really need the social media to join us in this battle. This exploitation must stop. We can't protest because we will be expelled" A student wrote.

Another student disclosed;
"I  a 300level Medical Student at the Afe Babalola University. I would like to use this medium to inform you that there was an increase in the fees of medical students at the clinical level today by over 1.4 million Naira totaling the fee to about 2.6 million Naira.
There had been an outrageous and unacceptable outcry by the students. Please your support in this fight against extortion and exploitation would be so much appreciated by the entire student community."

The new fee regime is expected to commence from 16th March, 2015 according to a document signed by the school"s registrar.

It's hilarious! This dude is really pained. LOL
Read below...

AN OPEN LETTER TO COCA COLA!
The MD/CEO Coca Cola Nigeria and Worldwide

Sir/Madam‎
Let me start by saying a 'Big kudos' to your company for a fantastic idea, "Share A Coke". It's indeed an awesome innovation! But then let me quickly bring to your notice that following the wonderful strategy of share a coke, collect a coke or buy a coke, whatever name you call it. Where someone's name is written on the (plastic) Coke bottle or Can.

I have noticed with total dismay that 'Nobody Has Shared or Bought any form or shape of Coke for me'!
And this is because, according to my little research, your company hasn't deemed it fit to include my name, Avalon, on your 'Share A Coke' production
plans. This is grossly unacceptable!
Considering the fact that i own several t-shirts with an inscription of the above brand and I am a bonafide card carrying member of the Coca Cola drinking family, because I have been drinking Coke since I was born. This thing is painful!

Having presented this case of deliberate exclusion of my name from the 'Share A Coke' strategy which has denied me of my 'Customer and Membership Right' respectively, I would like to use this medium to request at this point, that your company should, as a matter of urgency, produce some bottles of Coke with my name, boldly written on it "AVALON", in whatever shape or size, so that people can share at least a bottle of Coke with me occasionally, if
not daily.

Please, kindly note that if after 3days from the day this letter must have gotten to you, and I'm yet to see anybody share a coke with me, I'll publicly tear my Coca Cola membership card and make sure
I invite ChannelsTv to cover it, then I and my family, relatives and anybody that knows me will stop drinking Coca Cola no matter how many times your advert plays on TV/Radio.
Thanks as I anticipate your timely response.
Yours faithfully,
@dj_staffy

President Goodluck Jonathan said on Friday in Lagos that victory for the Peoples Democratic Party in the upcoming general elections would free Lagos residents from oppression.

He stated this when the leaders of market women groups, known as Iyalojas, in Lagos and environs, paid him a solidarity visit at the State House, Marina, Lagos.

Jonathan, who was reacting to the complaint of high-handedness and witch-hunting made by the market women against the All Progressives Congress-led Lagos State Government.

He told the market women, and indeed, all traders in the country that the PDP administration would provide the enabling environment for them to ply their trades.

"Our victory at the polls will free all Lagos traders from oppression. You need to be free; we will remove Lagos from bondage,'' he said.

He commended the women for supporting his re-election bid and urged them not to be intimidated by their opponents.

The President added, "I have listened to you; you have been carrying the PDP flag; you have been humiliated but you still marched on.‎
"Thank you for working hard for PDP; this is the final struggle and time for us to use all our strength to achieve victory.
"If we struggle and win Lagos State, everybody will do his business without being harassed or intimidated."

Earlier, the leader of the market women, Hajia Aminat Hussein, had told the president that they had stood behind PDP since its inception but regretted that the members suffered harassment under in Lagos State.

She said in spite of the attempts by APC "to buy over many of the market women", the women would mobilise themselves in the state and in other states to ensure victory for the president.
"We are promising you that you will not lose in Lagos; this coming election is for Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and God is with you,'' she added.

FG Move To Ensure School Teachers Have A Minimum Of A Degree

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
THE Federal Government has disclosed plans to make university first degree as the minimum teaching qualification in Nigeria.

Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, who gave this hint on Thursday, while receiving Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Pirjo Suomela-Chowdhury, said the Federal Government would explore all measures to restore the respect, dignity and status of teachers in the country.

Suomela-Chowdhury, had told the minister that all teachers in Finland had minimum of Masters Degree and that teaching is a highly competitive profession because of huge interest by many qualified people.

The minister, who said the target of the Federal Government was to make first degree minimum teaching qualification, noted that from 1980 the minimum teaching qualification to teach was National Certificate in Education (NCE).

He said this could be increased to first degree, adding that currently, there are a number of graduates teaching in primary schools in the country.

Shekarau, recalled that the country was able to get over the practice in the past, where primary school leavers were engaged to teach, saying "the level was raised to Teacher Grade 3 in the 60's and later on in early 70's, it was minimum of Grade 2, and this was later phased out in early 80's to minimum of NCE.

"Gradually we will get there. We hope that a day will come when all our schools, including pre-primary, will be handled by university graduates.

The rate at which our universities are increasing shows, soon, that will be our target. We have a lot to learn from each other, regardless of the factor of the size. The challenges are the same," he said.

Shekarau added that, apart from the general agenda of government for improving access and quality of education, his particular concern as minister was to improve the quality of teachers.

He said: "We must continuously increase the number of teachers, improve the quality of teachers, improve the condition of teacher training institutions and continuously review the curriculum of teacher education to make sure it catches up with the challenges, address the issues of teachers' welfare and job security."

Recently, Mavin Records sensation Reekado Banks released the hit 'Katapot' produced by Don Jazzy and, almost immediately after its release, it went viral online with insinuations that the track is directed at D'banj and ex-Mavin signee Wande Coal.

The song has lines like, "If dem like make dem fire katapot of envy, throw us bomb of jealousy, stand dey eye our progress; dem no fit put asunder. I swear, dey cannot stop our love." These specific lines were considered by some as direct attacks on both singers.

However, the prolific music producer was quick to explain that, contrary to rumours making the rounds, he does not do "diss" songs and does not intend to start now.‎

Former Nigeria captain Austin 'Jay Jay' Okocha has been elected as the new chairman of the Delta State Football Association on Friday. Okocha, 41, polled 26 out of 27 votes to win the seat and replace

Amaju Pinnick who vacated the role after becoming president of the Nigeria Football Federation September 2014.
The former PSG, Bolton Wanderers and Hull City player becomes one of the few former footballers to enjoy such huge transition from the field into the boardroom in Nigerian football.

Racism! UEFA POWERLESS AGAINST CHELSEA

Uefa president Michel Platini says the organisation is powerless to take any action against the group of Chelsea supporters caught in a racism storm even as Blues boss, Jose Mourinho and owner Roman Abramovich condemned the actions of a small number of fans who were filmed preventing a black man from entering the Paris metro on Tuesday before singing "we're racist, and that's the way we like it".

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has since added his voice to the growing outrage surrounding the incident, but Platini has stressed Uefa cannot take any direct action given the scene did not occur within the confines of a football event.
"We cannot purnish," he told RMC. "We can purnish what happens in the stadium, or within the stadium perimeter but outside, on the metro, what do you want me to do?
I don't have the means or the power to do it. I can recommend clubs to pay attention to their supporters and see what they can potentially
do. But it's difficult to punish."

A total of five fans have so far been suspended from attending games at Stamford Bridge by Chelsea as they continue to investigate the
incident, which occurred prior to the 1-1 Champions League draw with Paris Saint Germain.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed Thierry Henry has taken up a coaching role at Arsenal within the club's academy. Wenger revealed late last year that the club's all-time top scorer could take up a backroom role after bringing the
curtain down on his stellar playing career.

The 37-year-old began work at the club recently with a view to earning his coaching badges, and Wenger is confident the World Cup winning former striker's experience will benefit Arsenal's youngsters.

Thierry Henry is making his first steps as a coach," Wenger confirmed to reporters. "It's good for our youngsters to be coached by him. He's been here once or twice. All our former players are welcome to come back here and get their coaching badges. We're happy to have him.

Henry spent eight years at Arsenal, during which time he won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups before moving on to join
Barcelona.
