Students of Lagos State University under the aegis of Lagos State University Students Union(LASUSU) has condemned the ongoing recess ordered by the school management saying it is against the wishes of the students and that the students are tired of sitting at home idle.
In a communique obtained by BlackBox Nigeria, the students expressed sadness over the continued delay and called on the Lagos State Government and the school management to reopen the school within the next 48 hours or be ready to face them.
The statement which was signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Union, Adebanjo Fatai described as "reckless and irrational" the decision of the management not to reopen the school.
Read full statement below...
With a saddened and bleeding heart, the Students' Union of Lasu wholeheartedly condemns the online bulletin released by the University Management that the "declared recess is still very much in force"
The Students' Union of LASU respectfully assert that the online bulletin released by LASU Management shows how irrational and reckless the Management is towards the Reopening of LASU.
The love of LASUites is never in the heart of the Management as we can deduce that the management and the State Govt is not ready to reopen the school as they are not forthcoming with regards to the issue of resumption.
In this light, the Students Union condemns and rejects in totality the online bulletin released by LASU Management that " the recess is very much in force" as most of our mates in other universities across the country are already graduating while we are still swimming in the pool of recess.
Flowing from the aforesaid, the Students' Union of LASU therefore give a 48hours Ultimatum to the Lagos State Govt and the University Management to reopen the University for academic activities to return back to the State owned University.

Signed
Adebanjo Fatai A (D Erudite)
25th Public Relations Officer

A 45-year-old commercial driver, Saturday Akpomose, narrowly escaped death last Saturday, after he was attacked by seven dogs at Ajah area of Lagos State. The timely intervention of residents and passers-by saved the driver from the dogs.
Akpomose, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, had gone to the area with his wife to visit his in-law, Mr. Christian Peter, when the dogs pounced on him.
Vanguard gathered that the dogs, owned by a Navy Captain, were being taken out to ease themselves at a nearby uncompleted building, when they saw Akpomose and pounced on him.
The matter was reported at Ogombo Police Division, which referred Akpomose to the General Hospital at Akodo, for immediate treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

His story
When the victim was visited in the hospital, he said: "My wife and I went to visit my in-law on Sunday. He lives at Okun Ajah Road, in Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area. Later, on Tuesday morning, I just strolled out of the compound and came across the dogs.
"As I stepped out, I saw a security man coming out with several dogs. They were very huge Alsatian dogs. I was terrified when I saw them and as I tried to go back in, they overpowered the man holding them.
"As I bent down to pick a stone and scare them away, they pounced on me and that was all I knew. They bit me in almost all parts of my body. As I screamed, some residents came out and tried to scare away the dogs with sticks.
"My screams even woke up my in-law who was asleep in the house. At a time, I became weak and unconscious and it was the people who rushed me to the hospital."

Dogs' owner intervenes
A visit to the residence of the dogs' owner also revealed this. The Chief Security Officer attached to the building, who identified himself simply as Victor, said: "Immediately I got back home, I explained his condition to my boss who directed me to see his family and take a decision on how to transfer the victim to his own private hospital for proper medical attention.
"We have bought all the drugs they asked us to buy. We are showing the receipt to you just to let you know that we care about the victim."

APC Condemns Ondo Deputy Governor's Impeachment, Says It Is A Breach Of Constitution

The All Progressives Congress, yesterday, rejected the impeachment of Ondo State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ali Olanusi, stressing that the process of his removal violated provisions of the impeachment clause in the 1999 Constitution.

Olanusi
The party added that the decision of the State House of Assembly was a contempt of court that ordered all parties to maintain status quo in a suit the deputy governor filed before he travelled out to challenge the plan to impeach him.
The party's National Vice Chairman in charge of South-west, Chief Pius Akinyelure faulted Olanusi's impeachment in a statement he issued in Lagos, noting that the decision of the state assembly would not stand.
Akinyelure described the impeachment process as a mockery of constitutional order, which he said, Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko and all members of the State House of Assembly were sworn in to uphold.
He lamented that despite the decision of a High Court sitting in Akure that all parties should maintain status quo until substantive suit is determined, the legislative arm of the state went ahead to impeach the deputy governor.
Akinyelure said the House of Assembly committed three different infractions to the 1999 Constitution in the process of the deputy governor, who had travelled out of the country for medical check-up before impeachment procedures started.

Why Buhari Barred AIT From Covering His Event

No comments :

As earlier reported, Security handlers of the President-Elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on Monday barred the television crew of the African Independent Television from covering the activities of their principal until further notice.
It was gathered that the security team cited adverse security reports and ethical issues as reasons for their action.
Members of the AIT crew, who were at Defence House, venue of a meeting between the President-elect and a visiting Cuban delegation, led by its Ambassador to Nigeria, were asked to leave the vicinity until further notice.
The crew, who did not speak on record, insisted they would remain and continue to do their jobs because they had yet to be "formally informed."
"Yes, we were told but we cannot just leave; we have a job to do. In any case, we have not been officially informed about what we have done wrong," one of them said.

Director of Press of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed the development.
He said concerns over security and the need to sort out some ethical issues were responsible for the action.
Shehu said, "AIT has been asked to stay aside based on security and family concerns. In addition, General Buhari has decided that they will have to resolve some issues relating to issues of standard and ethics.
"We will be talking with them to try and resolve the matter but for now, the station has been asked to stay aside because, like I said, there are some family and security concerns.
"They have been asked to step down their coverage until we resolve the matter with them on ethics and standards."

Hmmmm! Banks Now Using Female Bankers To Woo New Senators, Reps For Transactions

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Commercial banks have sent marketers, mostly females after newly-elected senators and members of the House of Representatives in Abuja to open discussions on investments and other business deals.
The energetic, sweet-talking and mostly female marketers, flooded the International Conference Centre, venue of an ongoing induction course for the new arrivals on Monday.
Investigations showed that the target of the banks largely was to woo the lawmakers to open accounts with them.
Some of the smartly dressed marketers also offered loan opportunities they claimed their banks could guarantee with "friendly repayment terms."

Over 290 members of the House for example, are newcomers, out of the total of 360.
In the Senate, about 69 senators are also newcomers, out of 109.
Findings showed that the marketers started tracing the lawmakers since Sunday night when Senate President, David Mark, declared the induction programme open at the Transcorps Hotel, Abuja.
"They flooded the Congress Hall of the hotel Sunday night.
"They didn't give the lawmakers breathing space, as they offered all sorts of facilities (loans) and seeking to maintain their accounts," a senior legislative aide revealed on Monday.

A member of the House earns around N27.9m every quarter as official allowance.
Presiding officers and other principal officers receive higher figures.
This excludes a monthly salary of N1m.
Senators collect over N30m as quarterly allowance and receive higher salaries than their House counterparts.
It was gathered that the practice over time was for the banks to compete among themselves to attract as many of the lawmakers as possible to maintain the lawmakers' accounts.
"In the end, many lawmakers get loans in amounts ranging from N50m to upward of N200m.
"They will be here for four years and it is understandable that the banks see this as a window for quick returns," one National Assembly official disclosed.

However, further investigations indicated that there were several cases of lawmakers who failed to repay the loans before the expiration of their tenure, leading to disputes between the two sides.
In 2011, a particular new generation bank withheld the severance packages of many members and also seized their assets, owing to failure to meet up with their loan obligations.
One marketer, who gave her name simply as Elina, revealed that there was nothing wrong with seeking for "investment opportunities."
She argued that being new in Abuja, most of the members needed information on sources of funding to assist them in settling down for the business of legislation.
"We know how it is; there will be accommodation challenges.
"Some need funding for transportation even before they get their official votes for vehicles and other support services.
"So, the banks are there to provide these support services by way of funding," she added.

The National Assembly and its bureaucracy, including the National Assembly Service Commission, has a total budget of N120bn this year.
The figure was a drop from the N150bn it had enjoyed since 2007.

The Federal Government has named major streets in Abuja after some eminent Nigerians and accomplished Africans, with the soon-to-be inaugurated Inner Southern Expressway named after President Goodluck Jonathan.

The decision is coming barely one month to the end of Jonathan's administration, when a new President, Muhammadu Buhari, would be inaugurated.

The longest Wuye District Boulevard Express Road measuring 1,730 metres was named after former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Another major road in the same district was named after Vice President Namadi Sambo.

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed, according to a statement issued on Monday night by his Special Assistant (Media), Mr. Nosike Ogbuenyi, made the announcement during the FCT Executive Committee meeting held at his official residence in Life Camp, Gwarinpa.

The major streets named after the eminent personalities also include Asokoro Extension, Guzape, Wupa, Wuye and Maitama Extension districts as well as expressways and roads.

Battle For Next Reps Speaker In Top Gear As Gbajabiamila, Others Intensify Lobbying

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Some front runners for the position of the Speaker of the 8th House of Representatives intensified campaign for support on Monday in Abuja as newly-elected members arrived in the city for their induction programme.
Among the 360 members of the House to be inaugurated on June 6 are over 290 newcomers, the majority of who will determine the successor to the outgoing Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal.
According to a report by PUNCH, findings have showed that the newcomers started arriving in Abuja on Saturday and checked in at the Transcorps Hotel.
On Sunday, which was the inaugural night of the induction programme, it was gathered that the front runners started inviting the new lawmakers for meetings.
The House Minority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila; the Chairman, Committee on House Services, Mr. Yakubu Dogara; and a member of the House Committee on Public Accounts, Mr. Pally Iriase, reportedly moved in to market their candidature.
Similarly, the Chairman, House Committee on Finance, Mr. Abdulmumin Jibrin, was also said to have formally addressed "a letter of intention" to vie for the speakership to all new and returning members.
"Extensive lobbying has been going on since Sunday night. There have been visits to the rooms of some members for campaign,"a National Assembly aide informed disclosed on Monday.
Dogara, Gbajabiamila and Jibrin allegedly held meetings with separate groups inside the Congress Hall of Transcorps Hotel on Sunday night.
On Monday, Iriase also stormed the International Conference Centre, the second venue of the induction course to canvass support.
Soon after he arrived, Dogara too was seen hurrying into the venue, slowing down briefly to hold side meetings with some members before he entered the auditorium.
Although, the All Progressives Congress had yet to make a categorical statement on the zoning of key political offices like the Senate President and the Speaker, it was learnt that the " understanding'' was to zone the seat of Speaker to the South-West.
Gbajabiamila is the key runner from the zone.

But, Dogara, Iriase and Jibrin were said to continue to canvass support because any of the three could likely become the deputy Speaker.
Gbajabiamila however when called to confirm whether the position had been zoned to the South-West where he hails from, he parried the question.
When asked whether it was now time to round off discussions with members, he simply replied, "We are here, we are here; we are working."
However, he was seen arriving the venue of the programme in company with Tambuwal on Monday, waving at members.
On his own part, Iriase simply smiled and said he remained in the race.
But speaking at the same venue, the Peoples Democratic Party caucus of the House restated its earlier stance that the House would elect a Speaker for itself and not a political party.
The Deputy House Majority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, said lawmakers were not bothered by any zoning formula adopted by the APC, as they would "in keeping with practice,'' elect their Speaker.
He added, "The 1999 Constitution is very clear on this matter. Go and read Section 50 (b) of the constitution; it says 'members shall elect from among themselves a Speaker.' It does not say a political party shall appoint a Speaker for the House.
"It implies that any member deemed competent and qualified to be Speaker will be elected by members.''
When asked whether such a member could be Leo Ogor or any other PDP member, he said "no comments" and rushed out of the ICC.

If this report coming from Maxnaija.com is to be believed, then President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is set to assume the position of a global crises envoy with the United Nations (UN).
The role is similar to that of former British prime minister, Tony Blair, who was appointed the Middle East envoy for the United Nations after leaving office.
President Jonathan on this appointment would be the first African former head of state to be assigned such a role and will oversee UN affairs on the African continent.
Jonathan, 57, holds a Bsc. in Zoology, an Msc. in Hydrobiology and Fisheries and a PhD in Zoology, all from the University of Port Harcourt.
Prior to his role as President, he served as the governor of Bayelsa state from 2005 to 2007 and as vice president of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010.
