Northern Group Drags Buhari To International Criminal Court

No comments :

A group, the Northern Coalition for Democracy and Justice, has called for the prosecution of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the International Criminal Court, ICC, The Hague for "orchestrating" the 2011 post-election violence in some parts of Northern of Nigeria.
The group, said to be a consortium of 17 non-governmental organisations, operating primarily in the Northern states of Nigeria, made the charge Thursday at a press briefing in Abuja at the Transcorps Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
In a statement read by its secretary for research and documentation, Ibrahim Baba, the group said it was compelled to "sustain the process for the prosecution of Mr. Buhari" which it claimed to have been instituted at the The Hague in May 2011, "for his role that orchestrated the 2011 post-election violence in some parts of the North."
Claiming national interest "devoid of partisanship and political colouration", the group said it was important that "those responsible for the premeditated arson, killings and destruction of properties" be brought to justice.
The group explained that recent provocative and inciting statements by politicians ahead of the 2015 general elections had influenced the renewed request for the ICC to urgently launch criminal investigations against Mr. Buhari in order to checkmate a reoccurrence of political violence.
While establishing grounds for its call for the prosecution of Buhari, it said: "Similarly, we recall that just before the 2011 general elections, the then presidential candidate of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari had categorically directed crowds in Hausa (language) at his campaign rallies in the north but particularly Minna, Kaduna and Maiduguri to protect their votes at all cost including killing and elimination of others.
"Like a nightmare, the spirit of victims of 2011 post-election violence is resurrecting today at this venue to re-echo the calls for justice and immediate prosecution of those responsible for imposing tears, sorrow, blood and violence on Nigerians in 2011.
"Another reason for institution of the case is to compel the political class to imbibe the culture of winning election through the sanctity of the ballot box devoid of intimidation, threat, intolerance, hate messages, resorting to self-help and violence. We remained concerned about gut-wrenching situation of people being intimidated on account of exercising their political liberty, choices and preferences. In the North, now, they attack supporters of a particular party and candidate."
In his address, Goran Sluiter, a Dutch professor of Law at ICC, who attended the briefing, said: "Based on available evidence, there are compelling reasons to believe that crimes against humanity – including murder, torture, rape, forcible population transfer, persecution, and other inhumane acts – were committed in the context of the politically-motivated sectarian violence that immediately followed Nigerian presidential elections of April 2011."
Mr. Sluitter said given the seriousness of the crimes, "the prosecutor at the ICC will be asked to conduct investigations into the alleged acts and their perpetrators, in particular former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari.
"The evidence collected to date strongly suggests that the highly inflammatory public comments made by General Buhari – prior to, during and immediately following 2011 elections – led directly to the deaths of over 88 people and the displacement of more than 65,000 individuals in April 2011."
He added that the northern group represented the aspirations of all Nigerians.
However the programme did not end without drama.
As Ibrahim Baba was ending the press address, some attendees and members of the coalition, who claimed to have been invited purportedly to campaign for peaceful elections, started jeering. They said they did not know the press conference was meant to discredit Mr. Buhari, accusing the conveners of promoting PDP agenda.
The dissident members were forcibly sent out of the conference room but they continued shouting, "This is unfair; we were not told to come for this!"
They were prevented from speaking with journalists but one of them, the most outspoken, said, while being pushed away, "Heh! Journalist, my name is Hassan from Borno State. They are deceiving us!"

Married Man Killed By Badoo Lover...she got mad when she discovered he was married with kids

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965

An oil worker with Halliburton Nigeria Limited, Bankole Charles, must have thought he was playing with an ordinary woman when he met Loretta Odikagbo, on Badoo, a dating site on social media, and started a relationship with her.

Little did he know that the affair would end his life when the same lady led some men to his house to snuff life out of him when she found out that he was married with children.

The 28-year-old Okadigbo met the deceased who is from Ondo State on the site in 2013 and they kicked off a relationship without knowing he was a married man and had hopes of getting married to him till she found out that he was already taken and in a fit of jealousy, organized his murder.

The breakingpoint cane when she found out that Charles was married and when she confronted him, he owned up to it but promised to buy her a car as compensation but when he failed to fulfil his promise, Okadigbo enlisted the help of one Ime Francis Moses, an Akwa Ibom indigene and another man who is still at large and stormed his Woji, Port Harcourt, Rivers State residence, and ended his life.

Odikagbo, an Ordinary National Diploma holder in Marketing from the River State Polytechnic (RIVPOLY), and Moses, a university drop out, are now languishing in the cells of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), after they were arrested following the murder of Charles.

The SCID team traced Odikagbo to the residence of her other boyfriend whom she was putting up with at Rumukpokwu, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area on December 10, last year.

Odikagbo confessed to her crime:
"I was arrested over the death of my boyfriend, late Charles Bankole. I conspired with my friend and took my in-law to his house to harass him so I could get some money from him, which led to his death, but I was not there when he died.
I was at the Automated Teller Machine (ATM). There is a third person that can tell the story of how he died but unfortunately, he has not been arrested. So, he is not here now. This story can't be complete if the third person is not arrested.
I am 28 years. I met Bankole on the internet. I initially did not know that Bankole was married; overtime I discovered. He actually promised to settle things with me. He talked about buying a car.
When I hinted this to my in-law (Ime), he said he had a way to help me get what I wanted from him and I conceded to the idea.
On the agreed day, I moved into Bankole's house and waited for them there. He came with another of his friend. I opened the door for them. They came in.
His junior started tying Bankole up. Ime was holding a torch which they came with because this happened in the night and there was no electricity supply and it was raining heavily.
At a point, I decided to go to the ATM with his (Bankole's) card to withdraw some money from his bank account. One of the two men decided to go with me. So, my in-law (Ime) was left behind with Bankole who was still alive when we left.
He (Ime) later met me at the ATM point to get some money from me. He informed me that he called a taxi driver to carry some things from Bankole's house. I told him that I was going because it was already late at night.
I was arrested on December 10, brought here (at the SCID), and showed picture of lifeless body of Bankole. I don't know who killed him. The relationship lasted for over a year. I am not so certain because we related a long time on the Internet before we met in real life."

On her reaction that the late man was married, she said:
"I was not actually angry, but he did not just tell me he was married. We never discussed marriage.
At a point, we were serious with the relationship but when I discovered his marital status, I was disappointed and decided to pull out to continue with my life but he insisted on buying me a car instead to calm me down. That was what happened.
I feel so terrible and primitive. I am guilty of the crime. Bankole was my first Internet boyfriend; I am not used to meeting people on the Internet or Facebook. I blame my action on hanging out with wrong friends."‎
But the Eket-born Ime gave a different account on how Charles died, making it clear that it was Loretta that actually killed him.

Hear his account:‎
"Loretta called and informed me that her boyfriend owed her some money, which he was supposed to use and settle her out of their broken relationship but he was turning her up and down.

I promised to help her get the money out from the man. On the day agreed, she called me and picked me up at my street junction, from where we proceeded to pick another boy she had earlier called for the job, but the boy came and declined going with us.

On our way out from the boy's junction, we met another boy who I know that loads taxi at the junction there. I called him and she explained to him what she wanted to do that night; he agreed to go with us.

When we got to the man's house, she went in while we stood under the staircase of the one-storey building he shared with other occupants, waiting for her instructions. I was holding a torch light which she gave me money to buy and a holding a car window winder, which looked like a gun, while the boy was holding a rope and cellotape she brought.

After a while, she came and opened the door for us. We got in through the kitchen, where we stood before she called us to come to the bedroom where she was with the man.

When we stepped into the room, I pointed the torch light on the man and told him that he befriended our sister for such a period of time, and pushed her out empty and without shelter, no settlement.

The man pleaded that we should wait, that he was going to settle her. At that point, she started to slap the man all over his face and used the tape to tape his mouth, after which the other boy tied his legs and hands.

It was then she asked the man for his ATM card and pin; she got them and went to the ATM point with the boy, while I was left with the man in case the pin failed. While they left for the ATM, they carried the man's phone and laptop.

After a while, she came back to me at the man's house. I asked her to come let us go, she said, 'no', that the man knows her very well, that if we should leave him at this junction, he will definitely come after her, and that when he gets her, she will mention my name. She asked if I will like to be arrested, I said 'no'.

She now went to the man's kitchen and brought polythene bag which she wore on the man's head and sat on it. As the man was struggling, I held his head until the man was motionless.

She gave me N28, 000 only. I feel very guilty for the action

Crisis Hit APC, Kwankwaso Group Might Declare For Jonathan

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965

Indications are rife that all is not well with the Kano state chapter of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ), as a result of a cold war between the Kano State governor, Alh . Rabiu Kwankwaso and the party's presidential Flagbearer, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

The crisis which has already began to polarise the party along loyalty lines has been blamed on what watchers claim high handedness by the presidential aspirant. They allege that Gen. Buhari has refused to recognise any other power bloc within the party especially the Kwankwasiya movement which is acclaimed to be one of the biggest blocs in the party nationwide.

Political watchers have attributed his refusal to handover the party's flag to the state governorship aspirant, Alh. Umar Ganduje during the just concluded presidential rally, as a fall out of this feud as he was not to disposed to Ganduje ' s emergence owing to the latter's membership of the Kwankwasiya.

This rivalry many believe has been in existence since the founding of the APC where legacy members of the party were not comfortable with the newcomers whom they claimed had come to take their place. It has also been gathered that the lack of trust between Kwankwaso and Buhari may stem from the latter's comments in 2010 when he called the General a serial coupist.

Speaking exclusively to our correspondent, Mallam Tanko Bamali a party stalwart lamented the situation, according to him since Buhari's entrance into the party due to merger, the opposition has become divided and even caused defection of major stakeholders in Kano.

He further lamented that they had expected that after these years of venturing into politics, Buhari should have realised the difference between dictatorship and democracy, to adopt democratic traits.

"Mai Gaskiya is not a bad man, his problem is that he fails to realise that this is politics and you don't always have your way, you allow the people decide, but he always insists on what he wants as if he is still in the army. It is this same character that cost him his presidency in previous attempts". He acknowledged.

Meanwhile, rumours are rife in the state that members ofthe Kwankwasiya movement, are already signifhing their disdain for the behaviour displayed by Buhari during the visit and have begun strategising towards delivering their governorship candidate Alh. Umar Ganduje while supporting Goodluck Jonathan for the presidency. However sources close to the Kano state governor, Mallam Rabiu Kwankwaso, have revealed that the governor has since been moving around pillars of his cult like followership to calm their nerves so as to abate failure in the February polls.

February Elections Might Be Postponed...Plot Thickens

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965

With less than one month to the general elections scheduled for February 14 and 28, there are indications that the Federal Government may announce a postponement of the polls.

The elections may be shifted by six to eight weeks, to now hold in April. The last general elections held in April 2011.

Daily Sun gathered that the elections might be postponed, as the military plans a massive onslaught against Boko Haram in the next couple of weeks. It was gathered that the National Security Adviser, Col Sambo Dasuki, Wednesday night met with service chiefs, inspector general of police, director general of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Professor Attahiru Jega, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Sources close to the INEC chairman revealed that the meeting was to find out from Jega the possibility of postponing the elections till April.

Feelers from the meeting revealed that the service chiefs hinted that a huge operation against Boko Haram was being planned, aimed at dealing the insurgents a final, fatal blow.

"The service chiefs reported that they had agreed that there must be a major offensive against Boko Haram, in collaboration with Chad, to end insurgency once and for all. This will entail the shift of the elections," a source revealed. To postpone the elections, Daily Sun gathered that the Federal Government would rely on the constitutional provision that polls could be shifted during a period of war or emergency.

Section 135 of the 1999 Constitution as amended states: "If the Federation is at war in which the territory of Nigeria is physically involved and the President considers that it is not practicable to hold elections, the National Assembly may, by resolution, extend the period of four years mentioned in sub-section (2) of this section from time to time; but no such extension shall exceed a period of six months at any one time."

Daily Sun gathered that Jega was not happy with the suggestion for elections to be shifted, but told the security meeting that he would consult with stakeholders.

The INEC chairman had told the meeting that since arrangements had been concluded on how Internally Displaced People (IDP) would vote, there was no point shifting the polls.

Dasuki had jetted out of the country to the United Kingdom after the meeting with service chiefs, where he hinted that he had suggested that elections be postponed to enable INEC conclude preparation. Daily Sun gathered that Dasuki's pronouncement in London shocked officials of INEC, who felt that he should have waited for the outcome of Jega's consultation before making comments. When contacted on the possibility of shifting the elections, Mr. Kayode Idowu, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, told Daily Sun: "There has been no official communication to that effect." It was gathered that the postponement of the elections could lead to the setting up of an interim government in the country. For some time now, the possibility of having an interim government had generated a lot of controversy.

Pastor Tunde Bakare, leader of the Latter Rain Assembly and Convener of the Save Nigeria Group, had first called for interim government, saying it may be the solution to the political crisis that might erupt in the country over the elections.

Speaking before President Jonathan formally joined the 2015 presidential race, Bakare  said the dilemma of whether the president should contest or not was a major issue the nation would grapple with this year. He hinged his fears on threats by those who do not want Jonathan to contest and that of his kinsmen in the Niger Delta, who have threatened to blow up oil installations in the region if he does not return to power. At a Sunday church service in Lagos, while preaching on the topic: High Profile Scandals (Part 2), subtitled: Conspicuous Consumption, the pastor said there was need for an interim government.

Also suggesting an interim government, former presidential candidate, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, said it was the only way to address some fundamental issues in the country.

Braithwaite had stated, at a press conference organised by Mr. Toni Iwobi, an Italian Nigerian and leading member of Legal North Party in Italy, in Abuja, that to conduct a campaign that ignores fundamental changes and talk about change or transformation merely on the basis of change of personnel, was a disservice to Nigerians. "It is for this reason that I have advocated for an interim government rather than these uncertain elections, which those with deep thinking already see as a failure in the making despite assurances from INEC," he said. The politicians advised that merely angling for a change to Buhari or any other person will not change the fundamental problem of the country, adding that "our economic projects and policies will continue to underperform unless there is structural change in our fiscal federalism."

Postpone polls for 3 months –NSA Dasuki
No, we won't–INEC‎

Controversy has started trailing the February 14 date for the presidential election as key stakeholders disagree over delay of the exercise.

Speaking in London yesterday, the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, called for the postponement of the elections to allow more time for the distribution of the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs).

Dasuki, who appeared before a British audience at the London think-tank, Chatham House, disclosed that he had met with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and advised that it would be sensible to postpone the poll within the three months it had to legally take place.

"It costs you nothing, it's still within the law," Dasuki said he had told the INEC chairman, Prof. Atahiru Jega. AFP reported that Dasuki told Chatham House that a postponement would be "safer for all of us."

Reacting to Dasuki's call for polls delay, INEC spokesman, Kayode Idowu, told Reuters news agency that there were currently no plans to delay the exercise. "It is not a conversation of the commission at all. As far as we are talking now, the date is what it is," Mr Idowu said.

Renowned Lagos Lawyer, Fred Agbaje in his reaction described the call for the postponement as a wishful thinking which would do Nigeria no good.

He added: "The proposal is dangerously pregnant, unconstitutional and runs contrary to all the logistices/money so far spent on the election by INEC.

However, a group, The PR Nigeria, has stated that National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki only gave the assurance that the February general elections would be successful and violence-free.

The organisation stated that while speaking as a guest of the Chatham House in London, Dasuki said: "The 2015 elections are expected to be relatively peaceful and violence free. The Federal Government has taken all necessary measures to ensure this by making adequate provisions for INEC, security agencies and by supporting numerous sensitisation programs."

He admitted that there were anxiety in certain quarters about whether elections will hold in the North East and the ability of the government to ensure that the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) will be able to vote but affirmed in the positive. "Our answer to both of those is yes. As far as is possible, we are determined that adequate security will be in place to enable elections in all the areas in the North East that are safe, and that the IDP's will be provided with the opportunity to exercise their vote," he explained."

The NSA who said to have commended the emergence of a strong opposition in the polity, saying it was a sign of the growing maturity of the country's democracy.

There is big money in armed robbery -Popular Alaba Trader Arrested With GangMembers Confesses

A popular trader in Alaba International Market, Lagos, and a gang leader, Nnamdi (surname withheld) has been arrested by the police for alleged armed robbery.

Nnamdi and six others are being interrogated at the State  Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the police command, Ikeja.

The suspected bandits who were paraded yesterday by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Kayode Aderanti, at the command headquarters, Ikeja, yesterday spoke of how they were decieving people that they were businessmen.

Nnamdi said: "I am a businessman in Alaba International Market. I deal in musical equipment. The same thing is applicable to my members. They have businesses in the market. Some sell generator parts or sets, others sell one thing or the other to decieve people that we are doing genuine businesses.

"I got  N28 million in one robbery operaton. There is really big money in armed robbery because what business can one do to make N28 million in one day? We robbed a man coming in from Cotonou. It was our  informant that told us that the man was coming into the country. It was the most successful robbery operation that I ever participated in. I got N28 million, others got between N25 million and N28 million, depending on their roles. I am the gang leader. The second robbery was in Cotonou, we raided a bank. We got big money also, but I can't say how much but, I got N17 million and my boys got about N5 million each. Robbery in Cotonou is easier than in Nigeria. In Cotonou, you don't even need a gun to operate. We got it easy in Cotonou robbery. But in Nigeria, especially in Lagos, you need to be very careful.

"Well, I built a very magnificient building in my village. I have another one in Lagos. I bought some cars, but I am regretting everything now. I am going to face big shame both in the market and in my village because people see me as a big guy. What of my church? I am finished, I am a Catholic and an active church member who belongs to many societies, my church members will now see me as an evil person. I am exposed to ridicule. Well, most people in Alaba International Market, and other markets are into armed robbery or other illegal businesses.

"Like Victor (surname also withheld), he is my gang member and he sells generator sets. He is equally seen in the market as a big man. The other person, Ifeanacho (aka Messiah) is not in Alaba Market, but when he got big money, he invested in trucks. He also bought some taxis and commercial buses. He really utilized his money very well, but all is now vanity.

"My advice to people is that they should not envy people they see in affluence as they may have acquired their wealth through illegal means, especially armed robbery. Moreso, the money you got through armed robbery brings apprehension as you live in perpetual fear. Now, I have been living in fear and the thing I was fearing all this while has finally happened to me.I have been arrested and I don't know my fate yet," Nnamdi said.

CP Aderanti who paraded the suspects said they were international armed robbers who have all confessed to the Officer in charge of SARS, Abba Kyari and his team that they participated in several robberies including bank robbery in Port Novo, Benin Republic, a filling station and Bureau de change in Mali. They made an attempt to rob a bank on Shagamu Road, Ikorodu. They participated in several robberies in Port Harcourt, Kano and the biggest of it all, N100 milion successful robbery in Alakija area of Lagos from which Nnamdi built a mega mansion at Igando area of the metroplis and Ifeanacho built a duplex in his village in Ebonyi State"

CP Aderanti said he has ordered Kyari to go after other fleeing members of the gang

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation alleged on Thursday that the school certificate presented by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), was forged.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, made the allegation at a press conference in Abuja.
He, however, added that the organisation had yet to contact the school that issued the certificate to either confirm or deny its authenticity.

But when one of our correspondents spoke with the school Principal, Mr. Isyaku Bello on the telephone, he said the certificate he signed was genuine.

The principal said, "If they are doubting the result, then they should come and see the authentic copy and not the photocopy sent to us by the Cambridge West Africa School.

"We are here waiting for anybody doubting what we have sent out. We are not running away. Let them come and found out. "

Nevertheless, Fani-Kayode still insisted that the document, which were released by the Ministry of Education, Katsina State and the University of Cambridge, was fraudulently procured.

He said those who authored the result must be arrested by the police and be prosecuted.

He said, "Our conclusion from all these is that the document purportedly released by the Government College (Pilot) Katsina, upon which the APC presidential candidate hopes to bury the doubt about his eligibility for next month's election is forged, manipulated and fraudulently procured. It is therefore untenable in fact and in law.

"We do not know who the authors and masterminds of this forgery are but whoever they are, we urge them to come forward and be identified.

"If they fail to come forward voluntarily, we hereby call on the police and other security agencies to seek them out, find them, arrest them, interrogate them and prosecute them, in accordance with the laws of the land."

Fani-Kayode also called on Buhari to submit himself to the police to answer charges of perjury, alleging that the former Head of State lied on oath about his academic qualification.

This, he said, was what a man who "claims to represent integrity and due process ought to do in this situation."

He said there was no way that Buhari could extricate himself from the crisis, adding that the more he tried "to extricate himself, the more he stumbles into a new phase in the unfolding narrative of his obvious complicity in a matter that he claimed borders on perjury."

He said having carefully studied the statement of result as signed by the "school principal" and an "examination officer" of the Government College, Katsina, as well as the attached document titled, 'University of Cambridge West Africa School Certificate 1961', his campaign organisation believed that the result was not genuine.

He raised the following observations and comments on the document.

The former Minister of Aviation said, "The result sheet which was attributed to the Cambridge examination body is clearly a super imposition of one document on another, as you will shortly see in the enlarged image of the result sheet as published. The column lines on the part where names are printed do not align with the blank columns while there is an introduction of extraneous lines on some other columns.

"The document contains an obvious alteration on the Mathematics column of the candidate, Mohamed Buhari, who was assumed to have scored an 'F' in the subject. This raises a very fundamental issue of validity in view of the fact that the accompanying result sheet states that 'any alteration or erasure renders this statement of result invalid.'

"This is the standard practice in all interpretation of documents, especially academic records. The question we put to Gen. Buhari and his party is whether this alteration was done by the University of Cambridge.

Asked if his organisation has made any request to verify the authenticity of the documents, he said no.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation has said that it prefers not to respond to the provocations of Fani-Kayode, but rather engage him on issues that have the potential to bring the greatest good for the greatest number of Nigerians.

A press statement signed by Director of Media and Publicity of the APCPCO, Mallam Garba Shehu, on Thursday said it was laughable the PDP would not let-go of the educational qualification of the APC presidential candidate, even when the matter had been exhaustively laid to rest.

"It is not our desire in the APC presidential campaign organisation to join an individual who has a record of talking to please the moment on any petty issue. At some point in the recent past, it was convenient for Fani-Kayode to say this of the APC and its leaders: 'What Nigerians need now is to join hands with the APC leaders, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu to move the nation forward. Today, Fani-Kayode sees no desecration in recanting that same position, just to satisfy his convenience."

"The APC and its candidate are in this presidential campaign to discuss issues that will improve the standard of living of Nigerians and ensure that the people of this country are properly secured. Whenever the PDP and its presidential campaign spokesman feel ready to join us on this noble path, we will not be willing to join them on petty issues," Shehu said.

He noted that these distractions are being promoted in order to provide a blanket cover over the shortcomings of the Jonathan administration in the areas of security, employment, war against corruption and infrastructure.

"Nigerians need no telling that all these distractions and provocations by Jonathan, the PDP and their cohorts are aimed at ensuring that they escape scrutiny over their score card marked by insecurity, unemployment and rampant corruption," Shehu said.

The ethnic nationalities in the Middle Belt under the aegis of the Middle Belt Dialogue, MBD, have said that although President Goodluck Jonathan failed the zone during his first term in office, they would support him instead of the Presidential candidate of the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari, rtd.JonathanThey said that Jonathan failed the Middle Belt which supported him massively in 2011, but regretted that Buhari was not a better alternative because as a life patron of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, he had never for once called to order, suspected ''Fulani herdsmen who had been rampaging through the Middle Belt, dispossessing our people of their land, raping women and killing without compunction."

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud died in the early hours of today, Friday and was succeeded by his half-brother Salman on the throne of the world's biggest oil exporter.

King Abdullah, who was born in 1924, died at 1 a.m. in Riyadh, the royal court said in a statement. He became Saudi Arabia's sixth king in August 2005 and was de facto ruler for almost a decade before that, after King Fahd was incapacitated by a stroke in 1996. Prince Muqrin, 69, another half-brother, has been named Crown Prince, the state-run Saudi Press Agency said. Oil prices surged after the announcement.

The transition "will be smooth," said Ghanem Nuseibeh, founder of Cornerstone Global Associates, which advises clients on risk in the Middle East. When power starts moving to the next generation of the ruling family, "that's when tension could start brewing," he said by phone after the announcement.

Salman, 79, was named as crown prince in 2012 and takes over as ruler of the Arab world's biggest economy amid turbulence across the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has joined the U.S. coalition against Islamic State and faces a growing threat from militant attacks within the kingdom, as well as unrest sweeping the Arab world outside its borders. Regional rival Iran and its Shiite allies are gaining influence, while plunging oil prices are curbing Saudi Arabia's capacity to invest.

President Barack Obama of America amongst other world leaders have expressed condolences to the royal family and the Saudi people, calling Abdullah a ruler who "took bold steps."
"King Abdullah's vision was dedicated to the education of his people and to greater engagement with the world," Obama said in an e-mailed statement. "The closeness and strength off the partnership between our two countries is part of King Abdullah's legacy."
Japan's government praised Abdullah as a peace keeper.
"King Abdullah had played a big role in maintaining peace and stability in the Kingdom, the Islamic world, the world, for many years," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said at a press briefing in Tokyo. "He first visited our country in 1998 as Crown Prince and consolidated the friendship between the two nations. We will develop the relationship between the two nations on top of the foundation built by King Abdullah."
West Texas Intermediate for March delivery gained as much as $1.45 and traded at $47.20 at midday in Hong Kong. Crude prices have plunged more than 50 percent since June, and Saudi Arabia led a group of OPEC members resisting calls for production cuts to halt the decline.
Abdullah, whose funeral will be held in Riyadh later on Friday, is the third senior member of the royal family to die since 2011. Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud died in October that year and his successor, Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, died nine months later.

Don't Dare Disrupt Our Presidential Rally -APC Warns Fayose

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned Gov. Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State against disrupting or interfering in any way with the APC presidential campaign rally in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday, saying the governor's plan to hold a parallel rally on the same day is a recipe for chaos.
In a statement in Lagos, Friday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party wondered why Gov. Fayose will schedule a rally also for Saturday at Fajuyi Park, which is a major route to the venue of the APC presidential campaign rally.
"This is nothing but a deliberate act of provocation, and it is a dangerous game by a Governor who has now become notorious for making incendiary statements and taking irrational actions. Gov. Fayose should be told in clear terms that being the Governor of a state demands huge responsibility, not brazen rascality," it said.
APC wondered what point the Governor was trying to prove by seeking to set the supporters of his party, the PDP, against those of our party, which is basically what he is planning to do by organizing a parallel rally along a major route to ours at Ado-Ekiti on Saturday.
The party said its members and supporters, in line with their peaceful nature and the ethos of APC, neither disrupted nor interfered with the PDP presidential campaign rally at Ado, and finds it difficult to understand why the Governor will be plotting to trigger chaos and disrupt the APC presidential campaign rally.
"There must be a limit to mischief and waggishness, especially from a Governor that almost set Nigeria on fire with an irresponsible, incendiary and repugnant advertisement wishing our presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, dead.
"Since everything points to the fact that Gov. Fayose lacks the capacity to understand the implication of his actions, it is high time his masters called him to order before he sets the country on fire. A good starting point is to warn him against holding a parallel tally at Ado on Saturday.
"The security agencies should also advise the Governor against actions that are capable of triggering violence and disrupting public peace. If the Governor fails to heed the voice of reason, then he should be solely held responsible if there is any breach of peace or a disruption of the APC presidential campaign rally at Ado-Ekiti on Saturday" it said.
