Let's Discuss How to End Child Marriage on Twitter Tomorrow #IDAC2015

1 comment :

Good evening.

As we prepare to commemorate the 2015 International Day of the African Child tomorrow, which also doubles as the day for the celebration of the 25th Year Anniversary of the Adoption of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, with the view of reinforcing State Parties commitment to children's rights, examining the main achievements and challenges in the implementation of the charter, and identifying the way forward, join us for a tweet session as we discuss on how to Accelerate our Collective Efforts to End Child Marriage in Africa.

While celebrating the 25 Years Anniversary of the Charter, with its improvement on the lives of children, to one degree or another, also worthy of note is that there are still gaps that need to be filled to ensure the well-being of children in Africa. In particular, Child Marriage remains a reality for millions of children–predominantly girls–across Africa. Reports show that thirty-nine percent of girls in sub-Saharan Africa are married before their 18th birthday; thirteen percent are married by their 15th birthday. It is also obnoxious to learn that 15 out of the 20 countries with the highest rates of child marriage are in Africa.

It is in consideration of this fact and in an effort to provide a bright future for millions of girls that the ACERWC made ending child marriage topic of first concern, hence the need to educate the general public.

Join us on Twitter tomorrow, June 16 from 10am 1:00pm as we discuss the need to End Child Marriage. To join the conversation, tweet using the hashtag #IDAC2015 and
@child_fount. For further information, see the attached banner.

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Thank you.
