Let's Emulate Christ...Read President Jonathan's Christmas Message

Dear Compatriots,
I greet and felicitate with you all once again as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. I join all of our Christian compatriots in giving thanks to God Almighty for the divine gift of Jesus Christ the Messiah whose earthly incarnation we commemorate today.

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ who the Prophet Isaiah heralded as the Prince of Peace and Wonderful Counselor, I believe it is very appropriate that we all, Christians and non-Christians alike, reflect more deeply on the virtues and ideals which the Messiah espoused during his earthly mission.‎

To my mind, there can be no doubt that the greater internalization of the virtues of love for our fellowmen, tolerance, Godliness, honesty, fairness to others, selflessness, and peaceful co-existence with others, by all adult Nigerians, and the inculcation of the same in our youth,  will definitely help our dear nation to overcome most of its present challenges.

Peace and love for others, especially, were a constant refrain in the Messiah's teachings and admonitions to mankind.

Therefore, as we celebrate his birth, I urge all Nigerians to offer special prayers for a greater manifestation of divine peace in our country and the vanquishing of all demons of hatred, divisiveness and disunity in our midst.

As we celebrate Christmas, let us also remember and offer special prayers for all of our countrymen, women and children who have suffered and continue to suffer untold hardship, deprivation and death at the hands of terrorists and insurgents.

Let us also continue to pray for our gallant soldiers and security agents who remain at the forefront of the national effort to overcome terrorism and violent extremism, even as the rest of the nation celebrates Christmas and the coming New Year.

In this season of goodwill, I urge all patriotic Nigerians to rededicate themselves to doing all within their powers to support the brave men and women of our armed forces in the ongoing war against terrorism, and also support the Federal Government's efforts to provide more succour to the hapless victims of terrorist atrocities.

The Victims' Support Fund which we have established to raise additional funds to assist our compatriots who have been adversely affected by continuing insecurity in parts of our country remains active.

I call on all individuals and corporate organisations who have not yet done so, to donate more generously to the Fund which is being efficaciously deployed to ease the sufferings of victims of terrorist violence in the country.

Dear Compatriots, we are also celebrating this Christmas against the background of preparations for next year's general elections.

I seize this opportunity to reassure the nation that my administration will give the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) all necessary support to ensure that it delivers very free, fair, credible and acceptable elections in 2015.

National security agencies will also be given all necessary support to enhance their ability to ensure that the elections which should strengthen democracy in our country are peaceful and violence free.

I urge our political class to be law- abiding and place the greater interests of our nation above all personal or sectional interests in the countdown to the elections.

Let us all be more statesman-like, conduct issues-based campaigns, and eschew the promotion of falsehood, division and hatred of others as we seek the votes of our countrymen in what should be a peaceful competition among contending points of view for the progress and development of our dear nation.

I remain convinced that God Almighty is still  with us as a nation even in the midst of our current challenges which we shall surely overcome with greater unity of purpose, dedication, commitment and perseverance.

Let this year's celebration of the birth of Christ the Messiah rekindle, strengthen and reaffirm our faith in our national ability to overcome all challenges, with God on our side.

I wish you all very happy Christmas celebrations.

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR

Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) ,the presidential. candidate of APC has felicitated with Christians in the country as they mark Christmas, assuring them that Nigerians would have better reasons to celebrate the festival if elected in 2015.

In a goodwill message signed by the Director of Communications, Buhari Campaign Organisation, Mr. Dele Alake, Buhari expressed displeasure over security challenges in the country and the poor state of Nigerian roads.

According to him, many Nigerians travelling towards the eastern part would encounter the failed promises of the Second Niger Bridge, those travelling through the South-West would have to bear the gridlock on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Buhari , who also condemned rising poverty in the country, said, "In a nation where a few individuals could raise N21bn because they want to make their friend president, millions of citizens, who truly own the resources being accumulated by a few, are left to suffer in sorrow, tears and blood.

He noted that millions of Nigerians celebrate the Christmas season in poverty and misery because "the system of production and distribution of national resources have been rigged against the vast majority of our people."

He said, "We promise that, by Christmas 2015, our administration would have brought out efficiency in management and allocation of public resources.‎

As the quest to occupy Lagos State government house intensifies, politicians are not leaving any stone unturned.

"No doubt, as we embark upon the last set of laps for this all-important task; our fitness and wellness are paramount to how much work we can do, how many persons we can speak to and how many undecided voters we can swing," Team A+ wrote.

The event scheduled for Saturday, December 27, 2014, is also meant to unite supporters for the Ambode mission. Members are to converge by 7am at Maryland Round About before proceeding to Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.

Crisis Hits Gabon As President Is Accused Of Being A Nigerian

A French newspaper, Le Monde has attempted to clear doubts over the nationality of Gabonese president Ali Bongo by publishing the original copy of his birth certificate. The controversy started recently when a French journalist and author Pierre Pean reported that Ali Bongo was not the biological son of the late Gabonese leader Omar Bongo.

Some sources have hinted that Le Monde newspaper got the birth certificate from a former French officer stationed in the Congo during the colonial era. Gabonese opposition groups have however dismissed the document as a "fabrication" by the French to prevent an uprising against a foreigner running their country. It is important to include in this report that President Ali Bongo had filed in France a complaint against Pierre Pean author of a book defending the theses that he is of Nigerian heritage.‎

News reaching BlackBox Nigeria from Johannesburg, South Africa, have it that President Jacob Zuma may be set to take his 5th wife.

Zuma hinted he may be ready to take a fifth wife to accompany him through old age, South Africa daily newspaper The Star said Wednesday.

During a visit to a Durban township Tuesday in KwaZulu-Natal, the 72-year-old said in Zulu "Angakayakhi indlu yokugugela… laba ngisabathathile nje" (I do have wives but I'm yet to marry my last one).

The crowd, most of them elderly, laughed and cheered, The Star said.

Sihawu Ngubane, a professor at KwaZulu-Natal University, was quoted by the newspaper as saying it was fairly standard among Zulu people for a man who practises polygamy to take a last wife for his last years, sometimes the younger sister of one of his wives.

"They call the last wife 'indlu yokugugela' (the home in which I will age in) because the responsibility of looking after the husband in their old age predominantly lies with the junior wife, who is often younger than the other wives and more agile in case there is an emergency," he said.

Zuma, who has around 20 children, has married six times but currently has four wives on the state's budget, despite criticism from some tax-payers.

A heavy duty truck, conveying crates of soft drinks, yesterday, at the Okorodafe Roundabout in Ughelli, Delta State, crushed a four-month-old baby girl, who had fallen off the back of her mother travelling on a commercial motorcycle, popularly known as Okada.

According to witnesses, the mother of the baby, who is in her 30s and simply identified as Ese, was said to have been struggling to adjust the wrapper with which she strapped the baby to her back, while the Okada was in motion.

One of the witnesses, identified as Efemena Okiemute, told Vanguard that the baby fell on the middle of the road and was immediately crushed by the truck, which was directly behind the Okada.

When Vanguard visited the scene, officials of Ughelli Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, were seen clearing the remains of the dead baby from the road.‎

Odd World! Man Docked For Kidnapping Friend's Daughter

A suspected abductor, Mathew Alhaji, has been apprehended by policemen attached to Warewa Police Station, Ogun State, for abducting his friend's daughter (name withheld).

Our correspondent gathered that Alhaji and Mr. Agbotome Denis, who adopted the victim, had been friends for two years.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect abducted the 13-year-year-old girl, around the Arepo area of the state on Sunday, December 14 while she was hawking fura.

Our correspondent also learnt that the victim and her sister, Taiye, had left home   around 9am on the fateful day, but the latter came back at 1pm.

Her parents said they became confused when she did not return home at about 4pm.

PUNCH Metro, however, learnt that the victim had almost sold all the wraps of her goods when Alhaji offered to give her a ride home in his car.

The suspect, who was said to be in his 30s, reportedly threatened to kill her when she raised the alarm that the car was not heading for her residence on Isijola Avenue, OPIC Estate.

However, Alhaji was said to have freed the victim last Sunday, seven days after she was locked up in a room.

It was learnt that the suspect was eventually arrested on the same day after the family reported the incident at the station.

Speaking with our correspondent, the victim said her abductor left her in isolation all day although he did not touch her.

She said "Two wraps of fura were left in my tray when Alhaji saw me and offered to take me home. They were three inside that car, but I do not know other two. I told him not to bother that I wanted to collect money from some customers along the way home, but he insisted and promised to stop by for me to do so.

"As we moved on, I complained that that was not the route to my house. He shut me up and vowed to kill me if I shouted. He threw my tray away and took me to a room.

"He would place food before me and lock me up in the morning until he came back in the evening. He did not do anything to me. When he eventually released me, I was unable to locate home. It was my mother's friend that saw me wandering around and took me home."

Denis, a national of Benin Republic, said he could not fathom the rationale behind his friend's action.

"He always comes to our house and all my children know him as my friend. There is no misunderstanding between us and I do not know why he did that," he said.

The Ogun State Police Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed Alhaji's arrest, adding that he would be prosecuted.

He said, "Yes, the man Mathew Alhaji, as he is called, was arrested by the police for abduction.

"He is in our custody. He will be charged to court soon."‎

APC in trouble! Obanikoro Pledges Support For Jimi Agbaje Following GEJ's Intervention

The immediate past Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has said he will work with the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, to wrest power from the All Progressives Congress.

Obanikoro had been engaged in a war of words with Agbaje and a leader of the PDP in the state, Chief Bode George, over the party's controversial governorship primary.

Obanikoro had also sued the party for not attending to a petition he wrote over the party's conduct of the primary which he described as a sham.

However, the Director-General, Koro Campaign Organisation, Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, told our correspondent on the telephone that President Goodluck Jonathan had intervened in the feud.

He said part of the terms of the agreement reached with the President was that Obanikoro would be given a senior ministerial slot and not minister of state which is a junior ministerial position.

He said, "We have listened to the President's appeal and have decided to settle out of court. Obanikoro will return as a minister but part of the terms is that he will be given a full ministerial position. We were told that he would head a ministry but we were not told what ministry in particular.

"He will help the President to campaign in Lagos and we will also work with Agbaje. We are willing to work with Chief Bode George and we will reconcile with the party."

The development comes less than 24 hours after the PDP South-West chairman, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe, called on the PDP leadership to ensure that aggrieved aspirants in the state were appeased because Lagos could determine who wins the presidential elections.

He had said, "When Ayodele Fayose emerged as the candidate of the PDP in Ekiti, we went to beg all other aspirants in their houses to ensure that we got victory in all the 16 local governments in Ekiti. You cannot win it all alone."

Reacting to the development, a former Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, said the PDP was one big family and that he would work with Obanikoro.

"We are party elders. If Obanikoro apologises, we will accept his apology. Our priority is winning Lagos," he said.

With a voting population of over six million, it is believed that the person who emerges as the winner of the presidential election next year would be largely determined by the outcome of the election in Lagos State.

Party sources told our correspondent that the need to win most of Lagos votes was what prompted the reconciliatory meeting.‎

60 Journalists Killed In 2014

No comments :

 Add BBN on 2BAFB965

At least 60 journalists around the world were killed in 2014 while on the job or because of their work, the Committee to Protect Journalists, CPJ, said Tuesday, making the past three years the deadliest for journalists since the organisation began keeping track more than two decades ago.

Syria was connected to two of the more horrifying killings of journalists this year, the beheadings by the Islamic State group of American freelancers, James Foley and Steven Sotloff. Both had disappeared while reporting on the conflict.
The conflict in Ukraine between the new government and Russian-backed separatists saw five journalists and two media workers killed. They were the first that the CPJ had recorded in Ukraine since 2001.
An "unusually high proportion," or about one-fourth, of journalists killed in 2014 were international ones, though the overwhelming number of journalists threatened continue to be local, the New York-based organization's report said.

Two journalists for The Associated Press, AP, and a freelance translator for the AP were among the CPJ's toll.
Those killed in 2014 include Anja Niedringhaus, an AP photographer, who was shot to death while covering elections in Afghanistan. AP video journalist Simone Camilli and freelance translator Ali Shehda Abu Afash were killed in an explosion at an ordnance dump in the Gaza strip in August.
In addition, AP photographer Franklin Reyes Marrero died in a car accident while returning from an assignment in Cuba. The CPJ does not count deaths from illness or car or plane crashes unless they were the result of "hostile action."
"2014 was a tragic year for journalists worldwide and for our organisation in particular," said John Daniszewski, vice president and senior managing editor for international news for the AP.
"While the casualties stemmed from war and conflict in different parts of the world, "they remind us of the daily courage and sacrifices made by professional journalists to bring back the news and information that so many rely on and take for granted."
The report said the number of journalists killed in 2014 was down from 70 the year before, but the past three years have been the deadliest since the organisation started compiling such records in 1992. Forty-four percent of the journalists killed were targeted for murder, the new report said.
The crushing conflict in Syria, now well into its fourth year, has been a major factor. The report said at least 17 journalists were killed there this year, with at least 79 killed since the fighting began in 2011.‎

Nollywood actors are Nigeria's greatest ambassadors -President Jonathan

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday described Nigerian actors and actresses as the greatest ambassadors of the country.

He said that players in the industry that is popularly known as Nollywood had consistently brought glory to the country.

Jonathan spoke while playing host to a group, Legends of Nollywood, led by Mr. Paul Obazele, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during which he was honoured with the award of Grand Patriarch of Nollywood.

He said, "There are so many good stories about you (Nollywood stars). For us who by divine providence and your own will, made us to be here this time, you are our pride, you are our stars.

"In fact, you are the greatest ambassadors of this country. This is because the Nollywood family has really helped to bring good image to this country.

"Before now, we were known for soccer. After sometime, we started fumbling. Today we are on top, the next day, we are down.

"Since Nollywood came on board, you have been quite steady and you have been bringing good image to this country."

Jonathan likened the Nollywood story to the biblical story of creation where God made a pronouncement that there should be light and there was light.

He said the industry was created from a humble beginning when people did not expect any spectacular thing and that it had grown to a very formidable body, being the second in the world.

The President expressed delight that the commercials of the industry had become an integral part of the nation's Gross Domestic Product.

He said he remained committed to giving government support to the industry.

While describing the award given to him as precious, he said the plaque would be one of the items in the presidential museum he would establish after leaving office.

While also agreeing with the group on the plan to establish a Hall of Fame for actors and actresses, Jonathan said he had mooted the idea as the Bayelsa State governor.

He said that his position then was that it was better to also establish a Hall of Shame alongside Hall of Fame.

He said the Hall of Shame would deter citizens from taking wrong steps like stealing, among other social vices.

Earlier, Obazele had said the group decided to give Jonathan the award because of the legendary support he had been giving the industry since his days as deputy governor of Bayelsa State.

"No government has shown special interest in our industry like yours," he told the President.

He has been putting in all efforts to make the party one through the bridge building visits to fellow party members with whom he contested the 4 December governorship primary in Lagos.

Ambode visited the speaker of the house of assembly, Rt.Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji in his office yesterday and the two discussed about how to ensure their party the APC wins in the state during next year's election.‎

Contrary to believe in some quarters that there are cracks within the party, BlackBox Nigeria has discovered that the guber candidate is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that all aggrieved members are pacified. Asides Ikuforiji, Ambode also met with the incumbent governor; Babatunde Raji Fashola last week while he is also expected to meet top stakeholders in the state as well as those who contested the ticket against him.

Long Overdue! Nigeria Army Jail 16 Soldiers Over Chibok Kidnap

The  Nigerian Army has sentenced three officers and 13 other soldiers to two years' imprisonment each   over the April 14, 2014   abduction of over 200 schoolchildren from their hostel in Chibok, Borno State, by Boko Haram insurgents.

The soldiers, including a Lieutenant   Colonel, a Captain and a Second lieutenant,   were arraigned before a General Military Court Martial at the Maxwell Khobe Military Cantonment, Rukuba in Jos, Plateau State, in October 2014.

The officers are Col. A. O. Ojo, Capt. O. O. Ogunrinde, and 2nd Lieutenant V.I. Godknows.

Although the trial started at the headquarters of the 3rd Armoured Division of the Army in Jos, the court was moved to Kaduna where the judgment was delivered on Tuesday.

The GCM panel convened by the General Officer Commanding I Division, Kaduna, Maj.Gen. K. C. Osuji, comprised Brig. Gen. Ogunlade (President); Col. J. O. Sokoya, Col. M. Kadiri, Col. M. W. Abubakar, Col. A. A. Bamgbose, Col. A. Garba and Col E.M . Albara

Our correspondent learnt on Tuesday that the panel concluded that the prosecution was able to prove the case against the soldiers.

But the Defence counsel to Col. Ojo, Mr. Shuaibu Isah, told our correspondent on the telephone that the judgment was a far cry from the evidence presented before the court.

Isah said he would appeal against the judgment   to the confirming authority, which is the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah.

He said, "We are not satisfied with the judgment of the court. We intend to file an appeal against this verdict before the confirming authorities…"

A source at the court said that Ojo was convicted on two counts of failing to reinforce Chibok when it came under Boko Haram attack on April 14 and for allegedly releasing information without verification to the Army authorities.

He said the "unverified information" caused   the Defence Headquarters to issue a 'false' statement on the release of the abducted girls.

The source added that Ojo, who was said to have resumed duty the day before the attack, had responded to the charge of failing to reinforce Chibok by explaining that he got the information on the Chibok attack at his location in Biu by 1a.m.

The Lt. Col. was also said to have explained that he had other operational issues such as his   inability to notify the nearby military formation in Damboa.

On the charge that he gave unverified information to the Army authorities, the officer said he never gave any figure on the "rescued or abducted girls."

It was gathered that the lawyers to     Godknows   told the court martial that their client, who was charged with cowardly behaviour, was at the Chibok location with 13 soldiers armed with AK 47 but with limited rounds of ammunition to confront over 200 heavily armed Boko Haram fighters.

Another source said that   Godknows left four men to defend the camp while he took nine others to confront the insurgents before pulling back due to their high number and overwhelming   fire power.

The charges against the soldiers which centred on failure to perform military duty carry a maximum of two years imprisonment.‎

The suspects include Taiwo, a 44-year-old engineer, who works in an automobile company in Barcelona; 25-year-old Charles, a hotel attendant in Lagos; Chidi, a 24- year-old student in Cyprus and Agomuo, a 44-year-old farmer in Imo State.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Commander at the Lagos airport, Mr. Umar Hamza, said: "Taiwo was found in possession of 525 grammes of cocaine and 1.540kg of heroin. He ingested 87 wraps and concealed others in his pants. He was on his way to Spain.

"Anikwe was intercepted with 570 grammes of methamphetamine concealed in his luggage handles on his way to Malaysia.
"Igwe was found with 750 grammes of cocaine hidden under his luggage, while Agomuo was caught with 2.750kg of heroin hidden inside a duty free bag inside his luggage, while returning from Pakistan.
"They are cooperating with our team of investigators and will be charged to court soon."
In his confessional statement, Taiwo who claimed to have been living in Spain for 14 years, said he was introduced into drug trafficking by a friend.
On his part, Charles said that a guest whom he was nice to promised to sponsor his education in Malaysia, only to hand him a bag which unknown to him, contained drugs.

Meanwhile, Chidi, who recently gained admission into one of the universities in Cyprus, said that he agreed to smuggle the drug for 5,000 pounds.
Agomuo blamed his predicament on hardship, saying "I am a farmer in Imo State. It had been very difficult for me to feed my wife and only child. One day, a friend invited me to Pakistan, promising to sponsor the trip, with a promise to help me secure a good job over there.
"When I got to Pakistan, he told me there was no job but that I should take drugs to Nigeria. He promised to give me half a million naira to start my business if I could take the drugs to Nigeria.
"Since life was becoming unbearable, I decided to take the risk. I was, however, not lucky because I was arrested at the Lagos airport."
