At least 442 commuter bus drivers in three motor parks in Lagos State, western Nigeria, have tested positive for hard drugs, such as cocaine, marijuana and others and drive under the influence of these dangerous drugs, the Lagos State Government has revealed.‎
Reports from the Lagos State Ministry of Health revealed that of the 801 bus drivers tested for hard drugs, 442 of them tested positive for cocaine, marijuana, morphine, opiate, ketamine and others.
This represents 55 percent of the total number of drivers tested and showed an increased intake of hard drugs by drivers while conveying passengers on Lagos routes.
The tests were carried out in Mosafejo, Mushin and Oshodi/Obalende Motor Parks in December 2014.
According to the report made available to News men, the number of drivers that tested positive for using hard drugs while driving in 2014 is far higher than the same number discovered when a similar test was conducted in 2013. In 2013, out of the 434  bus drivers tested for hard drugs, 74 of them were found to be driving under the influence of cocaine, marijuana and the rest.
Also, in 2012, of the 820 drivers screened for hard drug intake, 215 of them tested positive.

Similarly, many of the bus drivers have tested positive for alcoholic intake while behind the wheels across the state.
The test conducted in three motor parks in December 2014 showed that of the 929 drivers screened, 202 of them tested positive for taking alcohol while driving.
In 2013, of the 440 commercial bus drivers tested for alcohol intake, 226 of them tested positive, representing 51 percent, while in 2012, of the 885 drivers tested, 215 of them were under the influence of alcohol while driving.
Of the 930 bus drivers screened for diabetes and hypertension in 2014, at least 220 of them tested positive. In 2013, of the 576 screened for the same ailment, 130 of them were positive, while in 2012, at least, 233 of the 959 screened tested positive for diabetes and hypertension.
According to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, the Motor Park Health and Safety Programme was an initiative of the Health Ministry, whose main aim was to reduce the prevalence of road traffic accidents by ensuring the safety of the driver, passengers and other road users.
He said the Motor Park Health and Safety Programme was flagged off  in 2012 following the high number of deaths due to road traffic accidents, saying that to date, 1,985 commuter bus drivers and other transport workers have been screened.
"It is a multi-sectoral effort with the Ministry of Transportation as partner. The focus is on diagnosis and management of hypertension, diabetes and eye screening in addition to substance and alcohol abuse among road transport workers.
"Three motor parks missions were carried out in the last one year at Mosafejo Motor Park between 8 and 9 December, 2014; Mushin Motor Park between 10 and 11 December 2014 and Oshodi/Obalende bus terminus between 15 and 18 December, 2014," he stated.

Blogger Hacked To Death, Third Victim In Three Months

A Bangladeshi blogger was killed by knife-wielding attackers in the country's northeast earlier today (Tuesday 12th May), the third such murder in less than three months and further evidence of spiraling religious fundamentalism and intolerance of free speech in the South Asian nation.
Ananta Bijoy Das was set upon by four assailants with machetes in Sylhet district, a local police official told Reuters. The 33-year-old, who worked as a banker, was a blogger who advocated secularism through his writing.
Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority country liberated from Pakistan by the 1971 war between India and Pakistan, has seen a sudden increase in attacks by Islamic fundamentalists against writers and intellectuals speaking out against religious extremism. The country is also in the midst of larger political unrest, with violent clashes between supporters of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her political rival opposition leader Khaleda Zia claiming dozens of lives this year. At least 64 people have been killed by law enforcement since January, the head of a Bangladeshi human-rights organization told al-Jazeera America.
"These are only the deaths that we know about," Sultana Kamal of the organization Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) said. "Usually, they go unreported."
The rise of religious fundamentalism is worrying. Das' assassination is similar to those of fellow writers Washiqur Rahman and Avijit Roy, killed by the same method on March 30 and Feb. 26, respectively. Das was also a contributor to Mukto-Mona or "Free Mind," a well-known secular blog that Atlanta-based Roy founded, according to the local newspaper Daily Star.
Roy's wife Rafida Ahmed, who was with him when he was killed and was seriously injured in the February attack, called it a "global act of terrorism" and criticized the Dhaka authorities for their lackluster response. "What almost bothers me more is that no one from the Bangladesh government has reached out to me," she said in an exclusive interview with Reuters published Monday. "It's as if I don't exist, and they are afraid of the extremists," she said. "Is Bangladesh going to be the next Pakistan or Afghanistan?"

Trekking Galore! Ikorodu Youths Embark On Appeal Trek To Alausa

In what seems like taking the bull by the horns, a social crusade group, Ikorodu Ambassadors, is calling residents of Ikorodu Division to join in an appeal trek to the Governor's office in Alausa scheduled for Friday, May 15, 2015.
"Kick off time would be 7am, any interested persons that is ready psychologically and physically can join us in the trek but if you cannot trek, you can bid us farewell as we move or wait for us at the main gate of Alausa Secretariat," the group wrote in a statement made available to BlackBox Nigeria.
BBN gathered that the march is set to protest a claim that Ikorodu Division was poorly represented in the outgoing cabinet in Lagos State. The group said rather than protest, it is appealing to the leadership of the governing party, All Progressives Congress(APC) to consider Ikorodu for principal positions like Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Commissioners, Board of Directors, Special Advisers amongst others.
According to the Coordinator of the group, Rasheed Fatuga," People of Ikorodu Division have supported and voted massively for the APC in the last General Elections and they deserve a better treatment. This is not a Protest but an appeal, and our appeal goes to the Lagos State Government, the APC Leaders in Ikorodu Division and in Lagos State," he stated.
However, a Chieftain of People's Democratic Party (PDP), who preferred to be anonymous told BBN that it is a complete waste of effort and energy by the group.
"If truly APC is a listening party and believes in merit, should a community that voted for the party be begging for positions again? It is just a misplaced priority. Ikorodu people do not beg for positions, what the youths are doing is not Ikorodu-like. We are Ogas we do not beg for cheap positions," he said.
BlackBox Nigeria shall bring you more updates as it unfolds...

Lagos Judge Sentence Four Men To 24-Years Imprisonment For Stealing Petrol

No comments :

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday convicted and sentenced four men to a prison term of 24 years for stealing petroleum products belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.‎
The four convicts, who are to share the jail term equally, are Yama Abass, Adeleke Adetoro, Olaniyi Tope and Beliya Abegunde.
The men, who stole 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit valued at approximately N3.2m, had been arraigned before Justice Okon Abang last year August along with one Alabi Olayinka, an accountant in a petrol station in Lagos.
But Abang, who convicted Abass, Adetoro, Tope and Abegunde on counts three and four of the charge, discharged and acquitted Olayinka.
The judge, who said the evidence before the court did not link Olayinka to the crime, said Olayinka would have a good case against the police if he sued for "unlawful arrest, detention and malicious prosecution."
Pronouncing the sentence, Abang refused the plea by the defence counsel to temper justice with mercy, saying "nobody should commit an offence and expect the court to show mercy."
"They have no sympathy for this country and the citizens. In spite of all the efforts made by the Federal Government to protect the petroleum pipelines and make petrol to get to everybody with ease, the convicts and their cohorts have made consistent efforts to sabotage and frustrate the effort of the Federal Government," the judge said.
Describing them as harbingers of evil, the judge said the convicts cannot not plant thorns and expect to harvest flowers, adding that it was shameful that in spite being blessed with petrol, Nigerian citizens were still suffering from scarcity on account of the activities of vandals.
According to the charge marked FHC/L/220c/2014, the four convicts with some suspects still at large conspired and damaged oil pipelines and stole 33,000 litres of PMS belonging to the NNPC on July 13 along Epe/Ikorodu road in Lagos.
They were said to have been apprehended while selling the stolen products to filling stations in the city.
The offence, according to the prosecution contravened sections 390 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and Section 7 (a) and (b) of the Miscellaneous Offence Act, Cap M 17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Abang, in his judgment, ordered the petrol stations that bought the stolen products to make restitution in the sum of N3.2m to the Federal Government within seven days of the judgment.
The court also ordered the sale of the tanker used in conveying the stolen product by auction within 14 days of the judgment.
The prosecution was ordered to pay the proceeds into the coffers of the Federal Government.
