Members of the extremist group, Boko Haram, have launched a fresh offensive on Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, reports say.

The militants are pushing to enter the town, sources said.
Residents who were obviously caught unawares are said to be scrambling home to safety.
The Hausa service of the BBC reports that troops from the Nigerian army are presently engaging the attackers.
The reports say the attackers came through an area called "Cashew Plantain" which is behind Gina Barracks, the headquarters of the 7th Division of Nigerian army.

North Korea has reportedly executed its Defense Minister for falling asleep at a military event that was attended by the country's leader Kim Jong Un, Seoul's National Intelligence Service (NIS) told lawmakers in Seoul.
According to South Korean media on Wednesday, Hyon Yong Chol was charged with treason and executed on April 30 in front of a crowd of hundreds of North Korean officials, reports Reuters.
Hyon, who was chief of the country's People's Armed Forces, is also said to have talked back to the North Korean dictator several times.
The South Korean intelligence agency briefed a parliamentary committee about the execution on Wednesday.
Hyon's execution is the latest in a series of purges against senior officials in the isolated country. Last month, the NIS said Pyongyang had ordered the execution of 15 high-ranking officials for undermining Kim's leadership.

According to news gathered by BlackBox Nigeria, a top Burundian general moments ago (Wednesday,13th of May) announced the overthrow of President Pierre Nkurunziza as violent protests against the President's third-term bid continue.‎
In a radio broadcast, General Godefroid Niyombareh said that a national salvation committee had been set up to run the country.
The announcement came hours after President Nkurunziza arrived in neighboring Tanzania for talks by East African leaders to end the crisis.
General Niyombare was sacked from his position as the central African nation's powerful chief of intelligence in February.

Jonathan will take Buhari on a tour of the Presidential Villa, a day before the latter takes over as president.

The President-elect will also get his handover notes from the outgoing President on the same day.

A girl, Omasan, 21, allegedly murdered her younger brother, Laju, in Ugbuwangue, Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State, yesterday.
Laju, a student of Yonwuren College, was said to have bled to death from a stab to his chest by Omasan, following a disagreement over sharing of house chores.
Trouble started when Laju, the only male child of the family, insisted that he had already fetched water and was too tired to do any other chore.
A family source said in the fight that ensued, the boy reportedly brought Omasan down and ran away.
The sister dashed into the kitchen, grabbed a knife, pursued and stabbed Laju in the chest.
"He fell to the ground, screaming, and calling for help as neighbours rushed to his rescue," the source said.
The victim was confirmed dead at the Warri Central Hospital, where doctors revealed that he had lost too much blood.
Omasan's attempt to run away from her crime failed as she was caught and handed over to the police.
The family source added: "These kinds of fights and quarrels have been recurring in the home. They have always fought and settled, but this particular one just got out of hand."
At press time, Laju had been buried in front of his father's compound in the Itsekiri community in Warri.
Police Public Relations Officer in Delta State, Celestina Kalu, confirmed the teenager's death, adding that investigation into the case had commenced.

The sleepy town of Afugiri in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State has been thrown into confusion following the death of a 54-year-old blind prophet, Onyenonachi Agwu, his wife, two children and landlady.‎
Prophet Agwu, who was the founder and General Overseer of Faith Healing Tabernacle Ministry at Nkwoegwu, hailed from Umukabia area of Umuahia, but lived at Afugiri while his church was at Nkwoegwu.
He was believed to be full of divine powers as many people had reportedly received solutions to their problems through his prayers.
There have been different stories about what could be the cause of the deaths.
A version of the stories attributed their death to fume from a generator while another version suspected spiritual attack as the late cleric was said to have scheduled deliverance prayers for the sick children of his land lady on the night the incident occurred.
According to a family source, the deceased bodies were discovered in the morning by neighbours while their generator, which was bought about three days before the incident, was still running.
The source said that in addition human remains, two domestic fowls were also found dead at the bathroom of the four-bed room apartment.
According to the source, the corpses were found in different rooms in the four-bedroom bungalow, built recently.
The wife and daughter were found in one room, the prophet at the dining area, the landlady was found around the passage, close to the electricity generator while the three dead fowls were found around the bathroom.
There are also speculations that the deceased might have been attacked spiritually by the forces behind the sickness of the landlady's children, who the prophet was to pray for on the night of the tragedy.
The deceased were said to have eaten rice prepared in the house that night. The family source, however, dismissed food poisoning as a possible cause of the death, but said that the result of the autopsy would reveal the actual cause of the death.
Efforts to find out from the police whether the autopsy result was out did not yield any result as the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ezekiel Onyeke, did not pick several calls put across to his cell phone by our correspondent.
The family source told our correspondent, "Our major challenge now is how to raise money for the burial of the dead."
He appealed to government for financial assistance, lamenting that the late prophet was the only surviving child of his parents.

Fake prophets and pastors have continue to be on the rise.
Few days ago,a 35-year old gospel preacher, Lucky David, ran out of luck when he was arrested and charged before Ejigbo Magistrate's court.
The long arms of the law caught up with him after he allegedly stole a Lexus SUV while preaching about repentance to the residents of Idimu in the morning in Lagos State, western Nigeria.
The fake preacher reportedly carried a Bible and bell while preaching to the residents of Idimu-Ejigbo road in Idimu and asking them to repent of their bad ways.
When he got to the residence of Mrs. Stella Ogunfeitimi who had prepared to go to work that morning and saw that she left her car key in the ignition and went upstairs to collect what she forgot, David sneaked into the compound and drove the vehicle with registration number KRD 646 DD out of the compound.
When the victim got down and did not find the SUV, PM News gathered that she quickly contacted the police at Idimu Division who swiftly trailed David to Iyana Iba-LASU road and arrested him.
When he was taken with the vehicle to the station, David confessed that he actually came from Benin, the Edo State capital in southern Nigeria, to Lagos to steal vehicles.
He told the police that he had no fixed address and that he pretended to be preaching the gospel to deceive people in order accomplish his mission.
After police interrogated him, he was charged to court with stealing.
At the court, he told the presiding Magistrate, Mr Peter Nwaka, that he actually drove the vehicle out without the knowledge of the owner, but he did not steal it as claimed by the police.
David also said he did not know the owner of the vehicle prior to when he stole it.
After he pleaded not guilty to the charge, the magistrate ordered that before he could be granted bail, his surety must go to the Chief Registrar's office to facilitate the bail.
After listening to the accused and complainant, the matter was adjourned till 27 May for further hearing.

Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Tuesday denied media reports that her plan to host the 8th summit of the African First Ladies Peace Mission on Friday is designed to deny the wife of the President-elect, Hajia Aisha Buhari, the opportunity of becoming the President of the mission.‎
Mrs. Jonathan, who is the current President, had summoned a meeting of the mission during which new executive members are expected to emerge.
Media reports had it that the election would have been held in July but the President's wife brought it back to May to allow her successor to emerge before her husband will cease to be President from May 29.
But a statement by Mr. Ayo Adewuyi, on Tuesday said there was no truth in the reports.
Adewuyi explained that Mrs. Jonathan was elected President in July 2012 and was meant to serve for two years, according to the group's internal regulation.
He further said that while her tenure ought to have ended in 2014, when a fresh election should have held, the President's wife drew the attention of her colleagues to the then forthcoming election in Nigeria, which preparation would not enable her host the summit.
According to him, Mrs. Jonathan therefore proposed that the summit should hold after the general elections, and it was accordingly agreed that it should be held in July 2015.
Adewuyi however added that there was an understanding among members that if President Goodluck Jonathan did not succeed in his re-election bid, the President's wife would convene the summit in May to enable the election of a new President and ensure a smooth handover since her tenure has ended.
The statement read in part, "Arising from the above, it is therefore clear that this is not a personal matter nor specifically a Nigeria sole affair but a continental platform governed by its own rules and protocols just as similar international organisations.
"It would therefore be out of place for anyone to insinuate that it is intended to shut out the incoming First Lady. This cannot be farther from the truth.
"We state therefore without any iota of equivocation that it is mischievous for anyone to scheme to cause disaffection between the outgoing and incoming First Ladies, Dame Patience Jonathan, and Hajia Aisha Buhari.
"Let us therefore come together in our tradition of hospitality to heartily welcome our guests, the African First Ladies, as they arrive Abuja for the 8th Summit of the Mission.
"Let us always remember that the personal ambition of anybody is not worth destroying the image of the nation."

Pep Guardiola has praised his former protege Lionel Messi as the "best player of all time" and said he is thrilled that the Argentine is back to his best, despite the Barcelona star proving so decisive in Bayern Munich's elimination from the Champions League.
Messi did not score in the German side's 3-2 semifinal second leg win, but did play a brilliant through ball that set up Neymar's first to make it 1-1 and effectively kill the tie there and then.
"Messi is just incredible, really strong, really fast, back to his best just as when I used to train him," Guardiola gushed. "He is the best player of all time. I can compare him with Pele.
"I am very proud of the years we spent together."
Guardiola also said he was proud of his team, despite their ultimate 5-3 defeat on aggregate, insisting the second leg showed the balance they should have had in the first game of the tie.
"Luis Enrique does really good work. They do a good job. [Real] Madrid or Juve -- that will be a great final. Barcelona are very strong at the back, physically they are very strong and quick.
"The only way you can stop players like that front three, you have to force them to run more. When Barcelona have the ball, they are very strong, there is nothing you can do about that.
"In the Camp Nou we didn't play that well, we gave them this big chance. We have to have more presence in the penalty area, we had to get more balls in. Barcelona deserved to get into the final.
"I'm satisfied with the performance of my team... we needed this balance in the Camp Nou, didn't have it."
This season could be seen as a disappointment to some Bayern fans  -- they only won the Bundesliga this campaign, one year after winning the league, the DFB Pokal, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup. Guardiola, however, backed his players.
"I would like to congratulate my players, I am very proud of my players. I am very happy. I want to pay a big compliment to Barcelona. I hope in Berlin they can win their fifth Champions League," Guardiola said.
"We did everything we could. In the last season we won four titles, in this season one title. Normally when you play with many problems, lots of injuries, and the players attack and attack, not just today but the whole season in the Bundesliga, and the Cup."
Bayern captain Philipp Lahm added: "We all believed in the miracle. Unfortunately it did not work because we conceded an early equaliser.
"We gave everything we could. We did not lose the tie today, that much is obvious, but we lost it instead in the first leg."

Eden Hazard has been voted the 2015 Footballer of the Year by England's Football Writers' Association, just weeks after receiving a similar award from the country's Professional Footballers' Association.
The Chelsea midfielder had 53 percent of the vote while Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane was the runner-up, with Chelsea captain John Terry third.
