Not Yet Uhuru! EFCC Files 42-count Against Former APC Governor

No comments :

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday filed fresh charges of corruption against a former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Mr. Sylva is being charged alongside three others – Francis Okokuro, Gbenga Balogun, and Samuel Ogbuku – for allegedly using three companies, Marlin Maritime Limited, Eat Catering Services Limited, and Haloween-Blue Construction and Logistics Limited to move about N19.2 billion from Bayelsa State coffers between 2009 and 2012, under false of using the withdrawn money to augment salaries of the state government workers.

The EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, said the agency awaits the assignment of the case by the court in order to pave way for the arraignment of Mr. Sylva and the other accused.

The commission's 42-count charge of stealing against the ex-governor was dismissed by the court on Wednesday.

The court had accused the EFCC of abusing court process.

The court's decision came more than a week after the anti-graft agency withdrew part of the charges – a N2 billion fraud case – against the former governor.

The EFCC said it withdrew a six-count charge of fraud against Mr. Sylva as a prelude to the consolidation of all the charges against him.

The commission had two cases against the former governor pending before two Federal High Courts in Abuja, and needed to consolidate them, the EFCC had said.

Case Closed!... As APC Concedes Defeat To @BukolaSaraki

No comments :

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, on Friday said the party had accepted Senator Bukola Saraki as the President of the Senate.

He said the reality was that Saraki's colleagues had duly elected him and the party was ready to live with the reality.

Odigie-Oyegun spoke with State House correspondents shortly after joining members of the transition committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to present their report to the President at the Defence House, Abuja.

Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, both of the APC, emerged as leaders of the National Assembly on Tuesday against the directives of the party which had earlier asked its members to vote for Senator Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila.

Since their emergence, the party had insisted that Saraki, Dogara and their supporters would be sanctioned.

When asked specifically whether the party would accept Saraki as the President of the Senate, Odigie-Oyegun said, "Of course! He has been duly elected by his colleagues. We have a reality and we must live with it."

On Saraki's aborted visit to the APC secretariat on Thursday, the party chairman said there were a lot of consultations going on at that time and he could not have been in two places at the same time.

He however said party chiefs were already talking with Saraki and would not want to make noise about it.

"Nothing went wrong (on Saraki's aborted visit), there were a lot of consultations and you can't be in two places at the same time.

"So,  it was not comfortable for us, but we have been talking. We don't want to make a song and dance of it, everything is being put in proper perspective," he said.

On the crisis that erupted in the party after the elections in the National Assembly, Odigie-Oyegun said the APC had faced greater challenges before and the latest one too would pass away.

"It is not the first or second time we have passed through this kind of scenario and we came out strong. This may not even be the last time, we come out every time stronger and more determined," he said.

The party chairman said what happened was within the APC family and they were sorting it out within the family.

He added that aggrieved persons who threatened to go to court were doing so within their rights.

"People say they are going to court which is their right, but as a party, we are looking at everything and we are coming out strong," he

Breaking! Nigeria Police Banned From Wearing Camouflage Uniform

No comments :

If the news reaching BlackBox Nigeria is anything to go by, the Nigeria Police and Nigeria Customs counterpart have been banned from wearing camouflage uniforms except during joint operation with the military or on special operation such as specific anti-riot missions, a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade, said Friday.

Mr. Olukolade, a Major General, said the te new rule followed the directive of the National Security Council approving the recommendations of a committee on measures to streamline the use of camouflage uniforms.

This, he said, was in view of the security implications and concerns raised on the clamour, duplicity and proliferation of camouflage uniforms in the country.

"The use of camouflage/fatigue is therefore restricted to the military and for occasional use by the police henceforth," the statement said.

Mr. Olukolade added, "The directive also stipulates that the military is to adopt only two types of camouflage for the three arms of the Armed Forces.

"All para-military agencies using various camouflage/fatigues uniforms have up to January 2016 to withdraw such materials currently in their inventory.

"With this development, the Ministry of Justice along with law enforcement agencies have been tasked to ensure that extant laws guiding the use of uniforms in Nigeria are strictly enforced.

"In the same vein, the Office of the National Security Adviser has been vested with the authority to vet and clear any production and supply of camouflage uniforms in Nigeria.

"The proliferation and imitation by criminals and impostors using uniforms especially the camouflage have been generating some concern in national security circles.

"The development has been communicated to all the agencies by the Office of the National Security Adviser."

Saraki's Election: Don't Mislead The Master - Dele Momodu

No comments :

The Publisher of Ovation magazine, Mr. Dele M" aomodu, on Thursday, said although he is an ardent supporter of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, he does not support Tinubu's rejection of Bukola Saraki's election as Senate President.

Momodu described Saraki's election as fair. Specifically, he said on his official Twitter page, "I'm Tinubu's boy more than most but won't join them in misleading our master."

Tinubu has refused to recognise Senator Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representative, respectively.

While referring to himself as "an independent-minded Tinubu boy," Momodu said he is an ardent supporter of fair play and that he represents no interest.

According to him, Saraki deserves the position because he also "depleted the PDP for the sake of the APC."

He said he wondered what the other APC senators were doing at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, when they were supposed to be at work.

The publisher berated those criticising Saraki's election, saying they were pretending as if the PDP was not an integral part of the coalition that led to the emergence of the APC. He commended Saraki for working across party lines.

The tweets read, "Saraki didn't sell out, he only got more votes while others were busy cooking their chicanery elsewhere. I am far closer to Tinubu and the NADECO group but fair is fair.

"Nigeria belongs to all. I supported former President Goodluck Jonathan when he was being intimidated and I wasn't a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.

"I salute Senator David Mark and Senator Ike Ekweremadu. They could have reneged on supporting Saraki but saw what APC refused to see. Truth must be established. In every game of wits, a party will always be outwitted. I am uniting them by letting them see what went wrong in their game of wits."

Awon Onigbese: List Of Bank Debtors To Be Published August 1, 2015

No comments :

... non-performing loans hit N490bn

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Deposit Money Banks have agreed to commence immediate publication of the details of debtors who fail to meet their loans obligations in the newspapers.
At the end of the 322nd  Bankers' Committee Meeting in Abuja, yesterday, it was resolved that all serial bank debtors must be published latest, August 1, 2015.

Speaking after the meeting yesterday, CBN Director of Banking Supervision, Mrs. Tokunbo Martins, said there is currently about N13 trillion credit in the market out of which about N490 billion, equivalent to 3 per cent, are nonperforming.

"The total credit is about N13 trillion.  About 3 per cent of that is not performing and August 1, 2015 is the deadline  for publishing the list of debtors," the director said.

Mrs. Martins noted that the upper limit of nonperforming loans as a percentage of total credit was 5 per cent and as such, the 3 per cent figure was an indication that the banking system was stable and within the approved limit.

Unity Bank has already given notice to its debtors on its intention to publish the list of bad debtors from next Monday, June 15, 2015.

Speaking at the meeting, Group Managing Director of Unity Bank, Mr. Henry Semenitari, said his bank resolved to start publishing as a measure to compel the customers to pay back the loans and the timing is within the approval limit.

The Managing Director of Ecobank Nigeria, Mr. Jibril J. Aku, said the foreign exchange market has now been stable with the CBN and the banks able to meet every legitimate demand.

According to him, the banks are not in any way engaged in speculations because there is no window for them to do so with the recent policy by the CBN.

"Every demand had to be properly analysed to ensure that the foreign loan to be obtained was for purposes that were in line with laid down regulations."

In his contribution, Mr. Philips Oduoza of UBA disclosed that the June 30 deadline for the Bank Verification Number was sacrosanct and that customers who failed to obtain their numbers would be denied banking services such as Foreign Exchange, Credit and internet banking, among others.

According to him, 12.5 million customers have been captured in the on-going exercise and many more are expected to obtain their numbers before the deadline.

He said that the exercise was important to provide banks with accurate data on their customers, adding that those with multiple bank accounts need to undertake the verification in one bank and then provide the others with the number which would be captured by the other banks.

His words, "If you have enrolled in a bank, you don't need another enrolment in other banks where you have accounts.  You just supply the number to the other banks.  If you don't enrol, it is possible you won't have credit, your internet services will be shut down and you won't have access to foreign exchange."

One Africa! Africa Countries To Use One Currency Says Africa Union

No comments :

The Africa Union is mooting the idea to adopt a single currency as part of the Agenda 2063 roadmap worked out by the organization, Anthony Mothae Maruping, AU Commissioner for Economic Affairs, said on Thursday.

The aim is to connect Africa through world class infrastructure, with a concerted push to finance and implement major projects, Maruping said on the sidelines of the 25th AU Summit taking place in Johannesburg.

African central bank governors have already met and deliberated on the establishment of a African monetary fund, but this will be the end result of the Agenda 2063, Maruping said.

Leaders of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi have already signed a protocol in the Ugandan capital of Kampala for the adoption of a common currency in 10 years, said Maruping.

Although many economists and experts concur that the ambitious programme of a African single currency was achievable, the lack of clarity surrounding the issue remains a problem.

The Payment Systems Steering Committee of the Southern African Development Community has also proposed a system to facilitate cross-border payment and settlement. This system would allow the settlement of payment transactions in a central location on the basis of a single currency.

This model system will initially be tested on the current common Monetary Area countries that use the South African rand.

"We now have the framework required to unlock the promise of integration, and things are happening on the ground," Maruping told Xinhua.

As part of the Agenda 2063, Maruping said, AU also moots the idea of launching a Common Africa Passport to boost the integration of all Africans.

With the introduction of a common passport in Africa, "We'll create a common identity for all African," Maruping said, adding that the common passport would also make it easier for Africans to travel across the continent without restrictions.

According to Maruping, the AU has also set the goal of making peace a reality for all the African peoples and ending all wars by 2017.
