Football clubs in the Nigeria professional Football league have earned themselves the reputation of either paying its players "Starvation wage" or not even paying them at all.

After last weeks sage between Sharks Fc of Port Harcourt legendary Captain Odinga Odinga and the deputy Governor of Rivers state over unpaid wages, players of another P/harcourt based Club and Continental Ticket chasers Dolphins Fc have threaten to abandon their crucial home game against title contenders, Enyimba of Aba, if their salaries are not paid.

The League management Company(LMC) has responded to this spit of salary crisis bedeviling the league by issuing a "No pay, no play" rule ahead of next season, any team that does not pay up its outstanding salaries will not be register for the 2014/15 League season and also will not be allow to play in CAF club competitions.

It was also discovered that the chairman of the League Management Company(LMC) Hon. Nduka Irabor was quoted to have said "The direct effect of non compliance with such basic condition is now too obvious for all to see. The LMC will not budge on its demand for Financial Performance Guarantee in the new season, we will not allow clubs to carry-over their indebtedness to players into the coming season".

Nigeria have always had good laws over the years but implementation remains the bottleneck for us as a people, BBN will continue to canvass for the improvement of players welfare in the Nigeria Professional Football League.

Ikorodu For Lagos Governor Mass Rally, Youths Lament Absence Of Politicians

Ikorodu For Lagos Governor Mass Rally, Youths Lament Absence of Politicians

Following a mass rally organised by indigenes of Ikorodu to shore up support for the Ikorodu for Governor campaign,Youths in Ikorodu Division have bemoaned the absence of key political office holders and traditional rulers at the mass rally. A development they said is not good for the campaign to ensure Ikorodu gain the governorship ticket that is presumed to have been zoned to Lagos East, ahead of  Epe Division that shares the same senatorial district.

Some of the youths who shared their grievances through their social media handle said they are surprised at the sudden change of attitude by the politicians.

The Founder and Aministrator of Ikorodu Ambassadors, a nonpartisan socio-political group, Adedeji Fatuga, said he had to drop his support because he will not allow himself to be used for an hidden agenda.

“Here are my views,we all say Ikorodu for Governor, but why can't our political, religious, community leaders in Ikorodu division visit all the political parties secretariat, and tell them to produce an Ikorodu indigene for their flag bearers, that if APC does not produce, we shall all go to PDP that produces, and if LP doesn’t produce, we shall go to APGA that produces? Why can't all our leaders go to the print and electronic media to say all these things with their names mentioned? Why can't the Obas and chiefs lead the struggle and the Christian Association, the Muslim Community, Arewa and Igbo Community follows?” Fatuga wrote on his wall showing his annoyance with the way the campaign is being carried about.

Another youth activist who has been committed to empowering youths in the community, Aderoju Ladega said truly the mega rally took place on October 28, 2015; she was surprised that none of the political leader or political office holders was present. She attributed the politicians’ action as betrayal.

Abike Olasupo Allison in her own view said most of the aspirants from Ikorodu are not committed to the campaign and are only in the race to prepare themselves for possible appointments.

Adding his voice Adeleke Fasanya, prays that God should see the community through the present tribulation and humiliation from the bunch of shenanigans that are in the position of leadership in the community.

Showing his disapproval of the situation of things, Fatuga said, if people of Ikorodu division cannot mobilize themselves without going to Alausa, the people should just pray for another person from any division that will emerge and upgrade Lagos State generally. He stated that Ikorodu for Governor must not be a particular party affair.

However, one of the Governorship aspirants contesting under Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Babatunde Olalere Gbadamosi has said his absence at the rally was completely unavoidable. He noted that he went to Abuja to pick his nomination form at the National party Secretariat and his plane was delayed due to bad weather condition. He pledged that the community would see more of him soon.

Another prominent aspirant contesting from Ikorodu that was absent is Senator Ganiu Olarenwaju Solomon, GOS of All Progressives Congress. BlackBox Nigeria gathered that none of the political representatives either elected, selected or appointed where at the political rally which is the major concern of the youths.

The main contenders for the Lagos East slot from Epe Division are Akin Ambode and Obafemi Hamzat both in APC

Oyo state must pay pensioners – Socialist Party

Governor of Oyo State, Sen. Abiola Ajumob

The Oyo State Chapter of Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN) has said that it is a must for the Senator Abiola Ajumobi led government of Oyo State to pay the pensioners in the state. The political party condemned the continuous non-payment of pensions, gratuities and other benefits meant for the pensioners by the APC-led Oyo state government.

The party in a press statement signed by the Oyo State Secretary, Socialist Party of Nigeria (SPN), Bamigboye Abiodun and made available to BlackBox Nigeria, the party call on the leadership of both Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to jointly name a day for a 24-hour strike backed up with mass action in solidarity with the pensioners.

“We urge them to immediately commence serious mobilization of the rank and file workers and retirees for a struggle for unconditional  payment all outstanding pensions and gratuities as well as full implementation of the N18, 000 minimum wage for the entire workers in the state public civil service.

Since 2010 different categories of primary school retirees across the state have been groaning under a backlog of unpaid pension arrears.

Since 2010 different categories of primary school retirees across the state have been groaning under a backlog of unpaid pension arrears. These include those who are owed 20 months unpaid pension arrears (September, 2010-January, 2013) while other categories are those who are owed 19 and 9 months pension arrears (Septembers, 2010-December, 2012) and (September, 2010- June 2011) respectively. Also the gratuities of pensioners that retired from 2009 to 2011 are yet to be paid,” it stated in the press statement.

The party said the act of continuous denial and refusal of retirees of their entitlement by Oyo State government after they have committed the productive part of their lives to serving the state has made retirement to mean a sentence to poverty to many of the senior citizens.

It noted that it is disheartening that all this is happening to the senior citizens in the state where the political officer holders continue to enjoy jumbo pays and maintain their opulent lifestyle despite the purported lack of resources as the reason for nonpayment of pensions and non-implementation of national minimum wage in full.

SPN in the statement said it is ridiculous and laughable though not surprising because it further shows how insensitive successive governments in the state including the current APC-led administration have been to the needs of the poor working people in the state.

The role of Nigerian students in the continuity of democracy

The role of Nigerian students in the continuity of democracy

- Lanre Arogundade (NANS President, 1984)

I thank the students' union of Michael Otedola College of Primary Education (MOCPED) Epe Lagos State for inviting me to share my thought on the role of Nigerian students in the continuity of democracy.

Historically, Nigerian students have staged major interventions and played critical roles in some of the important struggles that have one way or the other shaped the destiny of this Nation. In the colonial era for example, Nigerian students as members and co-leaders of the West African Students Union (WASU), lined up behind the nationalists to demand independence for Nigeria and other countries in the sub-region.

In the immediate post-independence period in 1962, Nigerian students now organized under the umbrella of the National Union of Nigeria Students (NUNS), protested against the then proposed Anglo-Nigerian Defence Pact which would have made Nigeria a military satellite of its erstwhile colonial master - Britian.

By 1978 NUNS had to pick the gauntlet against the military regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo which had decided to commercialize education by introducing and increasing tuition fees in Nigerian Universities. That struggle is what is famously referred to as Ali-must-Go, since the then Federal Commissioner for Education was Colonel Ahmadu Alli, one of the recent chairmen of the PDP.

Under the civilian regime of Shehu Shagari, Nigerian students, now under the umbrella of National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) and armed with a NANS Charter of Demands, consistently protested mis-governance characterized by outright looting of the treasury as well as the imposition of anti-peoples austerity measures like the preceding Obasanjo regime.

The Buhari-Idiagbon coup of December 1983 marked the return of the era of prolonged military rule that spanned up to sixteen years. It was in the early period of the era that I was privileged to serve as NANS President and I could testify to the fact that the cumulative struggles of the period against corruption, anti- people capitalist policies including commercialization of education and health care, introduction of the Structural Adjustment Program (SAP), denial of the political right of the people, attacks on fundamental rights and press freedom, attacks on the right to independent students unionism, attacks on workers and trade union rights, the annulment of the June 12 elections, etc contributed to the eventual collapse of the military and the return of civil rule in 1999, hence the common refrain that Nigeria is now under a democracy.

Democracy however presupposes many things: that life would be much better for ordinary citizens especially as the country is abundantly endowed with vast natural and human resources; that the rights of students, workers etc would be respected; that ordinary working peoples would be able to come together, form political parties and contest for power without the encumbrance of costly registration fees and other obstacles designed to favour only the parties of the millionaires; that education and health care will be easily affordable; that there will be good roads and other public infrastructure etc.

You will agree with me that if we make an honest assessment of the state of the Nation since 1999, these vital ingredients of democracy are largely missing and in some instances Nigerians are actually worse off. Doctors and other health workers have repeatedly gone on strike making the same demand for adequate funding to enable accessible and affordable health care delivery system. Teachers have repeatedly gone on strike making the same demand for adequate funding to make education affordable and accessible to the poor; students, as was recently the case at LASU, OOU, OAU etc have staged protests and demonstrations against increase in fees; publicly owned institutions have been repeatedly privatized or commercialized and sold to private individuals or entities with the attendant increase in prices as it is happening to electricity and job losses; pensioners are repeatedly protesting and dying as a result of non-payment of their pensions, etc

The question then is whether we should be talking of continuity of democracy or the discontinuity of undemocratic rule. But whichever way one addresses the question, there can be no doubt, that students have a role to play in the struggle to end oppression and replace the rule of the minority rich with that of the majority poor.

It is in this context, for example, that questions have been raised about what has become of NANS in the recent period. Indeed as a former NANS President, I have been repeatedly bombarded by the media on this issue giving the absence of centralized coordination of the various struggles being waged on individual campuses in defence of the right to affordable education and independent students' unionism. I believe the answers which I have given will help address that question and speak further to the theme of this lecture.

Basically, it is to reiterate that though the much talked about degeneration of NANS is a reality, it should be properly situated in the prevailing social-political context and not presented as it is peculiarly unique.

I have therefore pointed out that what is happening in NANS is equally a reflection of the decline - ideological and political - in the mass movements particularly as it concerns the central labour organizations, the trade unions etc. Indeed, what you see in the society is a degeneration of values across the social strata particularly with the right wing shift in the orientation of the leaders just like that of the political class. Poverty reigns amidst abundant wealth as corruption becomes the defining feature of this epoch. On the other hand, the campus hardships occasioned by near total submission to IMF and World Bank policies of education commercialization pose objective threat to vibrant unionism.

If we therefore look back again, we would see that the NANS of our time in the mid-1980s was a NANS that was as radical as the mass and Labour movements not just in Nigeria but internationally that were witnessing left wing radical upswing in the defence of publicly funded social services. Put in another way it was an era of popular mass struggles, in South Africa, in Latin America etc. It was within this radical context that NANS under our leadership formed alliance with the NLC under Hassan Sumonu and jointly fought for right to independent unionism with ASUU, to cite few examples; the underlining principle being similarity of ideological socialist orientation - and political vision for change in the larger society.

Struggles boomed as the economy boomed during the economic upswing of the period that was occasioned by high petroleum prices in Nigeria. Even at that time however, the threats were emerging. Thus while our 11-day nationwide boycott of classes in May 1984 stopped the re-introduction or increase in tuition fees by the Buhari-Idiagbon regime, it and other actions could not prevent the eradication of the subsidized cafeteria feeding system under which a meal was a mere 50kobo (mark you not 50 Naira) across the campuses. Students were able to easily pay the dues with which their unions were run and for which the union leaders had to account through committees composed by the democratically elected students' representative councils.

So, it was also a period of transition to right wing economic and political ideology internationally and nationally with the collapse of the Soviet Union, which by the way had deviated from genuine socialism and was being bureaucratically run and the ascendancy of the international apostles of privatization and commercialization symbolised by Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan. In that dying era of public ownership and publicly subsidized education, mass organizations like the students unions that stood in opposition to neo-liberal policies came under vicious attacks from the state including the use of cultists against radical students' leaders. Only unionists that subscribe to the new right wing orientation would be tolerated. That was the sole purpose of post-students' crises panels like those of Abisoye and Akanbi that were set up by the Babangida regime and therefore essentially recommended the dismantling of the right to independent unionism. One of the long term effects is the NANS of nowadays that is not actually funded by the mass of the students or the unions but could be so rich as to be able to regularly hold conventions and meetings at Eagles square in Abuja and sometimes expensive hotels.

Against this background, you will agree with me that there is urgent need for the student movement to be rebuilt. One way to do this is for students to begin to organize from below to reclaim their unions and NANS from rightwing leaders. You as students, must from now on, begin to demand that your union leaders and NANS leaders defend your interests otherwise you kick them out. However if the mass movement, the trade unions, the NLC etc return to pro-people ideology and philosophy it would greatly help the process of re-building NANS and enhance the ability of Nigerian students to ensure the continuity of democracy or the discontinuity of undemocratic practises.

In the larger society, that would mean counter-posing to privatization and commercialization pro-people policies of public ownership of commanding heights of the economy to make available the resources needed for all round societal development. On campuses, that would mean supporting the fight for independent unionism and associated rights. It is laughable that students unions now call themselves governments but lack the basic ingredients of governance. In our time, we were simply unions but we run self governing but democratically accounting structures like the executive, the students representative council and the judicial council. So, for example, when the result of the presidential election was hotly disputed in the 1981/82 session in our university - the University of Ife (now OAU), it was the students union judicial council that heard the case through the candidates' ‘lawyers' drawn from the Law Faculty and eventually pronounced the winner. There was no interference whatsoever by the University authorities despite the palpable tension. Rarely can you find that these days.

In concluding therefore, the point should also be stressed that nothing about NANS should be held as sacrosanct. After all, it took the effort of radical students' organizations to form NANS as replacement for National Union of Students (NUNS) which the Obasanjo regime banned following the Ali-Must-Go protests led by the late Segun Okeowo. A united central union is always desirable but it must be one that genuinely represents the interest of its members. In other words, Nigerian students do not have to operate under a NANS that neither stands for nor defends their aspirations. While seeking change, two, three, four, five etc unions can always come together and offer alternative perspectives such as platforms like the Education Rights Campaign (ERC) is correctly doing.

I hope your union will be one of such that arms itself politically and ideologically and links the struggles on the campuses with that of the working masses and poor.

Thank you

VICTORY AT LAST! Burkina Faso President Bows Out In Shame

No comments :

Following the crisis that engulfed the West African country of Burkina Faso,  the president of the country, Blaise Compaore has stepped down after days of protests demanding his resignation. The demonstrators had been angered by Blaise Compaore's plan to run for a fifth term in office.

The news that President Compaore had stepped down after 27 years in office was first announced by an officer at the military headquarters in the capital, Ouagadougou on Friday.

"As of today, Compaore is no longer in power," Colonel Boureima Farta told thousands of protesters outside of the headquarters.

The announcement was met with cheers from the crowd who had been protesting to demand that the president step down immediately.
A few minutes later, the now former president released a statement confirming that he had resigned.

Renewed protests

Earlier on Friday, thousands of demonstrators were reported to be back on the streets of the capital, a day after thousands of people, including soldiers, took part in a demonstration which culminated with some storming the parliament building.

The military briefly imposed martial law in an effort to restore order, while at the same time saying it had dissolved parliament and would appoint an interim government, in which all major political parties would be represented.

Late on Thursday, the president again rejected the calls for his immediate resignation, saying he would remain in office for another year.

"With regard to myself, I am available to open talks on a transitional period at the end of which I will hand over power," Compaore said in the statement broadcast on BF1 TV.
The president also confirmed that he had abandoned an effort to amend the constitution in order to allow him to run for a fifth term in office - a plan that had angered many and sparked the street protests, which began on Tuesday.
Burkina Faso Army Chief of Staff, General Honore Traore

Compaore led Burkina Faso since taking power in a 1987 coup. He has been elected four times since then, but the opposition has disputed the results.

In Friday's statement, Compaore declared that Burkina Faso was currently in a "power vacuum" and he called for "free and transparent" elections within the next 90 days.

However, there are strong indications that the Army Chief of Staff, General Honore Traore, who according to Burkina Faso radio would make a national broadcast later today, might be the head of the Transition Government that would be set up.

There was strong indication this morning that APC Presidential Aspirant and Former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar might be considering an alternative platform to realize his political ambition.

Atiku who had already picked his nomination form under APC was rumored to be preparing his age-long political platform PDM as an alternative.

A source closed to Atiku' s campaign team said all though it is not certain yet, the acceptance the ambitions of General Muhammad Buhari and Rabiu Kwankaso enjoyed calls for concerns.

Our Abuja correspondent also noted that it was noticed that the posters of PDM was pasted all across Abuja  this morning.

Benfica Coach jorge Jesus on thursday Criticized the world Football Governing Body, FIFA for not naming him in the 10-man short-list for the manager of the year.

The Portuguese coach won everything on offer in Portugal for Benfica last season and also got to the Final of the UEFA Europa League last season. He was quoted at saying"I don't know the criteria used for this choice. If I did, I would have a better-informed opinion but I have noticed that there are some on the list who achieved less than I did.
"Some weren't in the finals of the Champions League or Europa League, some were not even (domestic) champions,"

It will be recalled that Jorge Jesus's fellow country man and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho didn't win a single trophy last season and he finds himself in the FIFA 10-man short-list for Coach of the Year.

I must confess lately i have become really attached to color RED...there's something about that color,
maybe its because it adds a very bold touch to one's look. Red was strictly for evening looks but now you can rock your red anytime anyday...a red bag, a red purse....red nail polish

A must have accessory is a 'red lipstick'. Everyone looks amazing wearing a red lipstick; all that matters is using the right shade and texture that makes you comfortable. Red lips are not restricted to evening looks though they look classy on red carpets and cocktail parties you can look fab in the day with a black and white stripped blouse a pair of ripped denim....beautiful.‎
Wearing red lipstick in the day is edgy and daring....you dont have to be careful in fashion but please be sensible sha......lool.

To get that pouty look for your instagram try wearing red lipstick...
The thing about naija babes is that they can do oversabi...too much of something is bad but they would do serious 'to match'...red shoes, red belt, red bag and even red beret sef...lmaoooo...na wa o. I know you are trying to be bold and all but please a touch of red is perfect.
I can feel deep down within me that i have inspired someone today....but extremely dark skinned ladies should be careful while choosing shades of red...
One quick question; do you think everyone looks amazing wearing red lipstick......
I love y'all but i love my red lipsticks more....*kisses*

President's Goodluck Ebele Jonatha's candidacy as the ruling party's consensus candidate might be facing fresh threats as two other people have chastised the party's decision to print only one presidential for.

Son of former Nigerian Prime minister, Dr. AbdulJelil Tafawa-Balewa have disclosed that the party needs to explain why the presidential form is unavailable for him to purchase. Tafawa Balewa disclosed recently that except the PDP is a communist party, it must come out to defend itself because Nigeria was in a democracy.

Another Presidential aspirant under the PDP, Mrs. Akasoba Duke-Abiola who is the Akasoba of Kalabari and Chairperson of the Akasoba Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ACPCR) has disclosed that it is a fight till finish until the PDP does the right thing.
It would be recalled that Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party had earlier adopted the president as their consensus candidate which is now being contested.

President Jonathan on Thursday picked the single Presidential ticket of the PDP which is now facing a controversial run.‎

More Nigerians have continued to react to the Thursday withdrawal of the Security details of the Speaker of the House Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal by the Inspector General of Police over the the Green Chamber's helmsman's defection to the opposition APC.

Speaking in Lagos, an aspirant for the state of Assembly Comrade Moshood Olanrewaju Aluko posited that the Nigerian Police in this show of crass partisanship and gross mis-use of power to favor the ruling PDP has further vindicated the APC's position that the President is highly undemocratic in nature.

While reacting to the statement credited to the spokesman of the Nigeria Police, Emmanuel Ojukwu that "In view of the recent defection by the Right Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal ... the Nigeria Police Force has redeployed its personnel attached to his office," Aluko stated that this development is a show of sheer recklessness on the part of the Nigerian Police who have decided to connive with the ruling PDP to truncate democracy in the country.

Also reacting to the withdrawal of the Speakers's security details the Chairman of the All Progressive Congress in Rivers State disclosed that "We wish to call on Nigerians to condemn this affront on the fourth citizen of our nation and insult on our representatives ... It is the constitutional right of Tambuwal to freely associate with any party of his choice."

Comrade Moshood Aluko (CAMO) who is seeking to represent Oshodi/Isolo Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly however disclosed that he was overwhelmed with the Speaker's decision to a part of glory by joining the APC. In his words Aluko said, "I am also using this opportunity to welcome an honorable man to the progressive path. I welcome the number four citizen of the nation to the midst of the progressives, I believe he has studied the caliber of people in our great party, studied the party's manifesto and discovered that PDP was a mistake but I thank GOD for Rt. Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal for discovering the right path, a party with a developmental agenda that will give Nigerians the desired CHANGE . I expect more defectors to our party soon because PDP is a sinking ship. I once again congratulate the honorable speaker for this great step in the right direction."

Comrade Aluko Moshood Olanrewaju (CAMO) is a Lagos politician and youth leader. If elected, he would be representing the people of Oshodi/Isolo Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly.
