Two students who are graduating with first class honours are among 11, 458 graduands to be decorated on March 21 when Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) holds its 16th convocation at its permanent site, Agbani.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Cyprain Onyeji, who briefed newsmen on the convocation ceremony, said 10,920 graduands would be presented with the first degree, 109 postgraduate diploma, 414 Masters, and 15 Ph.D. certificates.

He noted that through the collaborative efforts and commitment of the teaching and non-teaching staff, the institution was able to ensure that the school calendar runs its normal course.

Professor Onyeji expressed satisfaction that within the past 34 years of its existence, ESUT had distinguished itself as a pre-eminent university for scientific and technological studies and high-level research. He said there had been a remarkable improvement on the overall state of the university since the last convocation. "We are happy that the university has recorded significant progress in the areas of pursuit of academic excellence, staff development and welfare, students' welfare and discipline, infrastructure development as well as other modalities in tandem with quality management of the university," he said.

The vice chancellor stated that 17 building projects, including hostels, faculty buildings, library complex, annexes to existing buildings, blocks of staff offices, lecture theatres, laboratories, recreational facilities and other facilities, were under various stages of completion.

He, however, listed the challenges facing the institution as physical infrastructure inadequate in municipal and support services and funding for recruitment of more academic staff for some academic programmes with glaring deficiency in staff strength.

While appreciating the support of the state government which he said is not enough as government alone cannot effectively fund tertiary education the vice chancellor said the university will continue to strive to increase its internally generated revenue just as he called on friends of the university to come to its aid.

Electricity Supply To Be Stable in Ten Weeks -PDP

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Ahead of the March 28 and April 11 elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  and All Progressives Congress (APC) have offered timelines during which they intend to bring about significant improvement in electricity supply to Nigerian homes.

While PDP said Nigerians should expected at least 10 hours stable electricity supply within next 10 weeks, APC on its part promised that the power sector it would record a significant improvement within six months if elected into office.
The representative of both parties faced each during a debate organised by the Center for Democratic and Development (CDD) and OSIWA in Abuja yesterday.

Speaking on behalf of the APC, the party's National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji  Lai Mohamned, said the opposition party intends to hold a roundtable meeting with all the stakeholders in the power sector, including the present private operators to see how address the immediate challenges facing the sector.

He also said the party would immediately undertake the execution of gas pipelines and the grid expansion projects with a view to putting the sector on the path of sustainable growth and stability.
"We will complete grid facilities and commence the construction of new ones.  He said government should not abandon its role as the facilitator of the development of the sector even after privatization. Within six months Nigeria will notice significant improvement in power supply. We are going to take steps to improve on the gas supply to generating stations," he said.

On the issue use of coal to produce cheap electricity, Mohammed said the party is in agreement with PDP that the initiative to explore coal for power generation should be encouraged.

He, however, restated the party's accusation that the PDP administration mismanaged the N12 billion gas infrastructure fund meant to build the gas pipeline facilities which has resulted in the gas supply shortfall.‎
"APC will work with the present  private operators in the power sector. We will sit down with them and discuss on the way forward."

APC queried the rationale for awarding N9billion contract to ethnic militias who lack the wherewithal to do the job rather than resorting to INVESTMENT in technology-driven methods of pipeline protection.

On its part, the PDP represented by the Chairman of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi and Dr. Okey Ikechukwu promised that Nigerians should expect 10 hours steady power supply in 10 weeks time.

While explaining federal government interventions in the sector, Amadi said the administration has thought it wise to privatise the power sector and hand over to the private sector to operate in order to bring in efficiency and rake in more INVESTMENT.

He said presently, the national grid had the capacity to evacuate only 5,000mega watts, adding that the government was currently working to expand the grid network capacity.

He also lamented the impact of vandalisation of gas pipeline facilities which to a great extent has been responsible for the disruptions witnessed in the sector.
He explained that an initiative is been pursued to partner with communities to help protect the pipeline facilities,
"Today we produce about 5,000 mega watts. But there is the need to explore more avenues for attracting more INVESTMENTS into the sector," he said.

Ikechukwu said a lot of progress had been made in the reform of the power sector since the present administration came into office, adding that there was every indication that within the timeline of 10 weeks from now, the sector would witness stable power supply which will ultimately drive importers of generators out of business.

An independent national opinion poll carried out around the country by a United Kingdom-based firm Kevin, Charlyn and Kimberly has put President Goodluck Jonathan ahead his All Progressive Congress (APC)'s presidential candidate General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), with a margin of 13 percent.

The aggregate analysis showed 77 percent for Dr. Jonathan while Buhari scored 27 percent from over 30,000 respondents interviewed in the survey.

Addressing a cross section of the media in Abuja, Vice President of the firm Mr. Vince Onyekwelu, said the results were collated from a monkey survey sample of 28,000 respondents, 2000 respondents from Facebook and Twitter, and another 300 respondents from face-to-face contacts and telephone interviews.

Said Onyekwelu: "Different platforms were used and one was the survey monkey which is robust for academic research and also Facebook, Twitter and Face-Face discussion. The monkey survey was 28,000, Facebook and Twitters were 1000 each and face to face discussion was 300.

Insisting on the credibility of the poll based on what he described as the rigorous methodology used, he added: "The information is based on the perception of what people have, I don't know those people, the research was based on several dynamics."

According to the firm, the respondents considered the war on terror as one of the major determinants on the forthcoming election.‎

Nigeria is aspiring to be a failed state, military wants to grab power -Wole Soyinka Raises Alarm

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has raised the alarm that "illegal, sinister and power-grabbers" are bent on scuttling the country's current democratic process.

The power-grabbers, according to him, are the ones pushing for the imposition of interim government on the country.

He said during an interview with SaharaTV, a United States-based online broadcast station operated by SaharaReporters, that what he was sure of, was that President Goodluck Jonathan knew such people.

The 80-year-old playwright, who on   Wednesday told a German radio station, Deutsche Welle, that he feared there were "clear indications of a military intervention," said with the current political situation     and the insurgency in the North-East, Nigeria was facing its most dangerous period.

He said in spite of the challenges, what bothered him most, was the plot by some people to take over the rein of the country illegally.

Soyinka said, "This is what bothers me deeply: There are people who see this as an opportunity for their own political and sinister activities in the country.                        Therefore, we are not even united against the dangerous enemy of the country. The elections themselves are being used as an opportunity of sowing bitter seed of discord and for power-grabbing.‎
"It is now an established fact that there had been moves towards scuttling the democratic process by instituting a so-called interim government. But the proof is there of some participants in meetings for the formation of an interim government. Why form an interim government when there is an electoral process?

The Nobel laureate stated that he spoke personally with the President to ascertain his involvement in the plot to foist an interim government on Nigerians.
"I went to President Jonathan and I asked him, and he was to all appearances outraged by the very suggestion. I remember he used an expression, 'If such a thing is going on it is outside my wish or my will. After I have been elected by the entire nation, isn't being the head of an interim government a demotion and an undignifying position?'" Soyinka said.
"Maybe there are forces in operation in this nation during this very critical period about which he knows of that is the answer which I could make and it is up to him to sort himself out in contending with these illegal forces," the literary icon said.

Soyinka therefore called on Nigerians not to be complacent about the current political situation in the country.

He said, "I believe that these elections, going by his (Jonathan) body language… it is very difficult to penetrate truthfully and deeply into the minds of politicians… going by his body language, I think Jonathan has no intention of scuttling the elections.
"In other words, the elections would take place but what kind of elections would we have? And what might be the aftermath of the elections? He has repeatedly said, 'I'm going back to Otuoke if I lose the election.' I just hope we don't wake up one day with our complacent attitude and find out that we, as a people, have been overthrown by very sinister, illegal and useless forces."

He had told Deutsche Welle on Wednesday   that   "ex-military officers and security officers were trying to push aside the political contestants and use the unrest (in the North-East) as an excuse to establish an interim government.

Soyinka explained that "the nature of the interim government wants to pretend it's not really a military intervention."

He   added that   "a few political leaders, well-known civilians, want to give the veneer of civilian structure, but basically it's a kind of political intervention."

The Nobel laureate, who stated that Nigeria "is aspiring very hard to become a failed state," also lamented the increasingly aggressive direction the election campaign in Nigeria was taking.

Soyinka told DW that while he doesn't support the opposition's move to file criminal charges against Mrs. Patience Jonathan at the International Criminal Court, her comments should be checked.

8 Days To Presidential Polls! ACHIEVING A CRISES FREE 2015 GENERAL ELECTION

BY MOSES ADEYEMI

Nigeria popularly known as the giant of Africa have been preparing for a while now the presidential and governorship elections to decide who will chair the affairs of the country for the next four years, but one of the notable factors is that the election is going more tensed  and violence is now the order of the day.

As it stands now there is a struggle for power between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), which has been a fierce contest and the country has recorded pre-election violence and the funniest thing is that there might be more violence if  certain measures are not put in place.

Although the issue of the dreadful Boko Haram insurgency has been put in control to an extent but they might still be a threat to Nigeria if they are not totally wiped off before the elections.

The federal government need to do more work to have a credible 2015 election like strengthening  its security apparatus; working  closely with relevant state governments toward achieving a better election without violence and ensuring elections are held in all states.

We have seen all political parties sign different memoranda of non violence but they really need to demonstrate it in there act and security men should also do there best by proving they don't belong to any party or do not support any party , if we are all going to have a good and credible election.‎

The 2022 World Cup final in Qatar will take place on December 18, Fifa's Executive Committee has confirmed.

Concerns over the intense summer heat in the Arab nation forced the world governing body to set up a task force looking into a revised schedule, moving the tournament away from its traditional June- July time slot.

But while the task force suggested a final on December 23, the ExCo has announced that the showpiece will take place five days earlier to fall in line with Fifa president Sepp Blatter's suggestion.
"The World Cup will not go on until the 23rd, definitely not, we have to stop at the 18th," Blatter said at February's International Football Association Board AGM. "I am against going to the 23rd.

FIFA also confirmed it is committed to fitting the tournament into a 28-day format as opposed to the standard 31-32 day duration in order to cause as little disruption as possible to domestic schedules.
"The Executive Committee today confirmed that the 2022 Fifa World Cup will be staged in November/December with the final to be on December 18, 2022, Qatar's National Day," said a Fifa statement.
"In principle, it was agreed that the tournament should be played over a reduced timeframe, for instance 28 days.
"The working group for the international match calendar will meet in due course to finalise the international match calendar for the 2019-2022 cycle."

In his words, he said,‎
"The idea of postponement was brought by the ministry and after consultations with the council, we decided to shift it.
"There are some concerns as to whether parents will leave their children in schools with the uncertainties ahead of the elections.
" Mustapha said it would be better to write the exam in a relaxed atmosphere after the elections.

Mr Benjamin Ikpegbu, who is a parent and has a kid writing the examination said the candidates for common entrance were still very young children who should not write examination in a tensed atmosphere.

Cast Your Vote And Go Home, Do Not Bother Protecting Your Votes -Police IG

Suleiman Abba, The Inspector General of Police on Thursday urged Nigerians to go home and not stay back to protect their votes at the polling booths come April 11.

Abba disclosed this during a briefing organised by INEC with accredited observers for the 2015 general election. He said enough police officers will be deployed around polling booths across the country to protect the votes of Nigerian.

In his words, he said, ‎
"Two to three police officers will be attached to each polling unit, and we would provide more officers for the collation centres and for the managers of the elections"
"We will go on to protect the electorate. Every eligible voter should feel safe enough to cast his votes. We will be there to protect the votes and make sure no one disrupts the process."
"Cast your votes and go and cool down. If you remain there, there is likelihood that you will commit an offence.
"Asking voters to wait and protect their votes implies taking the law into their own hands. That is unacceptable."

He also called on political parties to respect the electoral act, which states that only one agent is allowed in a polling unit. Abba further urged those vying for electoral position to either accept the results when announced or seek redress at the judicial court of law.

He warned that violence and thuggery ‎would not be condoned during or after the elections, adding that the police force will ensure it apprehends and prosecute perpetrators.
