A lawyer resident in Lagos State has condemned the decision of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari to drop the title of "General" from his name.
Ebun Adegboruwa further threatened to sue Buhari for the 'illegal and immoral' act, Vanguard reports.
Mr Adegboruwa also said, via a statement, that it was too late for Buhari to drop the title having enjoyed all the benefits attached to it.
The statement reads:
"By virtue of Paragraph 1(1) of the 1st Schedule of the Armed Forces Pensions Act, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) is entitled to, and has indeed been receiving and benefiting from pension, as an officer who held a regular commission, before his retirement."
"Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) is the official and legal status, title, designation and appellation of our President-elect. He has no choice in the matter, but to continue to carry this cross for life. The military world over is a dignified institution, built on discipline, selflessness, courage, dignity, loyalty and patriotism."
"It is an institution that everyone should be proud of, except those of them who were trained and equipped by this noble institution, but chose to capture civilian power, through coup d'etat. Buhari attends the Council of State meetings as former Head of State, which office he held in his capacity as a Major-General, which officially qualifies him to earn some benefits, have security aides, salaries, emoluments, diplomatic passports as well as free medical treatment, home and abroad."
"From all the foregoing, I therefore humbly appeal to the President-elect to continue to bear his official name and status, by which he once climbed to power. I do sincerely sympathise with him on the very sad and distasteful memories that this title attracts to him. But it is his cross to carry."
Buhari said, in a communique released on Sunday, May 17, 2015, that he no longer wished to be addressed as "General."
The President-elect will be sworn in on May 29.

A Brazilian blogger, Evany Jose Metzker, who was on investigative mission over child prostitution as well as corrupt politicians was tortured and scalped before his killers chopped off his head, police have claimed.‎
The body of the 67-year old blogger was found in the southeastern Minas Gerais state. There was evidence that he had been severely tortured before he was eventually decapitated. As well as child prostitution and political corruption, Metzker investigated drug dealing.
The Brazilian journalist's union condemned the killing and urged authorities to find who was responsible for the brutal murder. A spokesman said:
'The union is demanding a rigorous investigation. Independent journalist Evany Jose Metzker was warned he ran a risk investigating drug trafficking and child prostitution in this violent region.'
Before his murder, Metzker had been working on a series of stories for the past three months in the Jequitinhonha Valley, which is acknowledged as one of Brazil's poorest regions.
The reporter had been missing for five days before his bound and badly marked and decomposing body was found Monday.
Metzker's family said police had received an anonymous tip where they could find his remains, near the town of Padre Paraíso.
A police spokesman confirmed:
'His hands were tied behind his back and his body showed signs of torture.'
An un named police source claimed the murder may have been a crime of passion, however the officer said he could not be quoted by name.

Lagos State Speakership And The Burden Of Merit

 ‎
As the day of reckoning beckons for the current administration with the inauguration in less than a week for the executives and legislatures, keen observers of politics in Nigeria are waiting patiently to see the power plays of electing Senate President, Speaker of House of Representatives and State Assemblies respectively. One state that will most definitely come into analytical reckoning of political analysts is Lagos State. The Centre of Excellence, being one of the most populated city in Nigeria and the economic nerve centre, often comes under scrutiny not only during the election of the No. 1 citizen - Governor, but also there are concerns as regards who leads the 40 elected honourables at the State's house of assembly.
Reasons for concern cannot be far-fetched; the Speaker of the hallow chamber in the metropolitan city is simply the 3rd most powerful elected official. Again, considering that the functionality of the Executive arm in Lagos State is contingent upon the legerity and flexibility of the Legislative arm, it is important that so many socio-political and economic considerations are attached to the position of the Speaker.
However, without sounding too pompous, every Lagosian (I am proudly one too) understands the enormity of the challenges that confronts governance in the state and over the years have craved for the very best hands amongst the available(s) to run the state. So far, since 1999, the state has not fared badly both at the executive and legislative level; having successfully elected Akinwunmi Ambode as Governor-Elect, the post of Lagos State Speaker cannot be an exception in terms of getting quality hand. Since inauguration of the state house of assembly on October 2, 1979 and subsequent election of Rt. Hon Oladosun Oshinowo as first Speaker down to the incumbent speaker - Rt. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) Speakers have carved a niche for themselves in composure and brilliance in handling legislative functions in the state.
For Lagos State Chapter of All Progressives Congress and the 8th State Assembly, there lies a huge challenge of who becomes the Speaker. With an overwhelming majority of 32 APC members and 8 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) honourables, the game might not be an unanimous decision as it used to be, particularly during the 6th and 7th assemblies because there are 7 credible candidates who have shown interest in leading the hallow chamber of excellence; Lanre Ogunyemi, Mudasiru Obasa, Rotimi Abiru, Wasiu Eshinlokun-Sanni, Funmilayo Tejuosho, Gbolahan Yisawu and S.O.B Agunbiade.
However, majority of the contenders are in the race tentatively on the assumption that the Speakership should be zoned to a particular senatorial district in the state. It is believed that of 3 senatorial districts, the governor-elect, Akinwunmi Ambode, hails from Lagos East while his deputy, Mrs Idiat Adebule, is from Lagos West senatorial district, leaving Lagos Central out of the equation. Thus, it is presumed that, for senatorial balancing, the speaker of LAHA should come from Lagos Central!
But beyond zoning and mere interest and the fact that the 7 contenders are all returning honourables, being the Speaker of LAHA demands much more. Leading the 8th Assembly requires the ability to unravel potentials. Though it has been argued that brilliance and ability to coordinate and carry other members along in the day-to-day running of the House would play a pivotal role, eloquence and charisma alone might not do the complete job.
While speaking to Journalists at the Defence House in Abuja, on Thursday, May 21, 2015, ex-Lagos State governor and National Leader of the All Progressives a Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, emphasized the need to put merit above zoning in electing the leaders of National Assembly. Asiwaju noted that APC will not use the principle of zoning to compromise the quality of leadership for the National Assembly considering the expectations of Nigerians.
Quoting him, Asiwaju said, "the nation is expecting us to take a decisive leadership decision and make one meritoriously. Merit will not be compromised. You have to be competent, you have to posses the kind of character required from leaders. You have to be a pan Nigerian and possess a very solid character to lead the National Assembly. That is what we are talking about. It's not zoning to compromise quality of leadership and competency of an individual." This is a laudable reaffirmation of APC's seriousness to get things done, same principle as a matter of relativity applies to Lagos State Speakership.
The next Lagos State Speaker must believe in the power of his actions to influence others. Ability to manage filibustering is essential to ensure meticulous passage of bills that progressive Lagos may demands, particularly in the light of PDP honourables, who might want to play "spoiler". In electing Lagos State speaker, it is ideal to evaluate the contending legislators with respect to their previous contributions to legislative activity in the house. Are we to evaluate based on the number of bills that they sponsored? Number of floor speeches they made? Voting pattern during peculiar bills? Such as use of hijab, anti-tobaco bill etc, or based on the ranking of the legislators?
The issue of ranking in the house is often subjective and misleading. That a particular honourable has been able to manipulate his/her to return to the chamber consecutively does not mean such person has better idea of legislative principles. The LAHA leadership should be subjected to tests of integrity, experience and pedigree with little or no consideration for regional alignment or terms spend devouring tax payers' money.
At what point does a state put its best foot forward, to differentiate politics from merit and meeting the demands of electorates? Giving the dynamics of Lagos State politics and the position it holds as a model to other states, there is the urgent need to segue from its mere megacity appendage to a functional city that meets the demands of 21st century adventurers. Such state needs not just a speaker by political expediency, but a Speaker who knows his onions. APC out of developmental exigency have to be leery of electing just anybody, it will be counterproductive to the mantra of continuity and change.
Should APC believe in credible leadership, constructive legislation and in-depth scrutiny of the executive through oversights, of the contending candidates, Hon. S.O.B Agunbiade, stands a better chance on merit. His analytical and broad view coupled with verse experience and knowledge of the law, ethics and house procedures stands him out. As the chairman, Committee on Judiciary, Human Right and Public Petitions, Hon. Agunbiade has shown his dexterity in law making and crisis management. He engages through the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), which he played a pivotal role in its formulation, to devise for citizens an amicable out of court conflict resolution for litigants without having to go through the strenuous legal tussle. This has reduced the number of cases ending the courtroom, an attribute the next Speaker must have in abundance.
In 2014, due to his unique style of marshalling his views at the floor of the house; an unbiased, trust-able and critical news body, representing the fourth estate of the realm, Lagos State House of Assembly Correspondence Association (LAHACA), presented Agunbiade with the 'Best Male performing Lawmaker at Plenary' award. In the same year, a notable online news platform, www.gazellenews.com, awarded him 'Best Male Lawmaker for the Year 2014', these are few amongst the laudable and merit-based recognition he has garnered in the cause of time.
Without excluding brilliant motions and bill he has facilitated and the impeccable community engagement with far reaching impacts on the people of his immediate constituency, Hon. S.O.B Agunbiade has the temerity of a 21st century leader, who can effortlessly drive fellowship, inclusiveness and team-spirit that would be crucial to the stability of the incoming executive.

Without mincing words, it would be logical for APC as a party ready to set precedence to do a little homework and feel good about making an educated choice for the people of Lagos State, because in the new economy of Change, information, education, and motivation are everything. Honourable S. O. B Agunbiade can be trusted to deliver the LAHA we want in 'megacity Lagos', as a people and political party.

THE academic environment of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo town, Ondo State, has again been thrown into mourning as a final year student of the college, Timilehin Akinsiku, slumped and died while on excursion to a tourist centre in Osun State.
Three workers of the institution, including a couple, Pastor Folorunso Akinseye, Mrs Beatrice Akinseye and another Pastor Festus Akinsoyinu Fadakinte and seven others had died in an auto crash at Kajola village, near Ore, two weeks ago.
The final year student was said to have died while on excursion to Erin-Ijesa waterfall in Osun State with other students and executive members of the Student Union Government, SUG, of the institution.
It was learnt that the excursion to the tourist centre was the climax of the annual students' union week in the institution.
Late Timilehin was in the English Language Department in the college.‎
All the students that reportedly embarked on the excursion were hale and hearty and in joyful mood as they climbed the hill.
It was gathered that those who were tired while ascending the hill, waited to refresh by taking water and snacks they brought along for the excursion.
However, the unexpected reportedly happened while the students were descending the hill as the deceased reportedly kept complaining of tiredness to his colleagues.
Some of them helped him by holding his hands and fanning him. He was said to have finally slumped and other student rallied round him to apply first aid treatment but could not revive him.
He was reportedly carried down from the hill and rushed to a hospital in Ilesha from the tourist centre, where further efforts to revive him proved abortive.
Timilehin was later confirmed dead by the medical personnel, who attended to him in the hospital he was rushed to by his colleagues and workers at the tourist centre.
SUG dispels rumour
Meanwhile, the SUG President, Isiaka Kamorudeen, has dispelled rumours that the late Timilehin was murdered during the excursion.
His denial was to put to rest insinuations in the college that the late final year student was murdered. Kamorudeen, who described the sudden death of Timilehin as unfortunate, said he slumped.
The President added that all those that took part in the excursion showed no sign of sickness, but added that they were in joyful mood all through the visit until the unfortunate incident occurred.
The state Police Command said the authorities of the institution were yet to report the matter to the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in Ondo town.

The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee has expelled a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Kunle Kalejaye, from further practising as a lawyer.
The LPDC disbarred ‎Kalejaye after finding him guilty of professional misconduct by a five-man panel of the LPDC, led by the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa.
‎The LPDC found Kalejaye guilty of misconduct while representing the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, at the Osun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, where Oyinlola's victory in the 2007 poll was being challenged, by the then candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola.
Kalejaye was said to have engaged in "confidential, private and confidential telephone conversation" with the Chairman of the Osun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, Justice Thomas Naron,‎ without the knowledge of the other party.
‎He allegedly engaged in the "unprofessional act" between March and June 2008 and Justice Naron, with whom he committed the misconduct, had since on February 20, 2013 been compulsorily retired by the National Judicial Council.
The Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Ekiti Division, Justice Paul Galinje, who read the directive (judgment of the LPDC), held that the prosecution, the Nigerian Bar Association, proved its three-count complaint against Kalejaye.
The NBA was represented by Jibrin Okutepa (SAN).
He held that Kalejaiye violated the provisions of sections 1, 15, 30, 31, 34 and 55 of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners (2007).
The panel directed the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court to delete his name from the roll (list) of legal practitioners in the country.
The committee also directed that its decision should be served on the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Chief Judges of all the states of the federation, the Chief Judge of Federal High Court, Chief Judge of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, the Inspector General of Police and all states' Commissioners of Police.
It also directed that the decision be published in the media.
Kalejaiye's lawyer, Niyi Owolade, a former Attorney General of Osun State, had objected to the LPDC's decision.
He said his client was about filing his appeal at the Supreme Court.
Under the Legal Practitioners Act, Kalejaiye has up to 28 days to appeal the decision, failing which it will become effective.

An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Ogun State has been arrested after allegedly raping a student of the Federal College of Education (FCE) in the Osiele area of the state.
ASP John Mafoya was apprehended and is being interrogated for the alleged rape of the student, who has been simply identified as Oluwaseun.
The incident allegedly occurred after Oluwaseun was arrested for participating in a mob attack against a corper who was accused of sexually assaulting a student, Punch reports.
ASP Mafoya is said to have taken over the case and ordered Oluwaseun's detention after which he drove her to his house in the Alanco area of Abeokuta and allegedly raped her.
"After raping Oluwaseun in his house, Mafoya brought her victim back to the police post at about 10.30pm, where he again raped her in his office. He then returned her to the cell. It was the girl's colleagues who raised N3,000 for her bail the following day," a source at the college told Punch.
"She, however, did not discuss her experience with anyone because she was traumatised. The only thing she did was to cleverly record the conversations she had with the police officer on her mobile phone. Such matter would have died naturally, but it was a policeman at the same police post who gave her the courage to speak up and expose the ASP," the source added.
Mafoya is also said to have a previous accusation of rape pending against him.

A 43-year-old tailor, Shakiru Fasasi, who allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl, names withheld, was on Thursday arraigned in Lagos. Fasasi, who resides at No. 24, Akindiya St., Sango-Agege in Lagos state, is standing trial on a two-count charge of unlawful sexual intercourse and destroying evidences at a Yaba Chief Magistrates' Court.
The Prosecutor, ASP Godwin Anyanwu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 19 at the accused's residence. Anyanwu said that the victim, a food vendor, was always a regular face at the accused person's compound. He said the victim had, on the fateful day, gone to sell food and "the accused asked the victim to come and collect her plate in his apartment.
"The accused, thereafter, locked the door and threatened the victim to cooperate; ordered her to remove her cloth and had sexual intercourse with her, causing her severe pain and injuries,'' he said. The prosecutor said that the accused destroyed the victim's brassiere and pant to clear any evidence against him.
According to him, Fasasi also caused damage to the victim's private part causing her to bleed profusely. He said that the offences contravened Sections 91 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Section 91(1) prescribes seven years' imprisonment for the offender. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O Soladoye, ordered that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPPs) for legal advice. Soladoye granted bail to the accused in the sum of N200, 000, with two sureties in like sum, and adjourned the case to June 15.

Dusk To Dawn! Governor Fayose Imposes Curfew In Ekiti

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has imposed a curfew on Ado Ekiti to prevent the raging fight between transport workers and Hausa traders from spreading to other parts of the state.
The governor, while addressing the Hausa Community at Atikankan area of Ado Ekiti, said the curfew, which started on Thursday, would be on between 6pm and 6am daily.
Fayose also ordered security agents to arrest whoever failed to comply with the order.
The governor, who appealed to the Hausa community to be patient, promised that they would get justice.
"You said you love me, this is the time you have to show this love. I want to plead with you to submit whatever lethal weapon you have in your possession to the police. And if you refuse to do this, whether you are Yoruba or Hausa, the police will arrest you.
"Nigeria belongs to all of us and for the sake of our country, I plead with you to allow peace to reign."
However, the state Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Mr. Akinsola Osundiya, at a briefing with journalists in Ado Ekiti, distanced members of the union from the crisis.
"Our members do not load vehicles in that area, so we were not in any way involved in the clash with the Hausa traders," he said.
The Chairman of Hausa Community in Ekiti State, Alhaji Adamu Imam, begged the government for monetary assistance for those whose property were damaged by hoodlums during the crisis.
Imam said the names of the perpetrators of the violent attack had been compiled and would be made available to the governor and security agencies for necessary actions.
However, the Ekiti State Police Command has said the number of those injured during the incident had risen to 24.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alberto Adeyemi, on behalf of the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Etop John James, said two of those injured sustained gunshot wounds and were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
"Nobody died in the incident contrary to reports; only two persons sustained pellet wounds while 22 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
"All the injured were taken to the police clinic in Ado-Ekiti where they are being treated and they are responding to treatment," he said.
The command, however, debunked media reports that four people had died during the clash between the drivers and Hausa Traders at Erekesan Market in Ado Ekiti.
It disclosed that three units of mobile policemen had been stationed on the scene of the violent attack to arrest whoever planned to foment trouble.
The Police enjoined residents to go about their lawful business as enough security arrangement had been made to forestall a re-occurrence.
Meanwhile, the umbrella body for non-indigenes resident in Ekiti State, Non-Indigenes Youth Alliance, has condemned the attack on their members, declaring the act as uncivilised and an act of bestiality.
In a statement signed by its Acting Chairman, Prince Abdulrahaman Oziandu, the group said they never expected their shops to be looted in such a brazen manner.
The body, which praised the governor for quick intervention in resolving the issue, called on relevant agencies to beef up security so that their members could return to work without fear of being molested or intimidated by hoodlums.
Oziandu, who said those who were mostly hit by the attack were Igbo, Hausa, Nupe and Ebira people, accused the assailants of re-selling the looted commodities at cheaper prices to interested members of the public.
He said, "The event of Wednesday was the second in history, when some indigenes, hiding under their popularity will attack whoever that is not their tribe over issues that could be resolved. We are giving this last warning that they should not allow this to happen again."
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ekiti chapter, has called on the CP to arrest those that launched attacks on some journalists in the state while covering the crisis.
The state NUJ Chairman, Laolu Omosilade, in a statement in Ado Ekiti condemned the attack, saying it was the highest point of barbarism in this modern time.

Awon Aye! Some Nigerians Want Yale To Withdraw Okojo-Iweala's Doctorate Award

No comments :

Some Nigerians have called on Yale University in the United States to withdraw the Honorary Degree it bestowed on the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
Okonjo-Iweala had been awarded Doctor of Humane Letters by the prestigious institution on May 15, 2015.
The institution, while presenting the award to Okonjo-Iweala, had said, "As a minister in your country, you made social and economic reforms your mission. As Nigeria's coordinating minister of economic development and minister of finance, you have tackled corruption, created a vision and path to long-term economic stability, and worked to build a culture of transparency."
However, a Nigerian, Sunday Iwalaiye, on Wednesday started an online petition on Change.Org, urging Nigerians to also sign the petition.
Checks by our correspondent showed that 22 hours after the petition was created, 2,500 people had signed it.
The petition stated that Okonjo-Iweala did not deserve the award, accusing her of being responsible for the harsh economic conditions the country is facing.
The petitioner wondered why Yale University would give an award to a minister under whose watch billions of dollars in oil money went missing.
Iwalaiye stated that corruption did not reduce under Okonjo-Iweala as claimed by the institution but reached unprecedented levels.
The petition read, "This citation from the Yale University does not reflect nor represent everything that has happened under the watch and the supervision of the Nigerian economy by Okonjo-Iweala as the nation's finance minister.
"There is no tangible evidence of any economic development in Nigeria under the leadership of Okonjo-Iweala in all reality. Nigeria's debt profile has risen rapidly under Okonjo-Iweala and Nigeria has borrowed over $2bn in the last four months alone to pay salaries of the federal and state civil servants.
"Our foreign reserves and excess crude oil accounts have both depleted heavily under Okonjo-Iweala. The recurrent expenditures in the federal budgets reached the highest levels which made capital development practically impossible in Nigeria under her.
"The true picture that Yale University missed is the fact that the economy of Nigeria has almost grounded to its final halt today which will make it a daunting task for the incoming administration of Muhammadu Buhari to meet its campaign promises."
The petitioner wondered whether Yale University was rewarding Okonjo-Iweala for the $20bn oil money that went missing under her watch.
He said Yale University would be seen to be rewarding recklessness and criminality if it does not rescind the award given to the minister.
He added, "To give an honorary doctorate degree to an undeserving Nigerian by a world renowned university is the biggest slap on the faces of the 180 million Nigerians in 2015. I am using this social medium to appeal to the board of regents of this prestigious university to withdraw this honorary degree that they awarded to this Nigerian immediately and without any further delay for the sake of posterity."

Liverpool have cancelled a meeting with Raheem Sterling and his representative, Aidy Ward, after the agent's recent comments over his client's future at Anfield.‎
The 20-year-old has so far stalled on talks over an extension and was due to meet with club officials on Friday , where he was expected to firmly state his desire to leave this summer.
But Ward's public claims that there are no circumstances under which Sterling would remain on Merseyside , even if he were offered €1 million a week, have forced the Reds to cancel their proposed meeting.
The forward's agent made strongly worded comments about his disregard for the club's interests as he seeks to give his client Champions League football next season, adamant that "every Premier League club will make a bid".
Ward also rebuked those criticising Sterling for wanting to move on, calling Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher "a k***" .

Carlo Ancelotti's side revealed on Thursday that tests had discovered the France international has suffered a "tear in his right rectus femoris muscle".
The injury means he is likely to miss the final Liga clash of the season against Getafe on Saturday, although Madrid will finish second in the table regardless of the result at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Benzema has endured a season hampered by injury problems and only made his return from an ankle problem in the Champions League semi final second leg against Juventus last week.
