AU, ECOWAS Say Elections Free, Fair

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Election Observation Missions of the African Union, AU and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS have expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the Nigerian Presidential and the National Assembly elections.

The bodies called on the Presidential candidates to accept the outcome of the result.‎
At a joint press briefing in Abuja, the Missions said the general election met the criteria of being free and transparent.

ECOWAS Director of Political Affairs, Dr Remi Ajibewa while presenting his team's preliminary declaration said "despite the pockets of incidents and logistical challenges, the ECOWAS Observation Mission is persuaded that the general election of March 28, 2015 meets the criteria of being free and transparent".

He said the team was impressed by the level of disciplines showed by the electorates.
"It also commends the enthusiasm, maturity, patience and sense of civic responsibility demonstrated by the electorate and hopes that the same spirit of respect for order and discipline will characterise the rest of the electoral process".

The African Union Election Observer Mission led by former President of Liberia, Amos Sawyer said that the Mission was encouraging all political parties which might have grievances to resort to legal channels that are available for such purposes.

He said the AU team visited 319 polling units and that "the outcome of the elections showed that 100% of the PVCs were authenticated while 59% did not authenticate the fingerprints.

Pointing out other challenges, Dr Ajibewa said, ECOWAS Observers also noted that Electoral materials and INEC officials arrived late in many polling stations across the country leading to a delay in accreditation and voting processes.
"As a result, patience and discipline earlier displayed by voters were over-stretched leading to tension and disorderliness in some polling stations he explained.

ECOWAS Mission further said "Cases of attempt to snatch ballot papers were reported in some polling stations leading to instances of uproar, shootings and sporadic violence in the affected polling stations".
Acknowledging these short falls, "INEC issued a Communique authorizing manual accreditation of voters in the affected polling units and extended polling by one day in the instances where accreditation was suspended", he concluded.

ECOWAS however applauded the efforts of INEC towards ensuring peaceful organization and conduct of polls and the gains made by the Nigerian Military in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency

SEVEN ladies who  went for night vigil for deliverance in a new generation church, located at 2nd Cemetery Road, Benin-City, were allegedly raped by armed bandits who stormed the church at about 4am on Thursday.
The robbers were said to have earlier raided a  building near Ewuotubu community where they robbed some tenants living in four different flats in the compound. It was learnt  that two persons, including a police officer, were shot dead while others sustained various degrees of injuries in the process.
What was supposed to be an all-night marathon prayer session , tagged 'Koboko Night', meant to cast out demons tormenting some members of the  church, turned sour as the masked armed robbers, numbering six, shot sporadically, ordering the members to go back to the church shortly after they said the final prayers to depart the church.
The robbers had, on storming the church premises, rained bullets on the roof and ordered members to lie down. Consequently, they  raped the women.
One of the victims, who narrated her ordeal to Sunday Vanguard, said, "Though I was not raped, I was beaten mercilessly when they were asking us to identify the pastor and we refused. After collecting our phones, money and jewelleries, they ordered some of the ladies to undress. They threatened to kill them if they refused and, of course, they removed their clothes and were raped one by one.
"It was actually two churches that they attacked. They raped five women in our church. Later, we found out that they raped two others in a church close to ours. They ransacked the church and collected any cash they found and escaped. It was a horrible sight".
The raped women are said to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital on Ekenwan Road, Benin City.

Pregnant Woman Kills Husband For Supporting President Jonathan

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old pregnant woman who allegedly stabbed her husband to death during a quarrel over who would emerge winner between the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress, APC presidential candidates, while voting was on-going , weekend, at Ejigbo area of the state.

The incident, which threw the densely populated area into disarray, occurred at about 12noon inside the couple's one room apartment at 81 Military zone junction.
There were different accounts on how tragedy struck. A version of the account said the couple had divergent views on their choice of presidential candidates. While the husband was said to have decided to vote for the PDP, his wife, simply called Onyiyechi, reportedly chose to vote for the presidential candidate of the APC. An argument which degenerated into a fight over whose choice would hold sway reportedly ensued between them.
In the process, Onyiyechi allegedly stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife in the chest region.
Another version said the deceased, whose identity could not be immediately ascertained, told his pregnant wife to take the okro she was grating inside the room, to the veranda which also served as kitchen , an instruction she reportedly disobeyed, following which an argument which led to a fight occurred.

When Vanguard visited the scene of the incident yesterday, the couple's apartment was under lock . Their neighbours however described the suspect as an amicable person who had never quarreled with anyone since she moved into the building.
One of the tenants who spoke on condition of anonymity told Vanguard that they did not witness how the suspect allegedly stabbed her husband.
But he explained that : " We were all outside waiting to vote when Onyiyechi rushed out, shouting for help. Out of curiosity, we all ran inside, only to discover blood all over the ground, on entering their apartment.
"On closer observation, we noticed that the blood was from her husband chest region. We met him on the ground. Before we could rush him to the hospital, he gave up the ghost.
Perhaps, he would have survived the attack had Onyiyechi called for help early. From all indication, it was clear that she attempted to manage the situation immediately the incident occurred. It was when she discovered that the situation had overwhelmed her that she raised alarm.
"I do not know the name of her husband. We only know that of his wife, who we fondly call Onyiyechi. The irony of this matter is that she is not cantankerous.
"She has never beaten a little child, let alone to fight with any neighbor. Again on that day, we saw both of them together. They were seen sitting outside, one hour before the incident occurred. Policemen from Ejigbo later came to remove the corpse to the Isolo morgue".

Be Calm -President Jonathan Urges Nigerians To Await INEC Pronouncement

No comments :

President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to exercise patience as they wait for the Independent National Electoral Commission to collate and announce results of Saturday's Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Jonathan who is the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the election made the call in a post on his Facebook page.

Anxiety has been gripping Nigerians over what many saw as the slow pace of collating the results across the country with political parties making claims and counter-claims.

The All Progressives Congress had issued a statement on Sunday, alleging that the Jonathan administration was planning to manipulate the results. The claim had been faulted by the PDP.

Jonathan, however, advised Nigerians to wait patiently for the results the same way they waited to vote on Saturday.

He urged them not to embark on any acts that could lead to breakdown of law and order.

The President wrote, "We waited patiently to vote in these elections, now I want to urge all Nigerians to also wait patiently for the Independent National Electoral Commission to collate and announce results.

"We must ensure that we do not get involved in acts that breach our peaceful co-existence that we patriotically demonstrated during the elections.

"May God bless Nigeria."

INEC Officials Attacked In Ondo, Result Sheets Snatched

The result sheets for the Ilaje Local Government for both the House of Representatives and Senatorial elections were snatched by some hoodlums on Sunday evening.
Reports said workers of the Independent National Electoral Commission, who were on their way from the local government to submit the results at the collation centre at Okitipupa were also attacked by the hoodlums who made away with the result sheets.‎
The Returning Officer for the Ondo South Senatorial District election, Prof. Yomi Alfred, confirmed the incident to our correspondent, describing it as a huge setback.
He said, "We were expecting the result to arrive with high expectation but got information that the prepared document they were bringing to us was snatched by some hoodlums. We are downcast about this development.
"I don't know the decision INEC will take on this. We have made some collations from the other five local governments in the state. INEC will decide on what to do about the issue. By what we found out, on the average, there were over 20,000 votes between the candidate who is leading and the one that follows. If the number of registered voters in Ilaje LG does not exceed the 20,000, INEC may go ahead and declare the winner. But the decision is for INEC to take."

Findings showed that the missing result may hamper the declaration of a winner for the Ondo South senatorial and the Ese Odo/Ilaje federal constituency seats.
Calls made to the mobile phone of the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Olusegun Agbaje, for reaction were not picked as at the time of filing this report

Meanwhile, the Returning Officer for the Okitipupa/Irele federal constituency election, Dr. S. Oluyamo, has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Omogbehin Michael, as the winner of the Okitipupa/Irele federal constituency, having polled 30,176 votes, as against the 25,841 by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Akinmoyero Victor.
