Obafemi Awolowo: Living The Legacies...a 28th anniversary tribute

Today marks exactly Twenty-Eight Years, Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, who is arguably Nigeria's foremost nationalist departed to the great beyond. He died on May 9, 1987. Awo as he was and is still fondly called by his followers was a Nigerian politician and leader, a Yoruba Chief, and native of Ikenne in the Ogun State born March 6, 1909.
Awo was an active journalist and trade unionist as a young man who start out as a regional political leader in the old Western Nigeria. He was a founding father of Nigeria and many organizations, like the Egbe Omo Oduduwa, the Trade Unions Congress of Nigeria and the Action Group political party.
He was a lawyer by training and one of the Nigerian delegation to the Constitutional conference that took place in Great britain in 1957. He was the first Premier of the Western Region under Nigeria's parliamentary system from 1954 to 1960, and was the official Leader of the Opposition in the Federal parliament to the Balewa government from 1960 to 1963.
Chief Awolowo was a leader who believed that the state should channel Nigeria's resources into education and state-led infrastructure development. Controversially, and at considerable expense, he introduced free primary education for all in the Western Region, established the first television service in Africa in 1959, and expanded electrification projects in the region using proceeds from the highly lucrative cocoa export industry.
While giving a speech to Western leaders of thought in Ibadan, on May 1, 1967, Awolowo said the aim of a leader should be the welfare of the people whom he leads. Awo was extremely popular among the Yorubas in western Nigeria, his left-leaning but superior politics made him unpopular with the nation's (supposedly) largest political bloc—the northern Muslim, Northern People's Congress (NPC), which many Nigerians believed were being directed by the British government. Unlike Nnamdi Akikwe of the NCNC who became Nigeria's first President in 1963, Awolowo favoured autonomy based on "ethnolinguistic" identity.
He was imprisoned in 1963 on a charge of sedition, but pardoned and freed by the military government in 1967. Where hence he was made Minister of Finance from 1967 until 1971. During his time as the Federal Commissioner of Finance under the Military Government of General Yakubu Gowon, Awo can be credited with coining the name "Naira" for Nigeria 's currency (formerly known as the Nigerian Pound).
He unsuccessfully made efforts to lead the country in 1979 and 1983 when he contested a presidential candidate under Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). Despite his loss, Free Health care and and the widely acclaimed free Education were carried out through out all the states controlled by his party, the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN).
Today, he is remembered by many Nigerians and non-Nigerians as the best Nigerian president that never ruled. Aside pioneering Free Education in the country, Chief Awolowo can be remembered for building the first stadium in west Africa; Liberty Statium in Ibadan, first television station in Africa; WNTV(now NTA) and for running the best civil service in Africa at the time (in the Western Region).
Awolowo was an accomplished author with insightful publications on the political structure and future prospects of Nigeria. Amongst which are; Path to Nigerian Freedom(London, 1947), Thoughts on the Nigerian Constitution (Lagos 1966), The People's Republic (Ibadan, 1968), The Strategy and Tactics of the People's Republic of Nigeria (London, 1970), Path To Nigeria's Greatness etc.

Ghen Ghen! Patience Ozokwor, Onyeka At War...fight gets messier

The President Goodluck Jonathan 2015 presidential campaign has left a lot of bad blood in its wake; turning sisters against sisters and causing erstwhile good friends to be at daggers drawn. One of the irreconcilable differences brought about by Jonathan's recent bid for the presidency is the brawl between the singer, broadcaster, actor and Director General, National Women Centre, Onyeka Onwenu and popular actor, Patience Ozokwor. Onwenu had made it her business to have a majority of the creative population in Nigeria channel their request to see Jonathan and/or participate in his campaign. For an actor or musician to go around Onwenu to see Jonathan, his/her connection in Aso Rock Villa had to be very strong. So Onyeka was allegedly miffed when Ozokwor managed to get attention from Aso Rock on her steam. Try as she did to issue an order that Ozokwor should revert to her, it just didn't work. Ozokwor must have summoned extraneous powers from the 'evil' role she frequently plays in Nollywood to keep Onyeka off her track.

The fracas between the two Igbo women was not unconnected with who should control disbursement of the Jonathan campaign fund to a group of certain artistes. At one of the meetings, the centre just couldn't hold any more and things fell apart. Onwenu and Ozokwor allegedly openly abused themselves and called each other names. It took the intervention of Dame Patience Jonathan to calm the fighting women. They simply respected her but have continued to trade tirade at every opportunity.

Etcetera Again! Dangote Cannot Afford To Buy Arsenal Football Club

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Sonorous singer turned writer who has continue to cut an image for himself over his controversial articles which hit the high and mighty quite below the belt has returned with this one targeted at Africa's Richest man, Aliko Dangote over his reported interest to purchase London giant, Arsenal FC.
Read below...
You have sold some shares and you've got some money to spend. Now you want the ultimate: Your own football club. Hold on there, are you sure? Football clubs are a nightmare to run. In fact, almost two-thirds of premiership clubs have been in receivership at some point. Remember Portsmouth FC ploughed through four owners some seasons back and landed itself a debt of £60m and relegation in the Championship. Think of Leeds United's tragicomic collapse; the balls-up at Cambridge United; Rotherham going into receivership in 2006 and 2008; Southampton's sorry saga. And, of course, Crawley Town getting a winding up order years back. So, what do we know? Don't buy a football club for the glory. So, before Dangote aspires to join Abrahamovic, Glazers and Al Mansours, he should make sure he knows his stuff.
But does Dangote know how much these football clubs really cost?
It is often mistaken that these clubs go for a quid. For instance, Swansea City was bought by investors for £100, and sold four years later for a £1. But beware: underneath those figures lies a pile of debt.‎
Does Dangote have the cash, can he do an Abramovich?
No, he can't. New UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations already in place, require clubs to balance their income and expenses. Dangote cannot operate under such rules. The premiership is too organised and transparent for any businessman to easily manipulate. The wage structure of footballers is too large for a businessman like Dangote to take on. Let us forget that those goons at Forbes have told us that Dangote is Africa's richest man. As it stands, he cannot afford the outright purchase of a big football club like Arsenal. It is as simple as that. He will go broke. It is a possibility if we are talking about a club in the coast of West Africa. Dangote has most of his wealth in shares and physical assets and the football business requires liquid cash to sustain. Have we all forgotten that the same Dangote got a 3G licence and sold it to Etisalat? He is a very smart businessman who knows how to pick his areas of investments.‎
Can he get Bank backing?
Unlikely! No serious private equity firm would get involved with a football club. They are not proper businesses. Too much politics, too many egos. And there's no proper exit route – the history of football clubs on the stock market is chequered, to say the least. They are rich men's toys, great for entertaining your mates, and that's about it. I don't think Dangote can afford such an expensive toy.
A lot of people think it is relatively easy to make a million pounds by being the owner of a football club. That all you have to do is put in that first two million pounds. But these people should also know that since the English Premier League was formed in 1992, football finances have dried up to the extent that making a million pound profit is no longer a walk in the park. It is also the case that buying a football club is unlikely to yield that much of a return. Despite the significant TV and other commercial revenues, football clubs in England's top flight still struggle to break even. This is ironic, given the goal of setting up the Premier League was to stabilise club finances.
Is Dangote putting his heart over his head?
Yes I think so. Simon Jordan, in his autobiography, tells the story of how owning a football club can go terribly wrong. Jordan amassed a fortune of £75m in the early days of the mobile phone revolution. In 2000, he paid £10m to take control of South London football team Crystal Palace, becoming the youngest football club chairman at the age of 32. He was warned by many not to do it, but having watched the club since his childhood, he could not resist. Fast-forward 10 years and the club was in administration and Jordan's personal wealth largely wiped out. It is reported that Roman Abramovich, the Russian owner of Chelsea, has written off more than one billion pounds he ploughed into the club since acquiring it in 2003. Catching him up fast is Sheikh Mansour from Abu Dhabi, who has invested close to one billion pounds in Manchester City since 2008. Can Dangote write off such a huge amount of money? It is in fact the amount of money he borrows to invest in businesses. But again, I think Dangote is just trying to hype himself. Most of the serious money flowing into football recently has come from the Middle East. The Qatar Investment Authority (the country's sovereign wealth fund) bought the French Ligue 1 side Paris St Germain in 2011 and has gone about transforming them in the same way Sheikh Mansour has Manchester City. Forget those guys at Forbes, Dangote is not in the same league as these guys.
The Glazer Family bought Manchester United in 2006, recognising the immense value of its global brand as a cash generator and the opportunities to enhance it even further. The cost of buying the club was loaded on to the club itself, with the revenues it generates used to pay the debt and interest that the Glazers undertook to buy the club. Eventually, the hope is that the club will essentially pay for itself leaving its American owners in possession of a multi-billion pound asset but till date, the Glazers are still gnashing their teeth and are still neck deep in debt. When it was speculated that a Middle East consortium was willing to pay £1.5bn for Arsenal Football Club, it was stated that Stan Kroenke, the American who owns about 63 per cent of the shares in the club, would have made just £400m on his shares. So, given the appalling financial returns, why do people buy football clubs?

Who can buy Arsenal football club?
Anyone can buy Arsenal football club, but that anyone doesn't include anyone who obtains bank loans to fund a business. Sir John Madejski, chairman of Reading Football Club, describes the ideal football club owner as having deep pockets, mercurial, and not faint-hearted.

Etcetera seems quite on point on this one though!

Gobe! Miss Zimbabwe To Be Stripped Off Her Crown Over Leaked N~des...

No comments :

Miss World Zimbabwe Emily Kachote could be stripped of her crown should allegations about her purported appearance in leaked n~de photographs prove to be true, the pageant organizer said Tuesday. Photos supposedly showing the newly crowned pageant queen drunk and n»ked surfaced on social media over the weekend. Kachote's ex-boyfriend claimed he took the pictures, the Chronicle newspaper in Bulawayo said.‎
The Miss Zimbabwe Trust said it would not dethrone the reigning queen without an investigation. But if the allegations are true, then the pageant organizer would have to revoke her crown. "When we sit down with Emily to get her side of the story and if our investigations find that this is true, then we've no option but to dethrone her and replace her with the first princess Anne-Grace [Mutambu]," the Chronicle quoted trust representative Tendai Chirau as saying.
Competitors in the Miss World Zimbabwe pageant had signed statements saying they had never posed n~de for a photo, the Herald daily newspaper in Harare reported. "When the girls toured the country's provinces, we told them that if they had posed n~de anywhere, they were not supposed to participate in the pageant, and those who qualified for the finals assured us that they do not have any n~de pictures anywhere," Chirau said at a press conference Monday.
Kachote, a 25-year-old financial adviser, had little to say in an interview with the Herald newspaper. "I don't know what this is all about. That is all I can say for now," she said.
However, the pageant queen apparently told the local tabloid H-Metro she was aware of the n~de photos and that she had hoped her ex-boyfriend deleted them, the South African online news site News24 reported. "I was hoping the pictures would have been deleted by now since it happened a long time ago and I last spoke to the guy a year ago and I no longer have anything to do with [him] since what we had ended a long time ago," Kachote was quoted as saying. "I have always suspected that those pictures would circulate, but it happened a long time ago, and I believe my past does not determine where I am going."
This is not the first time a Miss Zimbabwe pageant queen has been ensnarled by claims of n~de photos. Last year's winning contestant, Thabiso Phiri, resigned amid allegations of leaked nude pictures even though the claims were never proven true. "Thabiso Phiri was not dethroned, she resigned, and the reasons why she decided to resign were best known to her and up to now we do not know why she resigned," Chirau said at the press conference this week. "We never saw the pictures, and even now if you go on [the] Internet, you will find Photoshopped pictures, not original pictures."

Fifty Shades Darker movie will premiere in February 2017 but fans of Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are eager to see them on screen as billionaire Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele.
There are rumours that the character of the billionaire entrepreneur Christian will turn dark in the upcoming movie, as his past secrets start unfolding before his love Anastasia.
The sequel of the erotic movie will largely be a thriller instead of a racy love story and this was confirmed by Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Pictures.
The movie will also introduce the notorious character of Mrs Robinson, who is responsible for introducing a young Christian to the infamous world of dominant and submissive relationships.
The naive college student will also have to deal with Christian's former submissives who are stalking her.
In EL James' best selling erotic novel trilogy, Ana learns that Elena Lincoln aka Mrs Robinson seduced her boyfriend when he was just 15 years old. Disgusted, she asks him to cut all ties with his mother's friend.
The filming for the second sequel in the erotic trilogy is yet to begin, mostly due to the absence of a director as Sam Taylor-Johnson has left the blockbuster franchise after directing the first movie.
Fans raved about Fifty Shades Of Grey, but critics thrashed it for the lack of a crisp story and sexual chemistry between the lead characters.
Universal Pictures has recently hired Niall Leonard, husband of author EL James, to write the script for the second part of the BDSM-themed movie series but there is no word from the producers about the director.

SA Man Gangr»ped By Three Women Who Took His Sperm

A South African man has reported how he was kidnapped and raped by three women in Cape Town. The 33 year old man, whose identity is being kept away from the media, said the women had stopped him in their car to ask for directions and as he was talking to them, one of the women brought out a gun, and forced him into the back of their black BMW and drove away.‎
He said they drove him to an unknown place far from where they kidnapped him, then they began touching him to get aroused. When he didn't, because the only thing he said he felt then was fear, the women forced him to drink an 'unknown substance' from a bottle to make him hard.
He said all three women then took turns on him and when he came, they took his semen in plastic bags, placing them in a cooler box. When they were done with him, they kicked him out of the car around Kwazakhele township, Port Elizabeth, and made off with his sperm.
The man reported the incident to the police who are now investigating. A South Africa police officer told local reporters what happened: 'As he was busy pointing out the directions, one lady came out and pointed a gun at him and forced him into the car. They drove into a thoroughfare 500km away. They parked the car and fondled him to get an erection but his penis could not get erect.
'They then forced him to drink an unknown substance from a bottle. This got him aroused quickly even though he was still scared and didn't want to have sex.
'This is really confusing to us because we have never heard of such a thing before. The man was fully conscious throughout his ordeal and he is still traumatised.'

Jose Mourinho Said Gerrard Made Him A "Better Manager"

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho says Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard made him a "better manager", ahead of their final Premier League meeting on Sunday.‎
The champions host the Reds in one the 34-year-old's final matches for the Anfield club.
"My dear enemy, he has made me a better manager because to stop him has been very difficult," Mourinho said, adding that he tried to sign him three times.
"I am very sad this is the last time I will face him."

Gerrard almost signed for Chelsea during Mourinho's first spell in charge of the Blues in 2005, and the Portuguese revealed he also wanted him at Inter Milan and Real Madrid.
He said of the LA Galaxy-bound player: "It's too late to sign him. He can't play against Liverpool. He's done an amazing career with his people. He refused to play in other big clubs, other big leagues, to play only for Liverpool and this is a feeling that stays together.
Jose Mourinho says he would have successfully paired Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard if the latter had signed for Chelsea
"Who knows if I'll play against Steven as a Liverpool manager some day?"

If he had convinced Gerrard to join the Blues, Mourinho said he would have successfully paired the midfielder with Frank Lampard - something successive England managers were accused of failing to do.
"I always thought that both were the best two number eights in Europe," he said.
"In my opinion and my vision with them you don't play a number 10, you play with one number six and give the freedom to the two number eights because they score more goals than any number 10.
"So Lampard with 30 goals a season from midfield and Gerrard with 25, they score more goals together than a No 10 and the striker."
Gerrard was in the Liverpool team that defeated Chelsea in the 2005 Champions League semi-final, and then went on to lift the trophy.

However, his connection with the London club will also be remembered for the mistake which led to Demba Ba's goal in the 2-0 win for the Blues at Anfield last season. The defeat cost Liverpool the advantage in the race for the Premier League title, eventually won by Manchester City.

"Messi is the best world club player of all time"

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher believes that Lionel Messi has proven himself the best club player of all time.‎
The Argentine is the talk of the football world once again, after a stunning two-goal salvo in Barcelona's 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at Camp Nou on Wednesday.
Numerous ex-players were quick to argue that the four-time Ballon d'Or winner's stunning performance offered conclusive proof that the diminutive No.10 deserves to be recognised as the finest talent the game has ever seen.
Carragher feels that an argument could still be made that Messi needs to lift the World Cup to be ranked No.1 but the former England international is in no doubt that the 27-year-old has surpassed all others at club level.
"His achievements over the last decade have been so breathtaking that you could say he has outstripped those who have gone before — and it is quite possible we will never see them bettered," he wrote in The Daily Mail
"The men with whom we are comparing him are gods — Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff, Franz Beckenbauer and Alfredo di Stefano. Pele doesn't enter the debate. He won 10 league titles and two Copa Libertadores with Santos but I feel European competition has always been more competitive.
"It gets said that the standards in La Liga are not taxing for him and Cristiano Ronaldo but look at Messi's record in the Champions League: he now has an astonishing 77 goals — two of which defined finals against Manchester United in Rome (2009) and at Wembley (2011) — in just 97 games. His consistency is remarkable.
"He has taken Barcelona to heights they had never known. During his time, they have turned one European Cup into four with the promise of a fifth in Berlin next month. They have also dominated Spanish football and a sixth league title in 10 years is within their grasp.
"I understand the game is now not as physical as it used to be in the days of Maradona and Cruyff but they never had to endure the scrutiny and exposure that comes with today's game, the constant analysis of performances and the pressure to produce results, which Messi has to deal with ...
"The job of facing the 27-year-old, who is now scoring 50 or 60 goals a season from his free role, however, is now the most difficult in football, as the unfortunate Jerome Boateng found out to his cost on Wednesday.
"Quite simply, Messi has been the greatest player in the best club team we have ever seen."

Messi's double against Bayern saw him reclaim the all-time Champions League goalscoring record from Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portuguese and Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo has donated seven million euros to help all those who were affected by the earthquake in Nepal.
Three days after the disaster and as the human casualties increased, Cristiano Ronaldo used his Twitter account to ask his fans to help all those people that were left homeless or need medical relief.
This is not the first time the Portuguese superstar has contributed to a cause such as this. Last year, CR7 donated 1.5 million euros to help relief children affected by the Gaza Strip bombings, and he even gave a sick child's mom one pair of his shoes and a Real Madrid signed jersey in order to cover for the kid's treatment.
This is quite absolutely a commendable effort and one can begin to imagine how the world would really be a better place if all the super rich stars in Europe make such donations like CR7…. Just thinking out loud...
