50 Shades Of F**kery: Fifty Shades Of Grey Movie Review By @Ms_Nayomi (18+)

No comments :

After so much hype about the movie, I was lured into reading all three series of the book, '50 shades of grey', by my ex who had not only read the books but also seen the stage show on Broadway. Finally the movie is released and I run to the theatre like a fat kid hungry for ice-cream. I commend the lovely job Sam Taylor-Johnson (the movie director), did with the book, as transforming a best-seller to the big screen is a huge gap to fill. Despite cutting off some scenes, there was smooth flow and transition between character dialogues and scenes, for a critic like myself who has read the book, my expectation for the movie was super high and I would say even if it wasn't met, Taylor came pretty close.

Most people who have read the book or seen the movie seem to focus more on the kinky, s3xual and graphic aspect of the story. Yes 50 shades is graphic, the novel alone tends to drive your imagination wild! I mean I found that I began to question myself how far I would go in the bedroom if I ever fell in love with a man like Grey. 50 shades is a fantasy, an er•tica and a lot of women have crazy fantasies which their overprized dignity prevents them from sharing/experiencing with their partners. And fantasies definitely come in thousands of shades of grey…50 is just mentioning a few.
However, this has not stopped me from being aware of the story behind the graphics, "a naïve college girl named Anastasia Steele (played by Dakota Johnson) met a ridiculously handsome billionaire, Christian Grey (played by Jamie Dornan) with intimacy issues. Greys issue can be attributed to his childhood experience, to sum it up, being abused as a child, both physically and s3xually. Grey meets Anastasia and is smitten by her looks, spoils her with luxurious gifts and presents his proposal about her being his submissive. Ana like any other girl would be was curious and mesmerised by Greys poise, eloquence, and handsomeness. She is torn between wanting a relationship with grey despite how ridiculous being a submissive is, or living life wondering what if.

Could Dornan and Dakota have done a better job playing Grey and Ana? Would the movie have had a better twist if a different actor and actress were used? Yes and Yes. The chemistry between Dornan and Dakota was questionable, and Dornan's ability to ooze s3xual aura could be better. I did find that the book portrayed Ana as one who blamed her inner-goddess for her s3xual urges around Grey, but Ana in the movie pretty much seemed to me like she was responsible for her decisions. Nonetheless, the soundtrack pretty much made up for the flaws of the movie, it added to the s3xual intensity and mood, lighting was great and the close-ups and wide shots framing of the movie also helped set the mood.
In all, Johnson has done a great job bringing 50 shades to the screen after a lot of criticism from some readers of the book who had questioned how such book could get transformed to a movie. His choices on scenes to cut off, use of detailed and eloquent set (furniture's), choice of soundtrack and the point to abruptly stop the movie (yes the end was abrupt, the lady in front of me at the theatre was about to start a fight), was all just enough to make the movie acceptable to the viewers while leaving them hungry…even begging for the other two parts to be released sooner than valentine's day next year.

Should you see the movie? Most definitely! Why? Try to enjoy the s3xual scenes, but I leave you with these questions as you do, "how far are you willing to go for the one you love? What would you do if you were Ana? And for the lovely guys out there, would you bend your rules if you found the one?"

My Naija people, sorry you can't see the movie in theatres, in my opinion, the pirated copy will not do the movie justice. Cheers to 50 shades of f**kery!! Much love, Mimi!

A strange thing happended in Ilawe-Ekiti, Ekiti South-West Local Government Area of Ekiti State, where some people who had slaughtered a goat for a burial were shocked to find some pieces of coins, keys, padlocks, raw gold and wedding ring among others inside the goat after cutting its belly. The SUN reports:

The strange happening stirred up confusion and controversy as those who claimed they saw it happened, insisted it was true, while cynics wondered how the claim could be true. They were nevertheless enthralled by a daunting evidence of blood stained pieces of raw gold presented by the eyewitnesses.

According to residents, many of whom spoke on condition of anonymity, the development disrupted the ceremony, as guests for whom the goat was slaughtered went back to their homes in fear and embarrassment. The goat owned by a yet-to-be identified old woman who had given it out to a friend.

The woman whom the goat was given, it was gathered, had reared it for several years after which it did not reproduce. She, however, got tired of rearing the goat and sold it to the people who needed it for the ceremony.

Christ Embassy Ignores Anita Oyakhilomhe's Birthday...which used to be carnival-like

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
Many new media users might have awoken today just to realise that they did not felicitate with Pastor Anita, estranged wife of the President of the Believers' Love World Inc. (aka the Christ Embassy), Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, on her birthday.

Anita, who has filed a divorce suit against her husband, marked her birthday on Thursday. But the celebration was devoid of the usual social media hoopla that accompanied it the previous years.

Google, as they say, has an answer for every question. But one line the search engine could not capture on Thursday was Chris' birthday message to Anita, the woman he had spent the last 24 years with.

Asked for a clue to what the cleric said to his wife on Thursday, the search engine result page displayed links of stories of the divorce case and other matters that involved the church. There was also much on the Oyakhilomes' good old days.

But for a few posts on Nairaland, there was almost no mention of Anita's birthday which, in previous years, had received a dedicated programme where members of the church showered her with praises and love.

In 2012, an event was organised for her where different groups performed in songs and dance. Three years after the classic event, YouTube still hosts a video recording entitled, We See God in You, a song composed by one ChristianK to honour Anita.

This was an atmosphere that was completely missing in Anita's life on Thursday. Otherwise, its effort did not reflect in the church members' social media engagements.

Even the UK office of the church might have celebrated offline, as there was no message attributed to its members in any of the social media channels and blogs.

Importantly, there was also no word from Chris, just as there was none from the children, Sharon and Charlyn.

On the website, the celebrant did not get a mention from the Christ Embassy family she meant so much to. The news and event section of the church's website had nothing to indicate that the church had any programme lined up to celebrate with Anita, a woman many members had fondly referred to as the first lady of the Believers Love Word.

Interestingly, Sinach, the lead singer of the Christ Embassy choir, did tweet, quoting from the Rhapsody of Reality, a devotional pamphlet that was co-authored by Anita alongside her husband.

"Never allow the challenges you face to overwhelm you. Whatever challenges you might be facing today are (sic) what you have been built, prepared and fashioned for," she urged her fans.‎
"None of us is given more than he or she can handle: "…God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able… Rather than focus on the trouble, act on the word, and you will surely have a testimony," Sinach counselled.

The gospel singer who had enjoyed a robust relationship with Anita did not make any reference to the birthday, neither did dozens of the church members who responded to the message that was also shared on her Facebook page.

The webpage of the Christ Embassy Bermondsey, the United Kingdom, which displays the photograph of Chris on its profile page, was also quiet on Anita's celebration as of Thursday.

On Nairaland forum, one Joagbaje commended Anita for "blessing the world," while wishing her happy birthday. He claimed that online media had attempted to break up her union with Chris but failed.

Also commenting, one Nuella described the celebrating pastor as lovely and wonderful. She said the church and, indeed, the Christian community, would continue to appreciate her.

Anita had filed a case with suit no FD14D01650 at the Divorce Section A of the Central Family Court, London, asking for the dissolution of her 24-year marriage to Chris.

A middle-aged palm tree harvester, George Maduabuchi, from Owerrinta in the Isiala-Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State is in the police net for allegedly selling his 14-month-old son for N300,000.

The father of four was said to have connived with another suspect, Obinna Erondu, now at large, to perpetrate the act.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joshak Habila, who paraded the suspect along with other suspected criminals on Thursday, said, "Luck ran out on Maduabuchi when the wife alerted the police on his questionable role when the baby fell ill and he took him out and did not return with him."

But the suspect told our correspondent that he did not sell his son, but only took him to a herbalist when he took ill.

He said, "The herbalist gave me money and told me that he could not heal the baby. I therefore left the baby in the herbalist's home."

But his explanation was countered by his wife, Eberechi, who said he took their son, who had a cough to the said herbalist, but instead of returning with the baby, rather came back with bundles of money.

She said, "When I demanded explanations on the whereabouts of our son, he could not offer any convincing answer."

The wife, who is also pregnant, said she raised the alarm, which attracted neighbours who helped to arrest the husband.

The neighbours subsequently alerted the police, who picked up the husband who later led the police to the herbalist's house at Owerrinta where the boy was recovered .

Fresh Crisis Hit Ijora, Lagos As Rival Cults Clash...aftermath of notorious tout's murder

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
There was confusion on Thursday at the Seven-Up bus stop, in the Ijora area of Lagos State, after suspected hoodlums clashed, shutting down business activities in the community.
It was gathered that the fight began on Wednesday evening after a 24-year-old man identified as Sodiq, a.k.a Always, was stabbed to death.‎
He was said to be a truck loader in the Ijora area.

Our correspondent, who visited the scene of the incident on Thursday, learnt that Sodiq was going to see a friend who owed him money, when he was attacked by a six-man gang and killed.

A resident, George Jumbo, told our correspondent that the deceased was a member of the Oju Ina gang and was killed by rival cultists from a neighbouring street.
He said, "It was around 6.30pm. Always (Sodiq) was going to collect money from a friend when he was cornered by the gang. They had been monitoring his movement. He was caught unawares.
"The cultists surrounded him and stabbed him in the chest and by the side of his body. He died on the spot."

Another resident, who claimed to know the deceased, Moses Kolawole, explained that Sodiq's friends carried his corpse, but later released it to the police after the intervention of a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.
"His friends took his corpse from the spot he was killed and brought it to a place we call Janjara in the community.
"Late that night, the police came and demanded his corpse, and the boys refused. But one of us, Taranta, asked the boys to release his body to the police," he said.
It was learnt that after releasing the corpse, boys from Oju Ina went on rampage.

A cab driver, Ahmed Aweda, said he was seated in the park when the area boys struck and he fled along with his colleagues.
He said, "I don't know exactly what happened or what led to the clash which began yesterday (Wednesday) after I heard somebody was killed. The area boys that evening were wielding guns and cutlasses and we all took to our heels.
"This morning again, around 10, the hoodlums pursued one another into the Badia area and we all lost our peace. The police later came to disperse them."

A motorcyclist, Tajudeen Alao, said the hoodlums used the opportunity of the chaos to steal and rob passersby.
He said, "The government knows what to do if they want to bring about peace. The politicians are the ones giving these boys firearms, or how can one explain how a jobless and homeless area boy would come about a gun?"

The traditional ruler of the Ijora community, Oba Fatai Aromire, when contacted, said he was not aware of the development.

But the Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident.
"Sodiq was stabbed to death and we have commenced investigation. We cannot categorically say why he was killed, but we are working to get to the roots of the matter," he said.

President Jonathan Storm Mubi, Baga Fully Kitted In Military Gear...assures soldiers of FG support

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday made a surprise visit to some territories recently recovered from members of the Boko Haram sect by the Nigerian troops in Adamawa and Borno states.

The Presidency in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, described the visit, that took Jonathan to Mubi in Adamawa State and Baga in Borno State among others, as an on-the-spot assessment of efforts of the military and morale booster for the troops.

According to Abati, in the two towns recently recovered, Jonathan, who was dressed in full military camouflage, applauded the Nigerian troops for proving their mettle once again through the rapid recapture of the territories formerly held by insurgents in the country's north-eastern states.

The presidential spokesman quoted Jonathan as telling the officers and men of the Nigerian Army in both towns that he and all Nigerians were very proud of the bravery, competence and patriotism with which they were now undertaking operations to expel the insurgents from all parts of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

He further quoted the President as saying that with their recent successes, which had overwhelmingly turned the tide against Boko Haram, the Nigerian military had proven beyond any doubt that it remained fully capable of defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria.

He added that Jonathan also told them that their recent victories against Boko Haram had also proven conclusively that all those, within and outside the country, who cast aspersions on Nigerian soldiers and questioned their ability and willingness to overcome the insurgents were misinformed and wrong.

The statement read in part, "President Jonathan, who was accompanied on the trip by the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki and all the Service Chiefs, assured the troops that the Federal Government will ensure that they receive all the equipment and logistics they require to complete the ongoing mission to reassert the government's effective control over all the areas formerly held by Boko Haram.

"The President promised the soldiers that all issues pertaining to their welfare will be properly and expeditiously addressed.

"He assured them that they will be duly rewarded for their bravery and patriotic service to the nation at the successful conclusion of ongoing operations against Boko Haram.

"Families of soldiers who have sadly lost their lives in battles against Boko Haram will also be well provided for, the President further assured the troops."

Abati said the excited soldiers responded to the President's address with chants of "Never Again" and assured him that insurgents and terrorists will never again be allowed to take and hold any Nigerian territory.

He said while in Mubi, Jonathan, accompanied by the Governor of Adamawa State, Mr. Bala Ngilari, and the Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Bonni Haruna, paid a courtesy call on the Emir, Alhaji Isa Ahmadu.

He further quoted the President as assuring the Emir that the Federal Government will do all within its powers to ensure that normalcy was speedily returned to Mubi and other towns and settlements recently recaptured from Boko Haram to enable displaced persons to return to their homes in the shortest possible time.

He said Jonathan also undertook an aerial inspection of other towns and areas recently recaptured from Boko Haram including Monguno.

Before returning to Abuja, Abati added that the President met and conferred with the Borno State Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, in Maiduguri.

It will be recalled that Jonathan had on January 15 paid a similar surprise visit to Maiduguri, Borno State believed to be the stronghold of the sect.

Scores killed as suicide bomber hits Borno bus station

A suicide bomber blew himself up at a crowded bus station in Biu, in Borno state, on Thursday, while a second bomber was shot dead before he could detonate his explosives, AFP has reported.

Kyari, a civilian vigilante, said "at least 18 people, including three women, died... and several others were injured" although there was no immediate corroboration of that death toll.

The attack happened after two men arrived the Tashar Gandu motor park on the edge of the town in Borno state, where one detonated his explosives among passengers and vendors, onlookers said.

The suicide bombing is the second this week, after 34 people were killed in a blast at a bus station in the city of Kano, on Tuesday. The death toll was revised upwards from the initial estimate of 10.

Another blast hours earlier, also at a bus station, killed 17 in the commercial capital of Yobe state, Potiskum, but it was not confirmed as a suicide attack.

No group has claimed responsibility for either bombing but Boko Haram has repeatedly targeted both places, as well as Biu.

On February 18, 36 people were killed when assailants in a motorised rickshaw detonated explosies at Yarmakumi village near Biu, with most of the victims child vendors and beggars.

The attacks again underscore the threat posed by Boko Haram, which experts say may resort to such tactics as they are pushed out of captured territory in the northeast by a multi-national military force.

The two men in the latest attack pretended to be traders leaving Biu after business at the main market, which takes place every Thursday and Sunday, said Kyari.
"The two men came as if they were travellers and one of them detonated his explosives in the midst of travellers and petty traders," the vigilante added.
"But the second man was shot and killed by soldiers before he could pull the trigger."

Resident Ali Dauda said the scene was cordoned off by soldiers and vigilantes, while they waited the arrival of the police bomb squad to defuse the unexploded explosives on the second attacker.
"The first bomber succeeded in detonating his explosives, which caused many casualties, but the second bomber was killed and his body is still lying at the scene with the explosives on it," he added.

Open Letter To The Incoming President By Azeez Rasheed Olawale

A PAGE OPINED TO THE INCOMING PRESIDENT -AZEEZ RASHEED OLAWALE
"The tragedy of Africa is that Africans are in the business of canonizing thieves and demonizing its saints." - Prof. Lumumba.

I keep reflecting on the Marxism classes we had during my undergraduate days in the university, where we were taught that class and class antagonism will continue in the society, unless the have-nots, the de-classed and the lumpen-proletariat stands  up to liberate themselves from the shackles and manacles of the oppressors before they can be given freedom. I think we need a mind orientation that revolution we think is not possible looms around the corner, because our dear country has gone to sleep.
I believe what our leaders think is that the revolutionary status, and the confidence with which the masses have devoted themselves, has suffered a serious amazement. Don't forget the words of Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso who posited that "you cannot carry out fundamental change without a certain amount of madness". Ha ha ha, leaders beware the followers are going gaga.
Urban violence might be the order of the day because the youths are closer to the people and understands how the political money is spent. Samuel P. Huntington argues that, as societies modernize, they become more complex and disordered. If the process of social modernization that produces this disorder is not matched by a process of political and institutional modernization, a process which produces political institutions capable of managing the stress of modernization, the result may be violence. Mr Incoming president, you must not sit on a keg of gun-powder.
The youths are not engaged in this modernized era where social security reimbursement ought to be filling the unemployment lacuna. Mr incoming president, you have visited the European countries and you know what is obtainable there. See the Fulgencio Batista regime in Cuba, that was cut-short by Che Guavera, Fidel Castro et' al in the 1950s, and the Arab spring will be a good illustration.
We are not ripe for a revolution but a mutation is imminent at least we want a prosperous economy devoid of hardship and suffering. Mr incoming president, the future and hope of the people lies in your capacity and capability of harnessing all necessary resources for the development of the Nigerian state.
That's my advice oooooo.

MDGs, Water and a Dying Nation By Sulaimon Mojeed-Sanni

This year marks the end of the current international development agenda reached in year 2000, centred on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs encapsulate eight globally agreed goals in the areas of poverty alleviation, education, gender equality and empowerment of women, child and maternal health, environmental sustainability, reducing HIV/AIDS and communicable diseases, and building a global partnership for development.

For Nigeria, it has been 15 years of motion without movement. Based on perceivable scenarios, Nigeria would not achieve any of the goals. In 2013, when the team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) visited the Office of Senior Special Assistant to the President on Millennium Development Goals (OSSAP-MDGs) to find out the country's performance track towards achieving the MDGs, Dr. Precious Gbeneol, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Millennium Development Goals, disclosed that the three tiers of government spends about N3 trillion annually as against the total sum of N4.3 trillion required to achieve the MDGs targets before the 2015 deadline. In a way, the SSA was preparing Nigerians mind that the lacuna of funding would be the albatross to achieving the MDGs.

From the goal one of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger to goal eight of developing global partnership for development, Nigeria, despite her natural resources, human capital and ecological advantages remains in dire need. On the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Human Development Index report of 2013, Nigeria was categorised as one of the African countries not recording remarkable improvement. According to the report, Nigeria was ranked amongst countries with low development index at 153 out of 186 countries that were ranked.

Life expectancy in Nigeria is placed at 52 years old while other health indicators reveal that only 1.9 per cent of the nation's budget is expended on health. The report asserts that 68.0 per cent of Nigerians are living below $1.25 daily while adult illiteracy rate for adult (both sexes) is 61.3 per cent. Based on UNICEF data, every single day, Nigeria loses about 2,300 under-five year olds and 145 women of childbearing age. This makes the country the second largest contributor to the under–five and maternal mortality rate in the world. It is observed that preventable or treatable infectious diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea, measles and HIV/AIDS account for more than 70 per cent of the estimated one million under-five deaths in Nigeria. To crown it, the MO Ibrahim Index for African Governance,  2013 rated Nigeria 41st out of 52 African countries. What this meant is that government impact minimally in the life of the citizens. As at today, one Dollar change N208 at Bureau De Change and with Nigeria's monolithic crude oil at its lowest, corruption remaining endemic, there arises pressure in meeting basic social needs. Even water a supposedly common commodity acclaimed by late Afrobeat Legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti as having "no enemy", in our ensuing failed state cannot be made available to all. The foregoing presents the case of a nation losing its soul.

While a Millennium Development Goals Report in 2012, reported that 783 million people, or 11 per cent of the global population, remain without access to an improved source of drinking water. A good number of the figure not covered lives in Africa and Nigeria. The 2012 report shows that 89 per cent of the world's population was using improved drinking water sources, up from 76 per cent in 1990 and assumed that if the trends continue, 92 per cent of the global population will be covered by 2015. But the African predicament might obstruct the target, many in sub-Sahara Africa do not have access to clean water, the Nigeria case is even more terrifying. According to Water and Sanitation Media Network," 35 million Nigerians still defecate in the open; about 90 million are without access to safe drinking water, and 130,000 under-five Nigerian children die annually from preventable water borne diseases."

Between 2011 and now, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) office model costing says $2.5 billion (about N375 billion) is needed to meet the nation's water and sanitation targets, the Federal government noted that an extra N200 billion is further required to provide additional development in Dams with hydropower components amongst others within same period. When the idea was presented in 2011, the federal government planned to fund the water roadmap via direct public and private sector financing, in which, budgetary appropriation as well as cost sharing arrangements with states, local councils and communities would be the public proposed fund-raising approach, while private funding will be accessed via multilateral credit, loans and internally generated revenue. That was the last heard of the water road map.

One of the most important milestones of world's effort in making water available to all was the recognition in July 2010 by the United Nations General Assembly of the human right to water and sanitation. The Assembly recognised the right of every human being to have access to sufficient water for personal and domestic uses (between 50 and 100 litres of water per person, per day), which must be safe, acceptable and affordable (water costs should not exceed 3 per cent of household income), and physically accessible (the water source has to be within 1,000 metres of the home and collection time should not exceed 30 minutes). Going by the foregoing, it is criminal on the part of government not to make water available to all.

Despite this milestone, it is unfortunate to note that over 40 per cent of all the people in Sub-Saharan Africa are without improved drinking water and are not in any way poised to meet the MDGs' drinking water target this year. On February 12, 2015, I came across an article, "Vote For WASH", written by Greg Odogwu in The Punch Newspaper, where he noted that there are communities even in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, where human beings drink from the same river as animals. "They wash, bathe, and drink from the same lake where animals drink. And, side by side, they use the same "sanitary facility" with cattle. Their children fall sick of unknown illnesses and die. Yet, after every four years, politicians troop to these communities in their best campaign convoy with pomp and pageantry, making promises that will not be kept, until the next election when electioneering commences again." WASH is the generic acronym for Water Sanitation and Hygiene.

Early this year, Water Aid Nigeria and#Vote4WASH team commenced a social media campaign to #SaveKwalita community in Gwagwalada, Abuja. It is stated that in this community, there are about 600 children without water, sanitation, health centre and school. For those who do not know, Abuja is the Federal Capital of Nigeria, the biggest economy/giant of Africa.

It is not like the Nigerian state has been standing akimbo. In a report written by Ameto Akpe for Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting in 2012, she wrote that, "in January 2011, the federal government launched the water road-map, a blueprint that describes the government's objectives in developing the nation's water resources between 2011 and 2025. The plan includes the promise that 75 percent of Nigerians will have access to potable water by 2015, and 90 percent by 2020. With the launch of the plan, Jonathan's administration announced the availability of special intervention funds for several projects."

The proposed interventions were to be "drilling one motorized borehole in each of the 109 Senatorial Districts, rehabilitating 1,000 dysfunctional hand pump boreholes in 18 states, supplying and installing 10 special water treatment plants, and completing all abandoned urban/semi-urban water supply projects." Nearly 3 years on, one cannot categorically point at these projects as finished or abandoned. President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 declared, "no Nigerian child in the next few years shall trek long distances to carry water." As at the end of 2014, women and children in Langtang area of, Plateau  State, still travel long distance to get water. The Guardian Newspaper front page of February 17, had a picture of school age children with buckets looking for water in Gombe metropolis. Same scenario goes for many urban and rural communities within the country, the government of the day has failed in bring something as essential as water to us without sweat.

In a Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) of WHO/UNICEF for water and sanitation in 2012, it was estimated that based on progress in the past,  it would take 28 years for Nigeria to meet the target of making water available to 75 per cent of her citizens. The JMP reports show that between 1990 and 2010, there was only 11 percentage point increase in access to improved water supply in Nigeria. Currently, 58 percent of the country's 160 million people have access to potable water. The report noted that for the Nigerian government to deliver on its promise of 75 percent coverage by 2015, access must increase by 17 percentage points within the next three years.

But rather that improve, than country is in a fix. Last year, Water Aid Nigeria, an international non-governmental organization estimated that 112 million Nigerians lack access to basic sanitation and clear water. However, as against obvious reality, President Goodluck Jonathan during 2015 New Year broadcast asserted that access to potable water had improved from 57 per cent to 70 per cent, this presupposed government had been resilient in meeting its target, but budgetary allocations to water and sanitation sector have been fluctuating. In 2010, the federal government budgeted N112 billion for water and sanitation but by 2011, budgetary allocations had dropped to N62 billion. For 2012, the budget for water was only N39 billion, while in 2013, the budget for Water Resources grew to N84.2billion.

In a pocket handle book produced by the office of the Special Adviser to the President on Research, Documentation and Strategy, headed by Oronto Douglas, as at 2012, the achievement of the current administration in the Water Sector was listed as completing seven water projects, providing about 4.3 million Nigerians access to portable water; completion of Nine Dams in Akwa Ibom, Katsina, Enugu and Ondo states which increased the volume of Nigeria's water reserve by 422mcm. The same booklet pointed out that 4,000 jobs were created and as at 2012, 65.29% of the population had access to safe water, compared to 60% in 2011. And 375, 000 farmers now had access to irrigated land in 2012, up from 236,000 in 2011.

In 2014, when the same booklet would be reproduced ostensibly for 2015 elections, the only achievement recorded in the water sector was 422m cubic metres of water added to country's reservoir, the same one documented in 2012. For discerning minds, this is a clear case of deceit and blatant disregard for citizens who take time to check government files.

As the world prepares to transit to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), successor to the Millennium Development Goals, it is indeed a national embarrassment that Nigeria would be dragging the burden of the last 15 years into the new world development plan. Is it possible for Nigeria to halt implementation of SDGs post 2015 and concentrate on achieving the MDGs? Logically, how can Nigeria process to sustainable development when it cannot guarantee water for all? I grew up in an environment where students that fail repeat classes, collective promotion without disaggregation would be the bane of our attaining the goals as projected. The proponents of WASH are of the opinion that their campaign is not about vague promises of electricity, employment, etc but a very basic environmental and fundamental human rights of access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. That is not too much to ask a responsible and responsive government.

The nadir of Nigeria's lack of access to save water is the crude alternative of commercialised sachet water "pure water" Nigerians have found consolation in. Even though almost every sachet comes with purported NAFDAC number, many know how weak the inspection processes are and most "pure water" are the end product of impure environments. As a matter of urgency, NAFDAC needs to review its monitoring policy and make public, verifiable data on the number of companies it has approved to produce sachet water and their company addresses. Rwanda has been identified as one of the few African nations to have met the one of Millennium Development Goals target of halving the proportion of its people without access to sanitation. Key to Rwanda's success have been empowering communities, strong political will and accountability of service providers and governments, which have been held up as examples for other Sub-Saharan African nations as they confront their own challenges in water and sanitation.

One known feature of the Water resources sector in Nigeria is the litany of abandoned projects embroiled in corruption. It is opined that lack of accountability, transparency and clear management structure, are all albatross of making water available to all. Both the Executive and Legislatures (through their constituency projects), construct borehole that breaks down few days after   commissioning. There is hardly any maintenance structure to sustain these water projects. And for centrally controlled water works department, lack of efficiency has created economic deficits. There exist weak rate collection structures; thus, the water sector cannot be equitably relied upon to generate revenue. It is estimated that at least 90 percent of the country lacks a clear framework for the metering, billing or collection of water payments. Water bill payment defaults are estimated to have accrued to an astonishing debt of N1 billion. This sector alone, given the necessary political will, would have created ample employment opportunities and help the country in bridging the gap of unemployment.

At the 24th African Union Summit, which closed on 31 January, 2015, African Union's official launched the Kigali Action Plan of 50-million euro agreement to bring drinking water, basic toilets and hygiene promotion to 10 million Africans in 10 countries: Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Lesotho and Mauritania, all on the list of Least Developed Countries (LDCs), in the next 15 years. Even though Nigeria is not amongst the countries, an home-made plan needs to be developed to essentially reduce the number of people without access to water in Africa's biggest economy.

Dejan Lovren was the villain as Liverpool crashed out of the Europa League after an agonising penalty shootout defeat to Besiktas in Istanbul.

The Croatian blazed Liverpool's fifth penalty over the bar in a high-quality shootout to ensure that Slaven Bilic's men overturned a first-leg deficit to reach the last 16 Leading 1-0 from the first leg, Brendan Rodgers' men failed to find the away goal that would have ensured their progress but looked to heading for the round of 16 anyway until Tolgay Arslan superbly swept home in the 72nd minute.

Neither side could find a winner in extra-time and after a high-quality penalty shootout that saw the first nine spot-kicks converted, Lovren
blazed over to send the Turkish giants through.

Chelsea loanee Mohamed Salah struck the hammer blow as Fiorentina eliminated a lacklustre Tottenham from the Europa League in Florence.

With the tie marginally in Fiorentina's favour after a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane last week, Mauricio Pochettino's side were made to pay the price for their inability to score away from home.

Had Roberto Soldado not underhit a pass to Nacer Chadli with just Neto in their way during a quick first-half break, the Premier League
side may have been able to get on top in the tie.

However, Gomez's calm finish nine minutes into the second half gave the hosts a platform before Jan Vertonghen afforded Salah a golden
opportunity to double the lead 19 minutes from time.

After the Belgian failed to shepherd the ball to Hugo Lloris, Salah stole in and poked the ball home to effectively end the tie and see Vincenzo Montella's side into the next round.

Pochettino - who named leading scorer Harry Kane on the bench - will hope his side can make amends for a lacklustre showing when they take on Chelsea in Sunday's League Cup final at Wembley.

Fiorentina's returning goalkeeper Neto - playing his first game since December 21 after a contract dispute - was then called on to gather
Erik Lamela's long-range drive before a trio of attacks from the hosts were cut short by an offside flag.

How Monsieur Wenger Suffered Defeat In Hands Of Former Employers

Arsenal's Champions League hopes were dealt a huge blow as Monaco secured a deserved victory at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners were frustrated for much of the first half and fell behind shortly before the break as Geoffrey Kondogbia's long-range effort deflected off Per Mertesacker and past David Ospina.

Olivier Giroud missed two big chances to equalise shortly after half time, and the hosts were made to pay for wasting their opportunities as Dimitar Berbatov ended a Monaco counterattack with a controlled
finish.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain came off the bench to pull a goal back late on with a curled finish before Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco broke free of
the home defence to score with an angled drive.

Monaco conceded just once as they topped Group C, but were under pressure early on as Danny Welbeck was among those to threaten
Danijel Subasic's goal with an effort that was narrowly off target.

CELTIC KNOCKED OUT OF EUROPA LEAGUE

Fredy Guarin's superb late goal was enough to see Inter through to the last 16 of the Europa League with a 4-3 aggregate success over 10-man Celtic.

The two sides played out an enthralling 3-3 draw in the first leg at Parkhead last week and, although Thursday's fixture at San Siro lacked that goalmouth action, the two sides still produced an entertaining affair.

Celtic saw defender Virgil van Dijk dismissed for receiving two cautions in the first half - the first of which seemed somewhat harsh. From that point on, Inter were well on top and only some last-ditch defending and a fine goalkeeping display from Craig Gordon kept the scores level until Guarin produced something special in the 88th minute.

The Colombian picked up a pass from Davide Santon and arrowed a shot into the top corner from just outside the area.

The win extends Inter's unbeaten home run in the competition to 11 matches, stretching back to August 2012, while Celtic's focus will now return to clinching a domestic treble.
