Former Senator and ex Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, has declared his intention to contest for the Governorship election in 2015 under the platform of the Peoples' Democratic Party (P.D.P). He made this known at a declaration programme held at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

In his speech, Senator Obanikoro, while standing in front of a large overwhelming crowd emphasised that if voted in, his administration will be grounded on three main priorities which are; grassroot governance, simple solutions and education. Noting that education is the key where the poor and masses are empowered and educated, the chances of the state progressing is high.
"When you deliberately sideline the poor from getting educated, you are calling for a disaster, it is a disaster that you might not see next year or in two years but down the line that is exactly what you will have because you have shut out the majority in the people. But my own government will bring hope to the hopeless and ensure that we create an educational system that is affordable to all", he said.

He lamented on the lapses of the present administration focusing efforts on the developments of infrastructures in the areas harboring the rich, affluent and privileged where billions of naira is spent to link areas like Ozumba Mbadiwe Road with Falomo bridge, Lekki with Ikoyi and the likes, also making life difficult to live for the market women and traders when they are being denied of the market place.

He promised to invest greater resources on infrastructural development in the sub-urb areas and improve the standard of living of the masses.

According to him, "Today there is no way a struggling man in Lagos even the so called middle class can afford to buy a property in our state. This intervention we intend to do will ensure there is affordable housing in the true sense of it."

Senator Obanikoro, assured of a 'Greater Lagos' where small businesses are not multi taxed and harassed, hospitals are not flooded with malaria pat stating that 70% of sicknesses in hospitals are malaria diagnosed and will therefore work to ensure that malaria centres are created in the 20 local government areas of the state. Part of his agenda is also to resuscitate the effectiveness and efficiency of the local government chairmen as the state cannot be run by a single person but rather with the support of all. He further pointed out that with his wealth of experience as a grassroots politician he remains the right candidate that can flush out the hardship the APC had made the masses to experience by this present administration right from its inception. He therefore enjoined people to show their maximum support to help achieve his goals for the state, as he acknowledges that power comes from God and not a godfather anywhere.
In his address, the Chairman of the peoples' Democratic Party Southwest, Makanjuola Ogundipe, implored Lagosians to offer their support to enable the party to sweep away the functionality of the APC in the state come 2015.

Fuji Musician, Saheed Osupa and the Double Wahala Crooner, Oritse femi were at the event to entertain the supporters of the party.

Like a war scene, continuous gun report tore through the air in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos State on Tuesday afternoon.

As residents ran helter-skelter in the ensuing confusion, four youths were shot dead, while several others were wounded, as 20 vehicles were also vandalised on four streets, namely Kano, Ondo, Odunfa and Ibadan.

Our correspondent gathered that the crisis was the aftermath of a primary election conducted for two candidates of the All Progressives Congress ─ Oladele Adekanye (Lado) and Bashiru Oloto.

The two men were aspiring to get the APC ticket to represent the Lagos Mainland Constituency one in the 2015 elections.

Our correspondent learnt that the primary was won by Lado, a former council chairman.

PUNCH Metro gathered that immediately the results were announced, more than 100 hoodlums from Apapa Road, who wielded guns, among other weapons, trooped into the streets to create mayhem.

Our correspondent counted four damaged vehicles on Kano Street, three on Ibadan Street, seven on Odunfa Street and six on Ondo Street.

Those who were shot and cut with machetes were said to have been evacuated.

A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said one person was shot on Simpson Street, two died on Lagos Street, while one was killed on Ibadan Street.

He said, "The boys are from Apapa Road. They cannot be less than 100 because they were many and had double-barreled guns, cutlasses and others. They shot sporadically into the air and attacked people.

"Apart from the four persons that were shot dead, many more were seriously injured and were rushed to hospitals."

A trader on Kano Street, Tolulope Salaam, said the gang carted away all her wares which she estimated at N60, 000.

At the Kano junction, handsets and other products on display were reportedly carted away by the rampaging hoodlums.

When our correspondent visited Ibadan Street, where the primary election took place, he observed that the road was deserted.

A mechanic in the area, Musbau Agbogun, wondered how the security agencies could not repel the attack.

He said, "I have been seeing them patrolling the area. I also saw men of the Department of State Service and policemen from Denton division moving round. Despite that, innocent lives were wasted. If this can happen in the party primaries, what should we expect in the real election?"

A victim, Gideon Makinde, whose Toyota Camry was vandalised told PUNCH Metro that he parked his car by a side of the road.

A resident, Abdulhamed Kareem, explained that some of the hoodlums broke into his sister's supermarket, and took all the money in the drawer.

He showed our correspondent a commercial bus that was riddled with bullets.

He said, "The man inside the bus was hit by a bullet and has been rushed to a hospital," he added.

It was learnt that the same scenario almost played out during another APC primaries in the Ogudu area, but for the intervention of the police.

It was learnt that protesters in Ogudu were prevented from fomenting trouble during the primary.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said nobody died in the Ebute Meta incident.

He said, "There was a congress in the place this afternoon. When they finished and announced the result, some persons attempted to cause commotion.

"We were able to protect the materials and the officials, who were escorted out of the scene without any harm. One person was shot and he was taken to the hospital. There is no record of death."

He added that the election in the Ogudu area was peaceful and there was no shooting.

He said, "Election was held around a police station in Ogudu, and some people came from Oworonshoki and started chanting protest songs. They were asked to leave."

The APC spokesperson for Lagos State, Joe Igbokwe, told PUNCH Metro he was not aware of any mayhem.‎

Three South Africa-based Nigerians, among them a mother of seven, have been arrested by operatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, with drugs suspected to be methamphetamine, with an estimated street value at N374 million.

Also arrested was a 44-year-old Asaba-based music producer, whose alleged attempt to smuggle 4.95kg of substance suspected to be cocaine into the country was foiled.
The suspects, who were arrested at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos, allegedly concealed the substance in security lamps, silicon sealants and foodstuff.
The NDLEA airport Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar, said: "Those apprehended are Chukwuenyem, 48 years old, with 21.695kg of methamphetamine hidden inside his bag; Kelvin, 37, caught with 9.980kg of methamphetamine hidden inside solar security lamps; Deborah, 40, found with 5kg of methamphetamine hidden inside foodstuff and Michael, 44, with 4.95kg of cocaine hidden inside silicon sealants.
"Apart from Michael, who was coming from Sao Paulo, Brazil, with 4.95kg of cocaine, the other three suspects were trying to smuggle methamphetamine to South Africa where they reside."

Suspects' stories
During interrogation, Chukwuenyem, a father of three, said he was lured into drug trafficking on his birthday.
According to him, "I struggled to feed my family by selling foodstuff. At present, my capital is so small that the business is near moribund. A friend met me on my birthday and introduced me into drug trafficking.
"He promised to pay me 15,000 South African Rand. My children are out of school because of my inability to pay tuition fee. This is my first time of dealing in drugs and I regret everything. I pray to be out of this problem."

On his part, 37-year-old Kelvin, also blamed his indulgence on his poor living condition back in South Africa.
He said: "I reside in South Africa where I import and export phones and clothes. I have five children from three women. My business is grounded and I now live from hand to mouth.
"A friend in South Africa gave me the solar lamp where the drug was found. He used to assist me financially and he also promised to pay my children's school fees."

Deborah, the mother of seven, said she was given the drugs by a man she sought financial assistance from.
According to her, "I have seven children and I take care of them from the sales of foodstuff. I came to Nigeria to buy foodstuff such as melon, vegetables and other local spices.
"There is a man in South Africa that I went to request for financial assistance to enable me expand my business. He told me that somebody would give me some food items for him.
"When I got to the airport, NDLEA officers detected methamphetamine in the package given to me by the man. This was how I found myself in this situation."

Michael, who was on his way from Brazil also claimed he was given a bag in Brazil without the slightest inkling of its content.
He said: "I am a music producer. I travelled to Brazil to promote my music label and to partner other producers. I had a successful deal but on my way back, I accepted a bag from a friend I met in Sao Paulo to take to Nigeria.
"When I got here, NDLEA demanded to search and 29 out of the 34 sealants were found to contain cocaine. This is a major setback for my career and I feel very bad."‎
