In the past, the music industry in this part of the world was simply a men's world with the male folks totally dominating all genres.
However in recent times, female industry players have upped their ante and stepped up their game tactically positing themselves as equal stakeholders in the industry. These days, female musicians are not just contended with female artiste awards as they are equal contenders for the artiste of the year in the various award events in Nigeria and abroad.
BlackBoxNigeria presents the biggest female musicians today who are giving the "boys" a big run for their money...

Tiwa Savage
No doubt Tiwatope Savage is not just a top female artiste, she is also one of the most sought after musician in this part of the world right now. Having had a golden experience performing behind some of the most celebrated names in the world, Tiwa returned home prepared and it wasn't surprising that she has remained on top ever since giving the male folks a huge battle for their game. Since the unceremonious exit of Dbanj from Don Jazzy's 'musicville', Tiwa has remained the biggest artiste linked with the Mavins Record boss and she was even rumored to have been instrumental to crooner, Wande Coal's Mavins cessation. Married to her former manager and business partner, news of marriage troubles have not however found its way to affecting the singer's A+ game with superb stage craft second to none.

Seyi Shay: Born Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua in the UK, Seyi Shay no doubt is another industry queen giving the guys a tough play. This diva gave us 'Irawo' and all thought that was it with many thinking this was another "one hit wonder" but alas Shay had other plans. Her reggae tempo smash hit alongside rave of the moment Patoranking and Shay Dee, 'Murda' to put modestly became an infectious track which expectedly went viral. This Etisalat ambassador is simply unpredictable. One minute she is that easy going girl and before one can say 'Goodluck', she transforms into that fierce stage performer with enigmatic dance routines.
You need to see her perform life!

Waje
Aituaje Iruobe might have emerged in the industry after a brief stint on a couple of tracks by PSquare but this mother of one has since established herself as a vocalist of repute with her sometimes sonorous and ofcourse lovely vocal delivery. She is reputed to have the best vocal performance in the land which has made her one of the most sought after singers in the country.
Waje's delivery on Mi's 'One Naira' has continued to earn her plaudits while her recently released hit 'Onye' which features Tiwa Savage has remained a fan favorite doubled with the hilarious visuals which has cameo appearances from bad boy Brian Okpara and Waje's bestie, Omawumi.

Omawumi: Ms Megbele came into the industry after emerging runner-up at the 2007 West Africa Idol won by Timi Dakolo. This 32-year old mother of one quickly established herself as one to be taken seriously in the male dominated industry with a release of her first single 'In the music' which was a fans favorite. Her debut album 'Wonder Woman' didn't do badly in the market while her sophomore Lasso of Truth further established the Delta born singer as one to be taking seriously. With jams like 'if you ask me', 'bottom belle' and self titles "Megbele' etc, Omawumi has proven that she sures knows her onions. The singer recently got engaged to the father of her only daughter and marriage bells are expected soon.

Cynthia Morgan: Sultry and controversial, Ms Morgan isn't a push over when it comes to the female gang. She was first observed a few years ago when she featured on indigenous rapper Jhybo's 'Ejo le fe ro' with a unique patois delivery never heard from a female act in Nigeria. She would later get signed unto Jude Okoye's Northside Entertainment. Her single 'Don't break my heart' further established her as a singer to be taken seriously while she has also delivered on several collaborations most recently the female version of the viral 'Shoki' by YBNL signee, Lil_Kesh.

Niyola: Very few people know this but the truth is asides Weird Mc and perhaps Sasha, Niyola is apparently the longest Performing female act in the country. She initially joined Eldee's Trybe Record in the mid 2000s before being signed unto West Side music which had some of the brightest stars of that era including Faze, Freestyle, Lara George etc.
Eniola Akinbo released an album with West Side which wasn't really popular. However, she returned with Banky W's EME last year and has rejuvenated her career as top vocalist of repute. Her E.M.E debut, 'toh bad' remains a huge success while she also recently did a song with label boss Banky titled 'Love to Love' following the success of an earlier released 'Be my lover' by the duo. Niyola's voice is no doubt one of the best in the industry and fans patiently awaits an album. .

Yemi Alade
Millions of music lovers can't stop shaking to the monster hit 'Johnny' but I bet you never knew the singer Yemi Alade is no novice in the industry. Born to a Yoruba father and Igbo mother, Yemi Eberechy Alade first emerged on the music scene after winning the Peak Talent Show in 2009.
The talented Yemi released her debut single 'Fimisile' featuring Eldee a few months after receiving good reviews. The 2010 Geography graduate from the University of Lagos has in recent times remained one of the artistes with constant air plays on radio as well as social media followings. Follow up singles like 'Tangerine' and 'Kissing' has also earned the singer additional accolades.

Chidinma
Ms Kedike no doubt is another Nigerian queen who have remained consistent since she was crowned the first female winner of the West African Project fame. From her debut single 'Jankoliko' featuring Sound Sultan to 'Kedike' which further established her as an act to be taken seriously, Chidinma has proven that she is not ready to be pushed to the background.
Her track 'Emi ni baller' which features label mate, Suspect and it's remix done with Wizkid remains a fan favorite in the country. Chidinma has been nominated and have won several awards in the country and outside including the 2012 Kora Award
as 'Best Female Artiste Of the Year'. She was also recently featured on the female remix of the infectious 'Shoki' by Lil_Kesh.

Worthy of note however are other female raves of the moment including enigmatic Eva, Saeon and Mo'Chedah who recently made a grand return with 'Destinabari' featuring Phyno.

Burkina Faso Revolt: Not Yet Uhuru As Army Refuses To Quit

Lt Col Zida was previously second in command of the presidential guard

Burkina Faso's interim leader has dismissed the African Union's imposition of a two-week deadline to hand power to civilians.

"We are not afraid of sanctions, we care much more about stability," said Lt Col Isaac Zida after talks with opposition parties and civil society.

They have agreed to hold elections next year but not on an interim leader.
The military took power after President Blaise Compaore was forced to quit last week amid mass protests.

The West African regional body Ecowas has appointed Senegalese President Macky Sall to leads its mediation efforts in Burkina Faso.

He was one of three leaders who travelled to the capital, Ouagadougou, on Wednesday for the talks, which led to the one-year transition agreement.

The talks are continuing as the various parties attempt to agree on a civilian interim leader.
Some opposition parties do not want Mr Compaore's former governing party to be involved in the discussions.

Col Zida has agreed to hand over power to civilians but late on Thursday said he was not concerned by the African Union deadline.

"We have waited on the African Union in moments when it should have shown its fraternity and its friendship but instead was not there," he said.

"It's unfortunate but it's not too late."

Sanctions danger

Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has said he thought the threat of sanctions would be avoided.

"I am certain that we will not reach the stage where the international community will have to impose sanctions," the AP news agency quotes him as saying.

The AU sanctions could include suspension of Burkina Faso's AU membership and a travel ban on military officials. The AU's Peace and Security Council is expected to meet again later this month to discuss the crisis.

Under Burkina Faso's constitution, the head of the National Assembly should take office if the president resigns.

However, Col Zida was previously second in command of the presidential guard.
Mr Compaore first seized power in a coup in 1987, and went on to win four disputed elections.

The protests were triggered by his plan to amend the constitution so that he could run for office again in elections next year.

After resigning, Mr Compaore fled to neighbouring Ivory Coast.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Lagos State chapter has accused Governor Babatunde Fashola of misleading Lagosians about the duty of the federal task force.

PDP in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani, said the governor was wrong to have informed Lagosians to resist officials of the task force.

The PDP said the governor was vying for the Vice Presidency seat and was only trying to impress the leadership of his party, the All Progressives Congress, by launching a verbal assault on the PDP.
He said, "The Lagos State PDP has come out to swiftly deny the existence of the federal task force for the purpose of election. We maintain that the governor's information on the innocent Nigerians is not only empty but laughable and has thus reduced the governor's office to a 'comic relief'.

"Fashola is currently agitated and restless in office because of his over ambition to be the Vice President of Nigeria, a wish now strongly threatened by an opposition group within the APC.

"The attempt to be relevant and be in the media for the stated inordinate ambition has influenced the governor's recent contributions to national issues in a negative way. We, therefore, counsel the governor to pursue his political ambition without blackmailing the PDP or the Federal Government but to maintain the level of decorum worthy of the office."

The party said the APC was only jittery because its time was almost up as Lagosians would vote it out next year.

"The domineering era of Lagos APC has come and gone in the state. We advise the chapter to get its information verified and cogent in order to desist from being a party of mockery", the PDP said.‎
