I have learnt many things in life and one of them is that you cannot run for your life in high heel shoes.
As I was running down the slope of Falomo Bridge, at some time past 4 am, I was actually praying for the heels of my Dorothy Perkins shoes to break because I did not dare to stop to take them off. I was no longer aware of Mama running behind me. I couldn't hear her footsteps but I wasn't stopping to check on her; it was well and truly an every-chick-for-herself kind of situation. And besides, we have always told her to lose weight. Maybe now, if we make it out of this alive, she would finally learn the folly of embracing her orobo title.
At the bottom of the bridge, on the Ikoyi side, I ran into the remnants of a police check point. The officers were drinking what I can only assume to be paraga, and counting the days take. If I was shocked to happen on them at four in the morning, they were equally startled to see a yellow girl in a cream low-cut chiffon dress running at them. They scattered away from my path and would have let me continue if at that point Mama had not called out to me and finally break my get-away.
The policemen regained their composure and immediately proceeded to arrest us, pointing their guns and shouting at us to tell them who we were.
I was out of breath, Mama even more so. The officers waited while their paraga woman opined that we must be ashewos and they agreed, without relenting their hold on their weapons.
As I was contemplating whether it was wise to tell them from what we had fled, Mama, ever the loud mouth, filled them in with every 'oh' and 'ah' of her thick Yoruba accent.
"Ritual killer!" she shouted. "He is there on the bridge. He stopped to piss, that is how we escaped. He didn't know I speak Yoruba. He was telling his friend on the phone that he has found two girls for the ritual!"
Indeed, she was right. The boy had picked us up at the gate of Shoprite and taken us to his hotel room at the Four Points. He spoke funeh and ordered room service for us. Mama had asked for big Stout and assorted meat pepper soup, which the kitchen didn't have, and I had accepted his offer to share a bottle of wine with him.
He had been gentle and nice, and he came across as every bit the mugun. Mama had been first to start touching him up but he had shyly reclined from her fat arms and in due course started talking to me instead.
He wanted to know what I did for a living. Somebody who had picked me off the road at past midnight wanted to know what I did for a living. I told him I was a student, which was not a lie, and he wanted to know why I had decided to study mass-com, which I wasn't studying. He talked at length about his life in London and how he was only in Nigeria for a UN contract.

I chopped, Mama chopped. She even sent me a BB message when he was asking how many we were in my family. In her message she asked me to let the boy do without condom while she pretended to be asleep. She said that that would make the mugun fall in love. Mama's over zealousness has rendered her advices and opinions irrelevant, so I wasn't even upset at her stupidity.
No long thing, Mama soon covered her bulky body with the duvet and pretended to be asleep and the London boy finally approached me. He asked that I follow him into the bathroom and I, playing the part, asked him why.
We f~cked right there on the bed – with a c•ndom – and Mama did not once move even when I pinched her b•tt•m.

I let him hold me as he fell asleep and I must have fallen asleep as well because his phone woke us up.
He took the call in the bathroom and Mama pretended to wake up. When he returned he looked upset. He explained that he had to fly to Abuja on the first flight out of Lagos and asked where we lived and if he could drop us off.
I sensed Mama about to ask him for money so I quickly told him he could get us a cab to Ikoyi. He refused to let us take a cab at that time of the morning; he was going to drop us so he could know where I stayed - so he could come see me when he returned later in the night. He then asked if I could come with him to Abuja. It was a business meeting, he said, it would take all of two hours then we would catch the last flight to Lagos. Flights cost around thirty k. If he was willing to pay that much just for me to follow him to Abuja and back, how much would I end up fleecing out of him?
It was on the way to Ikoyi that he called up his friend and started talking in near whispers in Yoruba. Both Mama and I speak fluent Yoruba; we grew up in Lagos, after all. When he pulled over on the deserted bridge and told us he had to pee, no one begged us to jump out of his car and run. I have never run so fast in my life.
The policemen listened to our story as told by Mama and asked us if we wanted to come to the station to make a statement.

"He is on the bridge!" Mama shouted at them. "You can still catch him!" I was thinking the same.
One of the officers explained their position: "See ehn, just go and do thanksgiving that he did not succeed. By now he would have run away. How do we know where to catch him?"
Mama pointed out that we could take them to his hotel room but the same officer explained that "hotel people don't like that kind of trouble. They won't even let us see the man. Just go home and you too, stop doing ashara."
We stayed with the policemen, partly out of having been placed under arrest and partly out of not wanting to be alone, and we listened to them tell stories of girls who had barely escaped ritual killers, just like we had. When they were ready to leave we realised we were also free to go. We begged them to drop us home and, surprisingly, they obliged.
When we got to the boys' quarters on Peeple Road that we share with four other girls, there was no light. Clara, whose real name is Nkem, opened the door for us because they had locked the padlocks from inside.
"From where you ashewos dey come from this night?" she asked and thus unleashed Mama's impatience to narrate our ordeal all over again.
Clara woke Toyin, Toyin woke Beatrice, Beatrice woke Antina who woke two other girls I didn't know and who had taken my spot and Mama's spot on the mattress.
Clara lit a kerosene lamp and the girls listened in silence as Mama embellished the story with magic rings and hidden charms. At the end of her tale the girls exchanged looks then burst out into laughter.
I was trying to see the humour when one of the strangers explained it to me.
It wasn't a new thing; in fact, many sharp girls had fallen for the same trick. The boy wasn't a ritual anything; he simply didn't want to pay us and he tricked us into running away.
The girl, whose name turned out to be Kenny, assured us that if we went back to the hotel we would be told that the occupant had checked out, probably on his way to Abuja as he claimed.
To say I was pained is an understatement. But Mama preferred her own interpretation and hung on to the ritual story, no doubt, to be repeated to many a girl in the days to come. I only wished that she would leave my name out of it.
I was still smarting from being played so deftly when Kenny asked if we had checked our bags. Mama asked why, but I had clocked. I opened my bag up to the glow of the lantern and searched frantically. I emptied the contents of the bag onto the floor and searched the inner pockets. My money was gone.
That morning, as I lay on the crowded mattress, seething with anger and loathing the alarm that would soon go off to wake me up to get ready and go to school, I prayed to God to let me see that boy again. I didn't tell God what I planned to do with him when I saw him. Yoruba people would say 'moti fi OBO jona'
My name is Amaka, by the way. But people call me Juliet...‎

Ghen Ghen! Buhari Bars AIT From Covering His Activities...is this a re-enactment of decree 4?

President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari may have just started a revenge mission on the African Independent Television, AIT as earlier today (Monday,April 27), the security men attached to him barred the station's correspondent, Bebei from covering Buhari's functions.
In a report by Vanguard, it was gathered that directive was discreetly given to the correspondent by an official at the Defence House where the crew had gone to cover the visit of Cuban ambassador to Buhari.
As expected, this has already sparked controversy on social media with many asking if Buhari was returning the country to dark of military dictatorship where ‎his infamous Decree 4 gagged the press against reporting stories not favourable to the government.

See Why Niger Emir Named Tinubu 'Jagaban Borgu'

That the Emir of Borgu in Niger State, Hrh Alh. (Senator) Haliru Dantoro Kitoro III [Mai Borgu] and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Senator (Asiwaju) Bola Tinubu are close isn't in doubt. In 2006, on 26th February precisely, the first-class emir turbanned Tinubu and his wife Senator Remi Tinubu with the titles of Jagaba of Borgu and Yun Bana Jagaba of Borgu respectively. In this excerpted speech by the emir at the turbanning ceremony, he talks about his 24-year friendship with the Jagaba Borgu, and why he bestowed on him this prestigious title….
It was in the days of the ill-fated 3rd Republic, in the fateful year of 1992 that my path first crossed that of His Excellency Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We were both elected into the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he as an SDP Senator and I on the platform of the NRC. In the early days of the National Assembly of that still-born Republic, out of the dynamic social turbulence and constantly shifting political quicksand certain strong bonds of understanding, collaboration and partnership were forged between various leaders across the political divide.
In particular I and Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, though from opposing sides of the political divide, gradually discovered that our positions on issues of burning national importance increasingly propelled both of us and few other like-minded patriots in the same political direction. Naturally therefore, at the inter-personal level, we both easily gravitated towards each other. Little were we to know that difficult and dangerous times lay ahead for the entire nation.
In November 1993 all democratic institutions across the country including the National Assembly were dissolved by the Gen. Sani Abacha regime and the country was returned to Military rule. It is on record that the first challenge to this unconstitutional take over was mounted via a Press Conference which followed a closed-door meeting of about 35 Senators including myself, Senator Chuba Okadigbo, Senator Abu Ibrahim and of course Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
There is hardly any point describing the security situation as at then, but suffice it to say that we were all hounded with incessant threats, arrests and incarcerations. Eventually the struggle assumed darker dimensions and various pro-democracy proponents had to go underground. It was in the course of these struggles that I came face to face with the inner core of the essential character of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I discovered that he is one personality that can neither be bought nor distracted. He has absolutely no sense of materialism and has been known to risk his life and the lives of his dear ones in defense of the truth. He personifies the superior logic of having elected instead of selected leaders. Needless to say, he is a die-hard workaholic."

How Nigerian Woman Allegedly Killed Husband In America Because He Slept With Her Sister, Nanny's Daughter...

Temitope Adebamiro, 35, a Nigerian, has been charged with killing her husband, Adeyinka Adebamiro, 37, over infidelity claims. The culprit told New Castle County police that her husband cheated severally on her, including with her sister and their nanny's daughter. She, however, did not own to the crime, initially claiming her husband stabbed himself. Following a distress call from the couple's 1300 block of Healy Court home early Thursday, the police said they found Adeyinka in a pool of blood and a knife pierced into his neck.
Adeyinka died some hours after then.
Temitope told investigators her husband had been cheating on her with various women and had ordered her back to Nigeria multiple times to enable him time to frolic.
Temitope, with whom Adeyinka had two children, explained they had been married for more than 10 years, during which time she told investigators that he'd physically abused her, even while pregnant with their children.
She said her husband sent her to Nigeria for several months, and upon her return in December, she had to stay in a hotel near the Philadelphia airport for four days because her husband refused to let her into their Red Lion home. He, later, paid for her to fly back to Nigeria for a few more months, and about this time, she learned that her husband had spent Christmas with the nanny's daughter.

The husband later flew out to Nigeria and flew back with her to Philadelphia. As he showed her the cameras inside their home over his cellphone, Temitope saw the nanny's daughter inside the home.
At one point, Temitope saw several texts and images in her husband's phone, which she took pictures of using her cellphone. Some of the pictures included images of her sister and the nanny's daughter.
Temitope said an argument ensued between them after he discovered the photos she'd taken on her cellphone and he began erasing them.
As he yelled at her, Temitope told police there was a power outage at which time she went to the kitchen until power returned. Investigators checked with Delmarva Power, which indicated no such power outage occurred at that time, police said.
Temitope then told police that when the power returned, she found her husband in the first-floor bedroom lying in the bed. As she got closer to him, she saw a knife on the ground which she picked up and took to the kitchen. As she put it away, she noticed blood on the tip and that's when she realized that he was stabbed
Temitope has been charged with first-degree murder and other charges, arraigned and committed to the Baylor Women's Correctional Institution where she is being held without bail.

Breaking! Ondo Deputy Gov Impeached

The Ondo State deputy governor, Alhaji Alli Olanusi, was this morning impeached by members of the state House of Assembly.‎
Mr Olatunji Stanley Adeniyan, Chairman of the seven man panel constituted by the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Olasehinde Kumuyi found Olanusi guilty on most of the allegations of misconduct levelled against him.
Following the directive of the Ondo State House of Assembly, the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Olasehinde Kumuyi had last week set up a panel to look into the allegations of gross misconduct levelled against the deputy governor, Alhaji Alli Olanusi.
The seven-man panel, with Mr Olatunji Stanley Adeniyan as Chairman, was inaugurated in Akure, the state capital on Thursday and completed the assignment on Friday.
The Chief Judge, Justice Kumuyi, had in a letter dated 23rd of April 2015 said: " in line with the provision of section 188(5) of the Constitution of Federal Republic Of Nigeria 1999 as amended, I have set up a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations against the Deputy Governor as required by the Constitution."
Other members of the panel include Mr Aladesanmi Akingbade, Barr. Ademola Ekundayo, Ven. Richard Obafemi, Mr Abraham Kola Mathew, Alhaji Ibrahim Shodeinde and Mrs Eunice Yinka Obadele.

The House had on Wednesday, directed the State Chief Judge, to set up a seven-man panel to look into the allegations of gross misconduct levelled against the deputy governor following the impeachment notice served on him earlier in the week.
The lawmakers hinged their decision to impeach the deputy governor over allegations of gross misconduct, financial misappropriation, absenteeism from official duties and allegedly causing political disaffection in the cabinet of the state government .
The impeachment was notice signed by 20 of the 25 lawmakers and was announced by the Speaker, Jumoke Akindele after the Clerk of the House read seven allegations against the deputy governor.

Stop Selling Awards -Oshiomhole Urges Nigerian Universities

No comments :
Add BBN on 2BAFB965
The Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has condemned the sale of honorary awards by some Nigerian universities to individuals of “questionable character.”
Oshiomhole noted that such acts had dented the sanctity of the nation’s education system, calling for a review of such awards as a way of santising the system for future generations.
The governor spoke during the 19th convocation of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, where three Nigerians – the Esogban of Benin Kingdom, Chief David Edebiri; a philanthropist and businessman, Dr. Lee Ikpea; and Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of the Believers Love World, a.k.a Christ Embassy, were honoured by the institution.
He said, “One of the problems that confront us today as a nation is that even the ivory tower seems to have given up and many are now in a hurry to award honourary degrees even to people of clearly questionable character. That a man is rich doesn’t mean he is successful; what defines a successful man is the overall totality of his lifestyle.
“And so when we see universities giving honours to those who can dole out, it becomes award for the highest bidder and, of course, it disturbs the values of our younger ones. So, when universities give honour to people just because they are rich and even when the source of the wealth is so clear that it is not a result of industry and hard work, then I think it is very sad for Nigeria.”

Oshiomhole, who is the Visitor to the university, emphasised the need for a new national policy on education to provide equal opportunity based on intellectual capacity rather than socio-economic class.
He said, “We must revisit the question of appropriate national education policy so that it must be possible for the child of the poor to have quality education; no child should be denied access to the best schools.
“Even Oxford has had to reverse its policies notorious for providing spaces for only the children of the elite; they now have quota to ensure that a worker with requisite knowledge can go to Oxford University and the state provides subsidy to make that possible.”

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Cordelia Agbebaku, lauded the state government’s support in ensuring that good learning environment was provided for the students.
She also noted that the institution would continue to provide policies that are aimed at improving its academic profile.
A total of 7, 882 first degrees, 239 higher degrees and 46 certificates were awarded at the ceremony.

Stop Eating 'PONMO' -Akwa Ibom Govt Urges People To Stop Consuming Cow Skin

The Akwa Ibom State government has warned its citizens against consuming cow skins.‎
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Godwin Afangideh, said at a press conference on Sunday in Uyo, the state capital, that the cow skin, often referred to as Ikpa Ebola or Ponmo had being the common cause of cancer and liver problems in the state.
The commissioner, who was represented at the briefing by the Director of Veterinary Services in the state, Dr. Obot Obot, said that the people who patronised cow skin were both exposed to cancer and liver problems as well as diarrhoea and hypertension, due to the high quantity of salt used for its preservation.
He stated that the government had embarked on sensitisation programme to create awareness on the danger of consuming cow skin meat.
He said, “The state government, through the veterinary services directorate of the ministry, has embarked on a sensitisation campaign in some markets in the local government areas to talk to the people about the danger of consuming such meat.
“The veterinary officer, who was in charge of the sensitisation campaign, went to different markets and talked to the people on the imperatives of how to watch out for toxic meat following reports of its importation into the country.
“Cow skin meat, which is five times thicker than ordinary skin meat, is injected with a toxic substance called formalin used for its preservation. This formalin in the long run is capable of causing cancer and liver problems due to high concentration of salt used for their preservation.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the just-concluded governorship election in Taraba, Sen. Aisha Alhassan, has rejected the results of the poll as announced by INEC on Sunday.
Addresing a press conference in Jalingo shortly after the announcement of the results, Alhassan described the entire elections process as a "daylight robbery'' and said the party would challenge the results in the elections petitions tribunal.
"The combined governorship elections in Taraba were characterised by violence, massive rigging, ballot snatching and abuse of the card readers in substantial parts of the state by the PDP and their allies," she said.
She contended that results ascribed to Wukari, Donga, Takum, Sardauna, Zing, Yorro, Kurmi and some parts of Ussa, Karim-Lamido, Bali, Ardo-Kola and Lau local government areas were not acceptable as they did not reflect the true results of the election in Taraba.
Alhassan said all the complaints on the irregularities and abuse of the election guidelines were promptly reported to INEC, but that no action was taken.
NAN reports that the INEC Returning Officer for Taraba Prof. Kyari Mohammed, who declared the results on Sunday in Jalingo, said Ishaku scored 369,318 votes to emerge victorious.
He said Sen. Aisha Alhassan came second with 275,984 votes, while Chief David Kente of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), polled 29, 966 votes. (NAN)

APC Says Mimiko Should Be Up For Impeachment Not Deputy

No comments :

Add BBN on 2BAFB965
The All Progressives Congress in Ondo State has said that the state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, should be the one facing impeachment by the state House of Assembly for committing impeachable offences, and not his deputy, Alhaji Ali Olanusi.

This, the party argued, was because the deputy governor had not committed any impeachable offence.

In a telephone interview with our correspondent on Sunday, the spokesperson for the party in the state, Omoba Adesanya, accused the governor of masterminding the impeachment process against his deputy for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC.

He said, "The governor is annoyed that the deputy governor left for the APC, but nobody queried him when he left the Labour Party for the PDP. He shouldn't forget so soon.

"He is annoyed and with the illegal support of the state House of Assembly, he is working hard to make sure that his deputy, who has committed no impeachable offence, is impeached.

"There is no way you can find the deputy governor guilty of any misconduct, mismanagement of funds or even criminal conduct. Rather, the governor has committed more than enough.

"Is it about the OSOPADEC issue, which is still pending before the EFCC, or the funds meant for the local governments and the ones accruing to the state, or his refusal to conduct local government elections? So, the governor has committed more than enough impeachable offences and should be facing impeachment now."

Responding to the allegations, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Eni Akinsola, said the governor would not join issues with the APC or anything that had to do with the impeachment.

He said, "Impeachment is a constitutional matter vested in the legislature, and the governor has been busy doing the job he was elected to do; delivering on the promises of democracy and working for the people. So, we are not interested in joining issues with anybody.

"If the APC says the governor has impeachable offences against him, they know what to do. In fact, some of their principal members said recently that they would impeach the governor. So, what are they talking about now? I think they should ask themselves the right questions."

Meanwhile, the state APC has said it will resist efforts by the state House of Assembly to impeach Olanusi, saying the impeachment process is illegal.

The party also alleged that Mimiko had bribed the state Chief Judge, Olasehinde Kumuyi, and members of the panel set up to investigate the allegations raised against Olanusi by the state lawmakers.

But the Chief Press Secretary to the governor had denied all these allegations.

He said that the governor was not involved in the impeachment process and did not bribe anybody to remove the deputy governor.

However, in a statement on Sunday the party said the impeachment process was on a wrong premise, and that it would not accept the recommendations of the panel.

The statement signed by Adesanya partly read, "It should be noted that the deputy governor had on Friday, April 17, 2015, written to the governor, with Ref. No. OBG/A/136/67, notified him that he would be going for a routine medical check-up outside the country.

"So far, the deputy governor who had travelled since Saturday, April 18, 2105, was not aware of any impeachment notice or proceeding against him, as he has not been duly served. Therefore, he could not be expected to reply to allegations he is not aware of.

"To further display Mimiko's desperation to unlawfully remove Olanusi from office, 48 hours after the purported service of impeachment notice on the deputy governor, who is not in the country, an investigative panel was constituted by the Chief Judge on April 23, 2105.

"The said panel, on the same day of its constitution, went ahead to paste a summons on the fence of the deputy governor's residence to appear before it the following day, April 24, 2015. Why the hurry when the constitution allows for up to three months for the panel to do its findings, at which time the deputy governor would have come back.

"The kangaroo panel also concluded their investigations on the same day. Where is fair hearing in this matter? Why is due process not being followed?"

The statement added that not even the plea by the party's lawyer, Benson Enikuomehin, could stop the panel, adding that the governor had also sacked political aides of his deputy.
